WEll it'll be hot work in August. I think a crate of something to drink wouldn't go amiss. I don't think I would have provided food unless it was students from the university doing it. A bag of Schrippen and a jar of Bockwurst?

SSSandy2 · 28/05/2008 11:19

No you don't unload, carry things .That's what you're paying for.

  1. No food.
  1. Don't help but BE there and be BOSSY otherwise you'll find like I did that even though you say as they come in the house, "All black furniture is EG, brown wood is 1.OG and all light wood is 2.OG" and you have written EG/1.OG/2.OG in HUGE black letters on everything you will end up with the black stuff (heavy bookshelves for h's study) on the 2.OG and have to move them down 2 floors yourself.
  1. Whoever does it, get a written Auftrag stating fee and conditions (i.e. stuff into rooms not outside house) and have them sign it. We got our movers from MyHammer too and although they were the Laurel and Hardy of the Removal World, when there was a dispute about painting/fees/finishing I threatened them with a lawyer. Sorted.
  1. Buy Gin or tipple of choice. Moving is more stress than you imagine and then some.
  1. Tell your h to butt out and let you do it or he can organise it himself and you'll go off and visit the finknottles and stay out of his way till it's done...
admylin · 28/05/2008 11:33

Thanks for the tip about the Gin, I will do that!

You sound so experienced. Did you take the lowest bid on MyHammer? Do you think there will be trouble if I don't take any of them? They all seem to be sending me phone numbers via the forum part of it as if they want to avoid the fee.

Oh no I hope it doesn't get so nasty that I have to start threatening with a lawyer when we move! I will consult on here before I sign any contracts OK!

SSSandy2 · 28/05/2008 11:38

you're doing an absolutely fantastic job admylin. That' good advice from finks about getting in writing that they put the boxes inside. Could imagine them just being dumped in the street and you left standing there

As for the garden water, h is going to try and get a connecting bit to fit on the broken pipe and then attach a new tap/standpipe to it.
It's usually him who breaks things so I think he's enjoying this Don't know if such a connecting bit exists at all but he's going to look tonight.

Hose to children's bathroom doesn't work - hose connectors are old design, taps new. So I am lugging watering cans up and down stairs. Veg garden is a wee bit away from the house, am developing muscles like Popeye.

admylin · 28/05/2008 11:41

Oh well get those biceps ready for sleevless tops and all this summer!

finknottle · 28/05/2008 11:43

Ime the cheapest are the worst. Go for someone who's price is fair as the cheapest cut corners and they will try and rip you off.

If you want to call and save them the fee, OK if you make clear you want a written Auftrag. That's the paper you wave under their nose when things go wrong, they are legally bound by it.

I was shocked at how cheeky/rude/lying scumbags they can be. So I quickly changed from being friendly and helpful to being direct and snotty and standing my ground. Developed quite a thick skin.

finknottle · 28/05/2008 11:50

Meant to add, I'd rather have spent 300 Euros more and NOT have had the Laurel & Hardy troupe. With pros (and not "borrow a van from mates and earn money by doing removals" of whom there are many) you won't have the hassle of negotiating, MyHammer, calling, insisting on the Auftragsbestaetigung etc.
Sometimes you do get what you pay for.

admylin · 28/05/2008 12:08

So doe sthat mean myhammer is going to call me if I don't book someone through them? What do you say then? I'm not moving anymore? Will have to warn h not to put his foot in it (one of his specialities)if they do phone.

finknottle · 28/05/2008 12:22

Not sure, tbh. Have mailed h to ask, he did it for us.

admylin · 28/05/2008 12:24

Thanks, will check back in tonight after our afternoon of bike fixing.

finknottle · 28/05/2008 12:26

must go too, s2 home from school and haven't paid a single bill, which was what I was meant to be doing this morning. Been on MN instead...

Will let you know what h says.

SSSandy2 · 29/05/2008 09:21

did you get the connecting bit finks?

Well walking along a busy street this morning (6 lanes), I was waiting at the lights to cross and noticed an old lady with thin white hair on her bike in the midst of the morning fray of traffic. She crossed two lanes and then went to cross over the lanes of opposing traffic too, stopping in the middle between a truck and a van, so not highly visible. At the time I just thought, eek an old lady feeling confident to cycle like that. I'd have crossed at the lights with the pedestrians.

