Tilly he has shown himself to be quite the misogynist so and so, honestly the things he comes up with in recent interviews and particularly his latest tv show are just Shock well maybe not shock but arse

vbus not read that sounds interesting
I am reading the Mitford sisters letters really enjoying it, much more than I thought I would have a few lined up as I always do but I usually go with whatever I fancy once the current books is over and done with although I have Kate Atkison& Atwood & William Gibson latests staring at me can't wait for it but might be post exam/ summer reads

tillyfernackerpants · 01/03/2011 17:19

Sfx, thanks, haven't seen his programme or interviews but will take your word for it that he is an arse Wink

vbus, where's your book club? I go to one in my library, we haven't read that one though. The last one provoked a really interesting & wide-ranging discussion, usually its just if we liked it or not Grin

OP posts:
vbus · 01/03/2011 17:49

Tilly - Which book was that? One of the school mums is in a club and she invited me to join. She said it's usually quite informal but there is one person who really takes it quite seriously. As long as there is some Wine involved I don't mind

vbus · 01/03/2011 17:51

Sfx - which KA book have you got? quite like hers

sfxmum · 01/03/2011 19:00

vbus I have Case Histories, when will there be good news and behind the scenes I should have another one about but I read these recently, latecomer. also the very newest I got for my birthday can't remember title

UptoapointLordCopper · 01/03/2011 19:51

I'm fighting with DS1 to read How to Twist a Dragon's Tale, 5th in the series of How to Train your Dragon. It's fab. Grin

UptoapointLordCopper · 01/03/2011 21:54

Finished the dragon book. Brought a tear to my eyes. Shock What a fantastic book!

My new blender has arrived. Made very hot sauce for speg. Come to think of it maybe tear in my eyes due to that rather than book!?

What to read next?

dustythedolphin · 01/03/2011 22:18

I used to be in a drinking book club, must find one here

VBus haven't read that yet, looks interesting tho'

dustythedolphin · 01/03/2011 22:19

SFX I like KA, what is her new one called?

sfxmum · 01/03/2011 22:29

dolphin 'started early took, my dog' it is another Brodie novel

copper was that bedtime reading? we are just starting on chapter books

UptoapointLordCopper · 02/03/2011 07:49

Good morning! Been awake since 5am. Shock

Made banana and blueberry pancakes for breakfast. 15 minutes to make, about 2 minutes to gobble it all up.

sfx - DS1 reads it himself. I read it too so that I can explain certain concepts and words, things like exile not being common occurrences these days. So it's in my interest to choose nice fun books to read. Certainly beats Ben10 Alien Force. Grin But I would read just about anything, me. Apart from Sebastian F**ks.

tillyfernackerpants · 02/03/2011 08:17

Copper, will try & get the Dragon books. Ds1 prefers chapter books now, have been reading The Secret Seven & Dinosaur Cove

vbus, it was War of the Worlds, unfortunately as ours is in the library we have no Wine but do get Biscuit

Also like KA, have Good News to read, Sfx hope you enjoy the latest MA

Had first class of new course last night, went ok, have one woman who I think will question everything I say!

OP posts:
vbus · 02/03/2011 09:27

Tilly - I'm hoping there will be Wine and Biscuit, is that being greedy? Grin
Glad course was ok, hope the one person doesn't get too annoying!

DS1 still really loves reading mainly reference books. He has one about human body atm which he loves, such a geek Wink

I was v. shouty this morning Blush, couldn't get back to sleep after 3am and DS was dragging his feet getting out of the door saying he was too tired to go to school and he has learnt enough already. Going to need caffiene today

UptoapointLordCopper · 02/03/2011 09:30

LOL at having learnt enough already. Grin Good excuse!

sfxmum · 02/03/2011 10:15

hello all

peace quiet and no one but me at home todaySmile

sorry about the lack of sleep and LOL at Vbus ds1Grin

tilly how great that your group read a classic sci-fi text wonderful, I often find that the perception we have of classics can be quite different from what we experience when reading it, case in point was Dracula, thoroughly enjoyable and thankfully nothing like that film with Gary Oldman

  • and about troublesome group lady just flatter her and if she continues being difficult allude to her anxiety in understanding mannerGrin is that mean?

copper dd wanted pizza for breakfast I sort of let her have it, pancakes yum

sfxmum · 02/03/2011 10:18

btw do any of you want to go to the Women March next Tuesday? here
I went last year and would like to go again this year

tillyfernackerpants · 02/03/2011 12:17

sfx, its taken a while, we had to have a bit of a rant at the librarian as he seemed to think that a book group full of women only wanted to read chick-lit type books & nothing serious Hmm. He's finally got the message though Grin

Thanks re woman, tried to acknowledge her feelings, hopefully she'll get more into it!!

OP posts:
tillyfernackerpants · 02/03/2011 12:58

sfx, would love to, sounds really good. But teaching Tues eve so will probably need the daytime to get ready (not that I'm a last minute organiser, nope not at all!)

steppie, have you heard yet??

OP posts:
vbus · 02/03/2011 13:24

Sfx - looks good but will have to pass as have to pick up Ds1 and his friend for playdate

Tilly - does librarian choose the books for you?

Copper - I would've laughed myself if I hadn't been so cross Grin Thankfully day has been better since

tillyfernackerpants · 02/03/2011 13:27

vbus, usually as it depends on what they have in the library stock. But we've given him a list of books & genres we'd like to try so at least we get variety now.

OP posts:
sfxmum · 02/03/2011 13:56

I have never been in a book club, have very erratic reading habits but I love listening to what others think of the books

the problem I am now having with dd is that she decided there are boys and girls type movies and booksShock so she will say I think that is boyish and I would not like it because I am a girl

my own reading was very uncensored when growing up, I am sure I read stuff only meant for over 20's well before I was even 15, but mostly if I did get into it I would read, if not just leave it aside for later

regarding the march thing not sure yet if I can actually go, it was fun last year and ended up having lunch at the south bank in a very sunny day

Kewcumber · 02/03/2011 14:58

sfx I read so much as a child (on a "bad" day would chekc out 3 books form teh library and take them back having red them at lunchtime and get three more for the afternoon) that at 11 they signed me up to the adults library as I had pretty much run out of books at the childrens library. DOn;t think anyone ever checked what I was reading so I'm pretty sure I was reading adult stuff by about 12 - don;t remember any of it being particularly inappropriate though.

tillyfernackerpants · 02/03/2011 15:24

Kew, I was the same, signed up to the adult library with my parents permission at 11, one of the librarians didn't like it though & always looked very disapproving of what I took out!

OP posts:
sfxmum · 02/03/2011 15:34

we had many books at home and I went through them, I can't recall reading specifically children's books but we did have a mobile library coming around once it a while, third world country that it was, not much in way of public libraries then and besides reading was considered subversive (some of it) in the old regime, people kept books hidden can't recall censorship at home, I would just ask my mother if I did not understand something
weirdly when my father left the war one of the gifts of the new regime was a bunch of titles specifically printed for the edification of the troops (got to love the communists) it was fab so many classics

dustythedolphin · 02/03/2011 16:25

SFX Wimmin's mrach looks good

Bought that new KA book 'started early took, my dog' today in Tescos :)

We always had a house full of books whilst growing up and it was drummed into us that reading is one of the real pleasures in life - which it is, when you can get time to enjoy it Wink
