ooh the excitement of starting a new thread Grin

We went to the park to practise cycling. Well, the kids did. I just stood there terrified at how they race down slopes... They don't seem to mind cycling up slopes or falling over. Hmm

Homework tomorrow - record the meals of the day. What outrageous things can we have for breakfast lunch and dinner? Grin

Kora · 13/09/2011 21:51

Blimey eventful few days. Vbus, very sorry to hear about SIL, close friend of mine had similar experience last year, v Sad.

KewC, glad you escaped dramatic tree falls - and well done on your brilliant postings on the secondary school thread. Hope some difference will be made after the debate, even if for the academy front.

Sfx, hope your DD is feeling a bit better. Every time I see her she is so lovely, whatever happens at school she is clearly thriving on so many levels.

On the subject of which.... We had teacher home visit today. All fine more or less, although new teacher obviously very reliant on TA, she kept asking her for answers to my questions about day to day classroom organisation stuff. Didn't fill me with confidence Hmm Also didn't like it when she remarked that she liked the fact DD1 seemed to be of the type to tell others to behave, which was "useful in the classroom". I tried to tell her that although DD1 behaves quite well (most of the time, definitely not all!), she might get a bit distracted if others don't or even upset if she felt she can't be heard. It's fine to have good influences, but it's not down to my four year-old to keep order in the classroom! Oh dear, I'm sure she didn't mean it that way, but recently I saw a documentary on how some teachers deliberately sit the studious ones next to the more challenging ones, which didn't always seem to be implemented that well - making life a bit of a misery for the children shown in the programme! But who knows how they edited it. Must try to remain open-minded til I see what happens in reality. I liked the TA more, although both seemed very positive and into what they were doing. DD1 seems to like them which is the main thing!

Copper, today I made spanish omelette with rice instead of potatoes, as we had leftovers. It was edible but I'm glad there wasn't a meal diary in operation...

sfxmum · 13/09/2011 21:51

vbus it should be exciting and rewarding and sort out the microwave meals and the take away menus Grin

copper the very reason why it is so hard for big people to learn how to cycle

I missed practice today because there were workmen in the basement, where I wobble about, will try to fit it in tomorrow at some point.

sfxmum · 13/09/2011 21:55

kora i take it that the TA was J she is very experienced very competent and very diplomatic working with teachers, afaik the teacher is new to the school so Ta would kn ow more about routines and school policies.

dd had that TA for 2yrs and really loved her, I liked her too
and thanks for praise Smile she is settling but I think it will take another week or so before it all feels more like a routine.

Kora · 13/09/2011 23:17

Yes, that's the TA, v impressive and warm. I feel harsh now about teacher. She was perfectly nice and I did like her mostly. I kind of just want things to get started now, it's been so drawn out.

Does anyone know anywhere good to go in Scotland for a weekend in autumn without breaking bank and suitable for 1yr old as well as 4 year old? Now the weather's turning, I'm pining for mountains, hearty food and hospitality. Had some great times there in town and countryside, but before family status...

UptoapointLordCopper · 14/09/2011 10:48

Hello!

Been to school and shop. DS1 had massive tantrum about reading book and water bottle. Trying to convince him that no water bottle is leak-proof if you don't bloody close the top yourself, and no there are no monsters who come and open the cap so you get a wet bookbag, and nobody came and wrote in the reason why the robot is called Petey after he's read the book. Hmm Hmm

Kora - LOL at spanish omelette with rice. But there is a version we did before which was rather nice. As for Scotland - we went to Edinburgh for a week in Easter with kids. Stayed central with access to private garden so kids get to run about and did one or two excursions. Did HIghlands etc prekids ...

sfxmum · 14/09/2011 22:11

hello all

Kora maybe that should be called a paella with too many eggs Grin

copper is work timetable sorted yet?

I had a full on day with the sort of thing that stresses me out, parents coffee morning, pack loads of home stuff, take not very co operative child to swimming class, go and meet to meet the teacher evening with all the other parents aaaarrrgh i need a rest from people Grin

sfxmum · 14/09/2011 22:12

can't hep with Scotland but that flat looks nice and we are still planning on making it to Edinburgh soon

I think I managed to keep it all together Hmm more or less

Kewcumber · 14/09/2011 23:59

god the damn wet book bag syndrome! Why can't they just get a drink of water from the tap like we used to - why do they need water instantly available at every moment of the day which necessitates a full water bottle from the moment they leave the house... ? Why?

UptoapointLordCopper · 15/09/2011 09:36

Kew - my realistic pessimistic view is that the wet book bag syndrome would persist even if they drink out of a tap. It's just that the reasons would be more exasperating imaginative. No doubt it would happen even in the Gobi desert.

