When Two Become One - Dundee and Angus Local CHAT THREAD

TeaAndTunnocks · 23/03/2013 11:45

The merging of the sites seems to have done funny stuff to active convos on here, so here is a new chat thread for all Mnetters in Dundee and Angus.

How are you all doing? If you don't know me yet, I am the Local Editor of the Dundee Angus site, and will be working hard to get the site filled with great places to visit, tips for classes and shopping, and lots of wine or coffee fueled meetups.

I have just been moving house this past week, which is why it has been very quiet on here, but am hoping to be back up to speed next week.

Soooooooooooooooo, how is the weather where you are? I am in Dundee and it is snowing but not lying. Can you believe it? Where is our Spring gone?

OP posts:
LentilAsAnything · 30/07/2013 17:26

A public thank you to the lovely kind LED for taking me under her wing today and showing me around Dundee. Had a great time, and I am liking Dundee more and more.
Onwards with the househunting.

muckypuppy · 30/07/2013 18:09

led - Just googled Megginch Castle as I'd never heard of it before. Must have driven past that entrance hundreds of times without ever wondering what was behind it. Makes you wonder what other gems you pass on a daily basis without realising!

Also looked up Victoria Drummond, she soundslike an amazing, strong, determined woman - a great role model for your daughter.

lentil If you're looking for activities for your DS have a look at Dundee Sports Development, they do activites like little gym time www.dundeesportsdevelopment.com/sport-activities/earlyyears/term-time-list. Also try Olympia for the parent and toddler swimming classes www.leisureandculturedundee.com/olympia/lessons I used to teach them at the old centre years ago and they were great fun and a really good way of developing water confidence and basic skills.

Good luck with the househunting.

LentilAsAnything · 30/07/2013 18:45

Thanks, mucky! I actually just picked up a leaflet for the gym and football yesterday. Am impressed with the stuff on offer. Just got to work out where everything is, what I can fit in, getting there etc. Off to a wedding down south this weekend, so will really knuckle down and get organised when we get back. Am sure I will be back here for more advice!

LEDundeeAngus · 30/07/2013 20:55

Lentil
It was fun.

It was a Mumsnet Location Location Location. We were only missing Phil and I really should have been wearing a big floppy hat, a la Kirsty.

:)

I am in the middle of the biography of Victoria Drummond. Haven't had time to read for ages, must dig it out again.

LentilAsAnything · 30/07/2013 21:05

Were you wearing fancy big heels though? I don't think I noticed. Probably not with all the walking done.
Thanks again! :)

LEDundeeAngus · 01/08/2013 08:24

It was fun.

So what are you all up to today? Looks like a day of rain, and I don't know what to do with the kids. Will work a bit this morning then maybe head to indoor play area. We won tickets to one, must dig them out.

LentilAsAnything · 02/08/2013 23:34

Travelling to London. Rain would have been welcome. It was scorching. Still baking hot today.

Which indoor play area? How was it? We went to softplay today, DS loves it, and I haven't managed to go in Dundee yet.

LEDundeeAngus · 05/08/2013 12:18

We didn't get there in the end. Waiting for tradesmen to arrive, then got distracted by other stuff. We haven't been to many soft play areas really, as my kids are getting a bit old for them.

How was your wedding? Our one went well, even if I was a bit worried that the groom might fall over since he started drinking at 9.30am and was supping from a hip flask right before the ceremony.

Was also VERY [catbummouth] at a cousin letting his baby daughter drink the dregs of his beer bottle. 'Oh, she loves the taste of beer' he laughed as I looked stonily at him.

Later someone said to me, 'Oh, you lot were always the posh Dundee side of the family'.

Do you reckon 'posh' and 'Dundee' have ever been paired before? :)

LentilAsAnything · 06/08/2013 22:29

I think there are posh areas. There are certainly stunning houses and even some little castles!

Poor baby. Alcohol is actually officially a poison!

The wedding was gorgeous, though the poor bride came down with shingles a few days prior. Luckily her face was clear, and the dressmaker did some last minute adjustments to cover any patches on her chest, arms and back. Poor darling girl. She looked great (my latest Fb profile pic is her and me), and seemed to be fighting any pain with ease.

LEDundeeAngus · 08/08/2013 10:20

oooh, shingles are nasty. My mum had them years ago and it was horrible. Was it the stress of the wedding then?

Off golfing today (how very middle class of me!) as the kids are going to the park with my mum and aunt. Dh is off this week and we are having a week holiday at home.

LentilAsAnything · 08/08/2013 17:05

I don't really know if it was stress, or just bad luck. But she looked lovely, so thank goodness it wasn't so bad.

