Cinders, what exactly do the kg teachers say? How long has he been there?
Do they know you are also an Erzieherin? Might help, and even if you weren't, you know your son better than anyone, don't let them bully you.
Have years of experience with "only want to help" German mil so do post, have come through battle-scarred but victorious

Oh the joys of Laterne, Laterne and the Halloween parties! The Germans have adopted Halloween big time haven't they? I just bought some of those Lebkuchen biscuits in Lidl, all the Christmas biccies are on the shelves!

It's my bday today - a horrid number with a zero on the end! I'm making an apple pie to have warm with cream later but not celebrating otherwise, too exhausted. We could have a little mn online party maybe!

finknottle · 19/09/2008 08:39

Admylin - you should have said!

Happy Birthday

You cannot be too exhausted to pamper yourself Hope you have some Sekt ready. Am a big fan of Sekt, most vintners here make it so I am in Sekt-heaven. Have some in the fridge for later.

And am 43 btw.

And am just about coping with the end of the summer, cannot bring myself to think about Hallow...St Mart...Ch... No no no no no.

I like the thread title, Finknottle.

I am waiting for the DC to start singing their autumn songs. There was one about Herbstwind, it was pretty.

Last day before the removal company comes that I have the kids out of the house, so I need to do some organising today.

Yesterday was so hectic, it was awful. DS had a friend here yesterday, and normally I would just let them go outside and play, but his friend is almost deaf so I am too worried that he might not hear a car drive into the courtyard. This meant I had to sit out and watch them for 2 hours.

DS always astounds me when he speaks to his friend, he is using some sign language and speaks very clearly, moving his mouth in an exaggerated way so that Sebastian can lipread easier. Incredible how children adapt to friends with SN.

MmeLindt · 19/09/2008 08:42

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ADMYLIN

We can have an online tipple, have you all got your glasses ready?

thequietone · 19/09/2008 08:44

Cheers, Admylin! Happy Birthday!!!

Thanks! I did manage to remember to buy a bottle of wine and I treated myself to some nice baguette and different cheeses and red and green grapes so I'll make a nice cheese board and open the wine tonight.

I'm saying I'm too exhausted to celebrate but even if I wanted to we don't know anyone here anyway so it wouldn't be a big party! My family back home always do mega parties for special birthdays, things like surprise parties or big barbeques or such like so I must admit I had a sorry for myself moment at the breakfast table when the brats dc didn't even say happy birthday.

I bet they are just all wrapped up in themselves at the moment.

Never mind, we will have a wee online party

Saves me from doing any more packing

admylin · 19/09/2008 08:54

I've just put a picture of the wedding in Houston on the profile. All the big lads at the back to the left are my nephews! The rest are SIL and BIL and nieces. Any the 2 old guys at the back are h and his brother!

You really are calm mmlindt! Are you getting excited?

finknottle · 19/09/2008 09:01

How was the wedding? Looks wonderfully colourful. What did you wear in the end?

Your children are gorgeous

Gad, I was just about to start chatting when baby's just woken. Have to go...quick question though. I really want to make gingerbread men with DS1 but can't find how to make it German-style. ie. what do you use instead of golden syrup, and what's it called in the supermarket? If anyone can help that'd be fab. DS1 was sobbing uncontrollably at KiGa this morning and I'm so upset

admylin · 19/09/2008 09:08

Oh no it breaks your heart when they sob at Kindergarten. I still remember it as if it was yesterday, it'll never leave me how ds was held back by the erzieherin screaming and sobbing for me not to leave him. He settled of course but it was horrid.

No idea about the syrup but you could get it online from foodfromhome website. They aren't too expensive either because they are based in Germany so postage is cheap. Off to make apple pie, see you all later.

taipo · 19/09/2008 09:12

Happy birthday, Admylin!

I had my big one with the zero at the end last year if it's any consolation

Thequiteone, there's something called Karamellsirup but it's definitely not the same as golden syrup. Might be OK for gingerbread men though.

hupa · 19/09/2008 09:20

Happy Birthaday admylin

.

the quietone sorry to hear about ds - its heartbreaking when they do that.
Sorry I don´t know what you could use instead of golden syrup. Baking and cooking not being my strengths, but I´m sure someone will be along who does.

MmeLindt · 19/09/2008 09:26

Thequietone
Horrible, isn't it when they cry like that. Do you know if he settled when you were away?

Sorry, no idea about Golden Syrup, I don't think you will find it in a normal supermarket, just in speciality shops.

finknottle · 19/09/2008 09:28

There's some gloop which was recommended a while back, try searching 'golden syrup Germany'

Must go and pack - we are camping tomorrow, big regatta. We're going to freeze, aren't we? Must find thermal underwear.

Have a great day Admylin & Euch auch

quietone - we have an English supermarket for the army which sells it. If you're anywhere near us, I'll get you some!

Gracelo · 19/09/2008 09:48

This www.grafschafter.de/produkte/heller_sirup.html

is pretty close to golden syrup. Not sure how available it is throughout Germany.

I wish I could get Federweisser in Scotland.

Happy birthday, Admylin.

cindersIncircles · 19/09/2008 10:12

oh my i am having a nightmare morning with ds

one of my good friends here has offered support

MmeLindt · 19/09/2008 11:37

Gracelo
Where are you in Scotland? We took Federweisen over on the ferry one time, praying the whole night that it would not explode all over the boot of the car. It was fine but the car smelt like a brewery. Luckily the customs guys did not ask us to open the window.

I have very fond memories of drinking Federweisen with my parents and Mum's cousin in Newton Stewart, near Dumfries.

Cinders
If your friend can help translate, then take her along. Might help avoid misunderstandings. That was good of her to offer.

Have you all gone back to bed in a Sekt-induced stupor?

cindersIncircles · 19/09/2008 12:26

oh ah

think i would love to be in a sekt haze

well ds has stopped fighting with the puppy

and im pondering on where I went wrong, ds is a live wire but there is also something else

Gracelo · 19/09/2008 13:08

I'm in North Argyll, Mme Lindt. We always fly. I've never taken the ferry.
I was in Germany at Federweissen-time last year (for the first time in about 10 years) but I was pregnant and my Federweisser intake was closely monitored by my sister. She also only let me have Federweisser which hadn't fermented much and had barely any alcohol.
I love the smell that hangs over the wine growing areas in autumn.
I'm planning to make a Zwiebelplaatz this weekend. I'll have a bottle Silvaner with it.

admylin · 20/09/2008 21:29

Well I spent my birthday curled up on the sofa asleep most of the afternoon! It was OK - I suppose i'm exhausted so it was the best thing to go on strike for an afternoon! I made a deal with the dc that it's mum's birthday so no fighting allowed atleast 'til midnight and they managed to keep the deal too.

Then forgot I was going to have the wine with h in the evening and I went and brushed my teeth with really strong minty toothpaste so the wine was disgusting, he drank it by himself and then also fell asleep on the sofa! What a dynamic energetic lot we are eh.