Speaking of which did anyone see the dinosaur programmes on BBC2 and 4 last night? The one about myths and dinosaur was quite fun. Presenter with plastic dinosaurs pretend-fighting. Grin

sfxmum · 15/09/2011 09:44

hello

I don't always send water in, fairly sure she will not wilt completely.
Missed telly prog. far too irked about parental overinvolvement nuttyness from meet the teacher stuff last night
apparently what is needed is weekly reports of what is being taught in class so we can give them extra exercises at home to consolidate knowledge

anyway
dd still reluctant to go to school, swimming ok yesterday, she likes the friends she goes with and is getting used to the teacher, ballet tonight, hoping she enjoys it

UptoapointLordCopper · 15/09/2011 10:05

sfx - Shock at nutty parents. Weekly reports!? Mental. Having said that we have homework which doubles as telling-parents-what's-going-on. The other method of finding out what's going on is actually talking to your kids. Is that too obvious?

So first meal of meal diary: marmite and jam sandwich for breakfast. Hmm Grin

UptoapointLordCopper · 15/09/2011 10:07

Of course talking to kids doesn't always work. But you get interesting misinformation at random order and it's just so much more fun than straight data.

sfxmum · 15/09/2011 10:11

I think the idea is extra worksheet but failing that sufficient info so that worksheets can be sorted to further their learning at home and more home work please.
I thought that general interaction with children will contribute to their development rather that making it formal

Kewcumber · 15/09/2011 12:18

Thankfully sfx, we don't have many class parents like that (one or two but they sidle up to teacher separately!).

DS loves after school tennis - hurrah!

sfxmum · 15/09/2011 12:32

KewC I had two separate conversations on the subject, privately and they both ended up badly, as I got really really pissed off 'well some children there are never really going to achieve are they' wtf!
this after mentioning that all children learn in different ways
yeah for tennis Smile

tillyfernackerpants · 15/09/2011 12:54

Sfx, oh dear re nutty parents, our school seems relatively sane Grin

Kew, have sent you a message through MN, sorry but have lost your email address!

Ds1 started Beavers last night, he really enjoyed it. He'll start football next week as well!

Kewcumber · 15/09/2011 13:26

how was ds at beavers? I hope to get DS in around half term (think he's just to tored at the moment to do tennis and beavers... must go off and email them... to see if they have a space.

Have replied

UptoapointLordCopper · 15/09/2011 13:31

Shock at "some children there are never really going to achieve are they".

Have they got very compliant children who will put up with extra homework sheets or are they willing to do battle in order to ensure their children's "achievement"?

I have a friend who has a very compliant DS1 (very nice child, sociable, fun, clever, and compliant - perfect, really, but don't get them very often, I think) and a "normal" DS2. She said several times about how "difficult" her DS2 was and I'm afraid I just laughed at her. Blush Grin

sfxmum · 15/09/2011 13:38

there are many reasons why children comply, from wanting to please to being pleased at the 1:1 attention

anyway I seem to be a careless parent Grin

beavers seem popular around these parts I think there is a unit or whatever they are called in Kew

sfxmum · 15/09/2011 13:44

tilly re Game of Thrones does the bastard son thrive? just want to know as actor playing him (Jon snow I think) is super cuteGrin I might pick up the books when the degree module kicks in
I loved the character of the Daenerys shame about the husband but it will start a major arc for her. I heard the poor daughter/s who witnessed the execution is in for some awful stuff

anyway as you were

vbus · 15/09/2011 13:45

Hello all

I agree the whole homework thing is pretty OTT and nuts, I cannot stand all this asking for extra home work and forcing kids into activities against their will Angry. We have a school curriculum meeting in 2wks and virtually no homework til then which is fine by me. DS1 started computer club, the geek streak continues Grin

Copper - what is meal diary for? Sorry I missed that

Completely missed dino prog, must catch up on i-player. Been busy sorting out kitchen and quotes etc. Went to see One day last night, it was good once you got past the dodgy accent Hmm

OP posts:
tillyfernackerpants · 15/09/2011 13:50

sfx, just started 2nd book, he's doing well so far Grin. Didn't watch the tv series, will get dh to download it for me!

sfxmum · 15/09/2011 14:01

vbus I want to see Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, love Gary Oldman so seldom have a chance to watch him on screen

well done on computer club
I must confess to dreading the ballet thing but she wanted to try and if she likes it it shall become part of our week

UptoapointLordCopper · 15/09/2011 14:10

Yes to tinker tailor soldier spy!
