When Two Become One - Dundee and Angus Local CHAT THREAD

TeaAndTunnocks · 23/03/2013 11:45

The merging of the sites seems to have done funny stuff to active convos on here, so here is a new chat thread for all Mnetters in Dundee and Angus.

How are you all doing? If you don't know me yet, I am the Local Editor of the Dundee Angus site, and will be working hard to get the site filled with great places to visit, tips for classes and shopping, and lots of wine or coffee fueled meetups.

I have just been moving house this past week, which is why it has been very quiet on here, but am hoping to be back up to speed next week.

Soooooooooooooooo, how is the weather where you are? I am in Dundee and it is snowing but not lying. Can you believe it? Where is our Spring gone?

hi mrmj! waves in a slightly over enthusiastic manner. Loving Forfar living so far :)

Lentil - we were in Stobswell which was great when we were younger but just got worse over time. Tge particular street we were on had a lots of houses and flats built on it about 5 yrs ago and since then its been almost constant police visits, fights outside, mindless vandalism and thw last straw was when my partners motorbike got nicked twice in a week from outside the flat (which will totally out me cos i was raging at the time!). Don't get me wrong, there are good bits of dundee but by the end I had just had enough.

LED - I think they are a littlw cheaper - you seem to get a bit more for your money out here (but maybe I'm just swayed by the gorgeous surroundings :D). We've ended up plumping for a new build here - should be ready soon!

LentilAsAnything · 15/08/2013 20:52

mrmj, we've been to the new Olympia loads, and love it, but I can't compare it to the old one as we are new here and didn't experience it. The slides are great fun, and toddler DS loves the little play area.

Thanks, popcorn. But oh dear. The house I currently have my eye on is in Stobswell. I think we are currently also in Stobswell (not entirely sure where the borders are). Oh no oh no oh no!

I am still liking it here, have found so many things to do with DS, a good variety of classes, loads of fun places to go and explore.

popcorngazebo · 15/08/2013 21:19

Akkk sorry, I didn't mean to put you off! again, there are good and bad areas of stobswell - the street we were in (near to lidl) just wasn't that good any more. tell me which street you are thinking of and I can tell yiu my opinion of it!

have you thought about ardler? my boys cm is there and I think its nice - we debated putting an offer in on a house there.

LentilAsAnything · 15/08/2013 23:47

I will PM you!

And it's ok, I need to gather all this information to make an informed choice, so feel free to tell me anything and everything I might need to know!

Not heard of Ardler. Just looked it up. We were thinking the other end of town as we like to be close to Olympia so we can go quickly without a car, and also, I go to the gym there in the morning before DH goes to work so need to be able to dash there and back in good time.

Feel free to send me any links to houses!

LED, should I start my own house-hunting thread or can I stay here?
We are still getting ours on the market so probably not ready to move for a while, so still got time to look around and get to know areas.

LEDundeeAngus · 16/08/2013 11:21

I have just asked MNHQ if we can have a Chat thread on Local, so that it disappears after a couple of weeks - like the ones on the main board. I thought it might be preferable if we are going to share details such as where we live, and where we might move to.

If everyone is ok with this - I will have this chat thread deleted once we start a new one.

If you want to continue the discussion here, Lentils, that is fine with me. It keeps the chat thread bumped and we can discuss other stuff around it.

The other day, I was driving in the area behind what used to be the Dundee Royal Infirmary (DRI) and thought that you might like it there. It is close to town and to Olympia, and would be fab for your DH getting to work too.

LentilAsAnything · 16/08/2013 16:23

That's a great idea. Thanks. Though this is a nice chat thread so maybe we could just have the stalker-friendly posts deleted? Up to you and others,I don't mind either way.

Thanks so much for all your house-hunting efforts! I appreciate it!

LEDundeeAngus · 16/08/2013 16:36

We will leave this thread for a while, and then start a new one if MNHQ agree to the Chat thread.

I am enjoying being a little bit Kirsty :)

LentilAsAnything · 16/08/2013 17:45

Cool.

Aw, bless you! :) She has a new show coming out, looking for people to be on it.

popcorngazebo · 16/08/2013 20:18

oooh really? what's her new show about?

LentilAsAnything · 17/08/2013 20:50

Kirsty Show

LEDundeeAngus · 19/08/2013 08:28

That sounds like an interesting show. I am firmly a townie. We lived in a village for almost 4 years in Geneva, and while I liked it, it was not for me.