Ooh, golfing, get you! :) We've had a day of waiting in for deliveries!

LEDundeeAngus · 09/08/2013 10:18

We have recently started golfing again, but are both absolutely terrible. It was good fun though.

Spending the day working on Mumsnet stuff - am writing up the 10 Reasons to live in Dundee/Angus - come over and add your opinion on the chat thread.

Did anyone go to Dare to Be Digital? If you have preteens or teens, then it is great fun - lots of games for the kids to try.

LentilAsAnything · 09/08/2013 12:25

As long as it was fun, that is the main thing.

I added my opinions, limited as they currently are! :)

LEDundeeAngus · 12/08/2013 09:12

Thanks, Lentil. I have sent away the copy to MNHQ so the feature should be on the site later this week.

Am hoping that the response will be generally positive. I was quite surprised at the reaction to that thread recently.

How was your weekend? Everyone ready for BACK TO SCHOOL?!

In typical me fashion, we haven't got anything sorted out for going back to school so it is going to be a mad rush into town later. I will need cake.

LentilAsAnything · 12/08/2013 11:47

I thought there'd be more responses, going by how many Dundee residents there seemed to be on that first thread.

Someone posted about this, in case you missed it: www.wedundee.com/

We had quite a chilled weekend, our first in ages, what with moving and weddings in Surrey.

No back to school for us as a) he's only two and b) we homeschool. :)
Happy shopping!

LEDundeeAngus · 13/08/2013 11:41

Yes, thought there would be more on that thread too, but still quite quiet here on the local boards (although going by the stats I can see, there are lots and lots of lurkers).

Show yourselves, don't be shy. Anyone can post here, it isn't a private club.

Big sigh of relief that the kids are back in school. Went to see my niece going for her first day today. The little ones are sooooo cute, aren't they?

LentilAsAnything · 13/08/2013 23:40

Yeah, come on, you lot! Can't be just ed and me!

Oh boo. I think that means the pool won't have their waves and rapid river going until 4 o'clock during term time. Toddler section should still be going, but DS loves the rapid river the most, at the moment. We could go after 4, I guess.

popcorngazebo · 14/08/2013 11:00

Hi hi hi, just found this this morning through Facebook - thought I'd say hi!

We lived in Dundee for around 12 years, just recently moved to Forfar but still working in Dundee.

LEDundeeAngus · 14/08/2013 12:43

Oh, do they shut down parts of it during the day when the school kids aren't there? That is a shame. What about visiting kids from England, or abroad? Bit short sighted of them.

Hello Popcorn. How are you finding Forfar in comparison to Dundee then? We townies like to think you all go about in wellies all day, but I hear you have pavements and everything up there now [tongue very firmly in cheek]

popcorngazebo · 14/08/2013 16:04

Oh I love it! I'm a Dundonian transplant - grew up in a small town on the Moray coast so Forfar is much more like where I grew up.

The house prices were cheaper too which probably tipped us over the edge. The street that we lived in in Dundee had kinda gone to shit so we were glad to have managed to sell up and move out. Just need a job that I can wear wellies to all day and I'll be sorted ;)

They used to shut the more exciting bits off during the day in the old Olympia too. Remember going swimming pre-DS and being thoroughly annoyed that all I could do was, well, swim!

MissSunnyDundee · 14/08/2013 17:21

Nothing much to add I'm afraid, but I'm coming for a visit this weekend and am very excited Grin

New babies to visit and a trip to Camperdown - if it stays dry Smile

LentilAsAnything · 14/08/2013 17:47

Hi, popcorn!
We are househunting so please feel free to warn me off which streets have gone to shit!

Yeah, the flumes and stuff are closed when it's not so busy, I guess they don't find it worthwhile re staff and running costs.

Have a great trip, Sunny!

mrmj · 14/08/2013 20:44

Hey popcorn, im forfar too :D

mrmj · 14/08/2013 20:46

Has anyone been to the new Olympia? Ive not been but lots of people saying that the fun bit is really quite small compared to the last Olympia. Is it bad that I dont really care about the Olympic sized pool thats not Olympic sized and wished they'd just made a bigger better fun pool?

LEDundeeAngus · 14/08/2013 21:46

mrmj
my DC have been with my mum and liked it, but nephew said that he preferred the old Olympia. I had a peek when I was down there last week and the fun bit is really small, in comparison to the size of the building. I was slightly underwhelmed tbh.

Sunny
how loved. Do wave when you pass - I live quite close to Camperdown.

Popcorn
We were happy with the relatively cheap houses here in Dundee. Alternative was Munich or London, which was much more expensive. Is Forfar even cheaper then?
