Wow we filled the thread guys. So as I was about to Say UR you've probably had squirrel if you've eaten Chinese . Think I've had most things. Just don't ask eat. Roasting hot here, very busy but having a blast. Enjoyed our new gym yesterday and picnic in the park tonight which was wonderful. Live music, handsome young men - need I say more.

mananny, I've tried to CAT you regarding meeting up while I am there, but your profile is set to not receive CAT. If you'd like to change this, or CAT me, then please do so. Your offer to visit would be lovely.

mananny · 17/11/2008 04:51

Ooops that's because I haven't paid the fiver this year. You can email me on [email protected]

It'd be great to actually meet another MNer in Real Life. And I know you'll be going through some tough stuff while you're here in Boston so I'd really like to be a helpful and/or pleasant distraction

SuperBunny · 17/11/2008 05:36

Ooo, you've been a busy bunch this weekend. I have lots of questions:

What's mush, Dooney? Are you getting enough protein? I get so fed up with that question. Did you find my mile-long list? Is it any good? I think I need to look at it again. Are you feeling better?

Anorak, I want to see your meal ideas too [frustrated & uninspired veggie]

How was James Bond, Ali.

What's Sugar sand, Early?

Cali, how do you get free turkeys? I want a fried one. This talk of food is making me hungry.

Welcome Tangerine! I think DC - NYC is doable but perhaps not preferable. Amtrak run between the two cities but the drive is not the most pleasant.

Manannny - v exciting. I want details [nosey]

SuperBunny · 17/11/2008 05:44

I forgot to say:

Hope all goes well in Boston, Anorak.

LOL. It seems like such an odd thing to give away! I think it would be pretty much impossible to spend less than $100 on a family of four. I am sure there are lots of places you could donate to, if you needed to.

Yes, everyone here has their Turkeys already. Very organised. I need to work out where I am going for Thanksgiving (if anywhere) and what I will eat.

Earlybird · 17/11/2008 14:56

jabber - deep fried turkey sounds impossibly fattening (which means divine!). Any idea where to get one in TN?

Superbunny - sugar sand is almost pure white, extremely fine-grained and so soft it is almost like walking in flour. It's the sort of sand you find on the Gulf Coast of America.

dooneygirl · 17/11/2008 16:11

They had them at Costco, Earlybird. I cannot imagine they wouldn't carry turkey fryers in the South.

I got my turkey free, too. Last year you only had to spend $100, and I got 3 free turkeys, but this year it was $150. However, with the 2 of mine being so sick, we were down to the dregs of food, and with having to get cat and dog food it wasn't hard to get that much. I don't think I'll be able to get another one, though. I had one for Thanksgiving, one for Christmas, and then donated one to DS' teacher, as her church was doing a food drive.

Hi Tangerine!! I live in Oregon, but have been to NYC multiple times, sometimes for weeks on end, and have tried to drive and fly out of the city for weekends, and have to say with those two options, there is no way I would ever attempt it. Unless your DH likes to fly over the airport forever in an endless holding pattern, or sit on the freeway backed up for hours on end. (I will never fly into a NYC airport unless I am actually flying to NYC, and we will ALWAYS pay more to avoid having a stopover there, as we are always backed up, or sitting on the tarmac for hours, or have landed, but they have nowhere to put the plane, and you have to wait and wait for a people mover to come get you.) Never done the trains on weekends, though.

SB, I feel like crap!!! They're definitely better, though, so it makes it all okay. I got too tired to look for your list, and will do so later, for sure. Mush is like grits, only made out of corn, so it tastes better, and despite the name isn't as mushy. You can make it the night before, and let it set in the refrigerator, and cut it up in slices to fry. I don't looove it, but Colin does, and I like it, and you can put maple syrup on it, anyway.

Sugar sand sounds wonderful

Mush sounds rather strange. I thought grits was corn. Not that it matters because I don't like it, whatever it is made of.

LOL @ Cali and the curse of the free turkey

Get well soon, Dooney. Am glad the DC are better.

dooneygirl · 17/11/2008 19:37

Corn MEAL. It would help if I didn't leave out a word, I guess. Mush is strange. I cannot stress how much Colin loves it. Colin seriously is one of those kids that just goes to the beat of his own drummer.

Have you thought of opening up your own Thanksgiving dinner place, Cali? I feel so awful today, but the Curse of the Free Turkeys is making me laugh.

SuperBunny · 17/11/2008 19:43

Ah, cornmeal. I have some of that. I may make mush for breakfast tomorrow.

jabberwocky · 18/11/2008 01:00

you really have to try fried turkey earlybird . From what I understand the oil is so hot that you really don't get any into the bird iykwim so I don't think it's actually more fattening. At one time you could have it done at grocery stores like Kroger. Not sure who all does it in Nashville area but there's got to be some places around. Or you can buy your own setup but just remember to do it outside well away from the house.

SuperBunny · 18/11/2008 03:36

Where is the FOOC thread? I can't find it anywhere.

alipiggie · 18/11/2008 03:48

Fried Turkey is delish - had it last Thanksgiving. This year goodness knows, weirdly we're going to Ex's for dinner, the boys and I with him and his new woman. I know, I know all very strange, hopefully the boys are happy we get on. The things we do for our kids.

James was handsome, those eyes, deep deep sigh. Now if I could only find my own Bond to whisk me away from all the despair. Anorak will be thinking of you often.

FOOC for SB

SuperBunny · 18/11/2008 04:09

Thanks Dooney.

Bond sounds great.

I accidentally went out for dinner with a man yesterday. That doesn't make it a date, does it? Just dinner with a friend?

Earlybird · 18/11/2008 15:40

dooney (and anyone else) - once again, that brined turkey recipe sounds yum.

I now see that organic brined turkeys can be bought (at our newly opened Trader Joe's!). Anyone know if they are just as good as brining yourself? Wondering if buying brined will save me time, labor and then I won't have to buy all the brining ingredients?

SuperBunny · 18/11/2008 18:15

Hooray for Trader Joes!

I had mush today and it was delicious. It's just like semolina which is odd because I hate semolina.

alarkaspree · 18/11/2008 18:24

Tangerine, welcome in advance. Where are you going to be living? I am in Battery Park area, have been in NYC since August.

Anorak, very best of luck.

dooneygirl · 18/11/2008 22:43

Earlybird, I think I love you. You're just as nutty about your turkey as I am. I have no idea about pre-brined turkey, but can't see why they'd be that different. You'd have to be a really crazy person to have the right sized bucket and all the brining ingredients on hand. I mean, who would have all that stuff on hand. (Please do not come and look in my pantry, btw.)

I'm glad you like mush. I told Colin that you did. His response was "Uh-huh. Spiderman to the rescue." He was thrilled, as you can tell. How do you accidentally go out with a man for dinner? I once "accidentally" went out with DH, but that was a result of overhearing where he was going, and conveniently making my way there before he got there.