We like to go for walks and I like the variety of routes that being in a town gives us. I like to be able to nip into town if I need something, or go to a nearby supermarket (we have two large supermarkets within couple of minutes drive).

Being in a town also gives us a wider range of cultural activities, and activities for the kids.

One of the reasons I love living in Dundee is that it gives me all that, but still isn't a huge impersonal city. I like that I can bump into friends in the town, or in a supermarket. It is a friendly place to live.

What about you lot? Townie or Tscheuchter? Maybe I should start a chat thread for this?

LentilAsAnything · 19/08/2013 15:45

I'd like the best of both worlds. Can my front door open up to the town, and out the back door there's countryside - a mountain, a lake, a little waterfall and some forest and meadows, you know, pretty much everything! :) I do feel Dundee is a great middle ground. I am impressed with the array of clubs and classes for DS, they are a little bit of a chore without a car (went car shopping this weekend, what a chore!) and I like that we've all major shops within easy reach in town, yet are also close to a nice little beach.

mrmj · 19/08/2013 21:26

Its funny cos i consider myself a townie, because i live in Forfar. And don't think i could ever live in Dundee because it too big and Im not cut out for city life lol.

Popcorn, if you are going into a new build then i think you must be the other side of town from me :D

LentilAsAnything · 20/08/2013 00:10

I think the chore of car shopping really must have gotten to me with my double use of chore up there! Grin

LEDundeeAngus · 20/08/2013 09:21

Lentil
You need what the Germans call a 'Hackenporsche' - A Heel Porsche

I had one when I lived in Germany, it was fab when I was out without the pram and had to get some shopping.

mrmj
You can't be a townie when you live in Forfar. It doesn't work!

LentilAsAnything · 20/08/2013 20:58

I meant shopping FOR a car, not shopping without a car. Decided we do really need one here, so hunting hard!
We get most of our groceries delivered, only picking up the odd few fresh items daily or so.

Saw a horrid fight in town today, two guys, one took his belt off and started whipping the other guy with the buckle end. Vile. Their girlfriends managed to pull them apart, well, last I saw - I was with little DS so we scarpered fast.

LEDundeeAngus · 21/08/2013 11:08

Gosh, that sounds scary, Lentil. I witnessed a woman have her bag snatched when we were in Geneva, and it left me a bit shaken.

Was through in Edinburgh last night as my PILs are over with a bus tour. They are off up north for a few days, and we will see them at the weekend.

mrmj · 21/08/2013 19:11

ok i must be out of touch with the lingo, i thought townie was someone who lived in a town :D Dundonians are city dwellers to me lol

LEDundeeAngus · 21/08/2013 20:17

Ha. Yes, Townie is someone who lives in a town. It is generally said in a quite dismissive way by those who live in the country, just as Tscheuchter is said by the town-dwellers in a snobby way :)

Any of you use Twitter? We have a Twitter Chat once a week using the hashtag #mnlocal. Come and join in on Wednesdays from 8pm till 9pm (RIGHT NOW!)

LentilAsAnything · 22/08/2013 09:54

It was horrible! Hope they stayed apart after we disappeared, they both looked pretty worked up.

Edinburgh's lovely, isn't it!

Hope the Twitter Chat went well.

popcorngazebo · 24/08/2013 08:15

nah I'm afraid I'm with mrmj here - dundee is a city, not a town! we are townies :D.

I'm afraid I've been burned by Dundee, its not my friend any more. although I do go through regularly for the fabulouness that is t Ann cake! (oh yeh and work). so if that makes me a teucheter so be it

so excited for my new house to be finished - only a couple of weeks now.

LEDundeeAngus · 27/08/2013 14:25

T-Ann Cake is amazing, isn't it? We bought my parents a gift voucher and they had a fabulous lunch.

Been a bit busy over the weekend, and battling with horrendous wifi issues (ie absolutely no wifi). Sorted myself with a dongle so that I can at least do some work.

My pic was in the Courier today :)

How are you all doing?

mrmj · 27/08/2013 19:07

oooh i read the courier today, I must have seen you unknowingly :D are you on the online version?

LentilAsAnything · 27/08/2013 20:36

Ooh, get you! Scan and upload! (Or online?)

mrmj · 27/08/2013 22:20

i meant the courier's website :D just had a look, are you feeding a lil doggie? If thats not you please dont be insulted!