Next thing I see she is on the other side of the street, bike on the floor and she and a man are going at it hammer and tongs. If I ride a bike here it is only ever on the pavement or a bike lane, never on the street.

So I went across to see if she was alright. They were both in the right of course and having a real go at each other. I asked her if she was ok, seemed to be, the bike was fine, the van was fine, the driver was fine. So I would have just left it but the old woman called the police in. Why though? Would you? I mean there were no witnesses to the actual accident, no one hurt, no Sachschaden and they both had an almighty shock but that was it. You couldn't prove who had been in the right.

I said as much to a lady on a bike near me and she told them to listen to the "young woman" (young?!). Thanks. So they both turned on me like I was official arbiter and ranted on their side ofthe story. Bizarre. Didn't know what to do with them really. In the end I felt a bit sorry forthe van driver, 50 odd , just looked like someone's dad on the way to work and really not a dangerous driver. There was no calming the woman down though. She had to have the police over.

Totally put me off driving. I had been considering getting a small car to get dd to school but I have a stressful route - through the centre of town a bit, onto the Stadtautobahn and round a dodgy round-about, after that it's ok but getting to there is going to be nerve-wracking every morning.

admylin · 29/05/2008 09:45

Nice start to the day SSandy! You didn't hang around for the police did you? The old lady was maybe in a bad mood this morning. You know when your day is ruined by some snotty unfriendly person - well happened to me this morning. I rang teh Frauenärztin to get an appointment and the secretary asked when it should be for so I said 'Ich möchte bitte ihre frühste Termin morgens' (bad German maybe) and she started telling me off as if I was asking for some unbelievable thing. No there are no free appointments, full up, busy, blah, blah - I tried to stick up for myself and said 'nein Sie haben mich überhaupt nicht verstanden ich meine nicht morgen sondern irgeneine morgen' - she still said no, I haven't got any appointments then but in one of those nasty voices (you know what I mean) then I said so you have no early appointments for the next 6 months or what - then she gave me one for next week but no apology for shouting down the phone at me. Argghhhh - why are they so unfriendly here, FGS it's their job and anyway it's ruined my day and I want to phone back and tell her she's a grumpy old cow but I know I can't, sigh.

I am now going to phone loads of other frauenärzte 'til lI get one that is a) friendly secretary and b) does the Krebsvorsorge as they should - without taking the Praxisgebühr.

finknottle · 29/05/2008 09:55

Morning Sandy, nothing like a drama to start your day!
If you get a runaround you'll be a lot more independent and could have great outings etc.

The connecting thingy (Kupplung for the technically minded) is apparently the right size but h can't get it on, the pipe is too stiff. Meanwhile I have watering-can-elbow which is like tennis elbow without the Barley Water.

It was 20C when the boys went to school this morning. What is going on?

Admylin, h says MyHammer changed their rules about quotes after we used them so you'll have to check the AGB's.

this it looks like you can cancel it if it's still running. AGB's do my head in, tbh. Have you got any decent quotes?

SSSandy2 · 29/05/2008 09:57

well I didn't see the point in hanging about really. When I passed the same spot on my way back, they'd gone.

I hate making phone calls here. I have become such a wimp, I try and fob that stuff off on dh as much as possible. I have a lovely Frauenarzt and the receptionists are nice too but they cater mainly to pregnant women since he is a Belegarzt and if you're not pregnant you have to wait abotu 3 months for an appointment.

I should really change but I am a bit wary. First Frauenarzt I had here was creepy, did my check-up and said "sehr schön, fest" I mean wtf?! Eek, just get on with it man and don't discuss the state of things. What is that about? So I changed. Next one was nasty and had vile receptionists (KuDamm). I overheard the receptionist tell one patient who was there with her 2 small dc that her perfume stunk. "es stinkt! Stinken, verstehen Sie, Sie stinken". FGS

Well maybe they get up at the crack of dawn to get their dc to school and then get nearly run over by a van on their way to work or stop at Plus (hiss boo) on the way but still. Maybe wait till you're in Hannover for the check-up?

SSSandy2 · 29/05/2008 10:09

This sounds like a right pain finks. Would it be worth getting someone in to attach the Kupplung thing since it sounds like your garden really needs the water atm?

Admylin, my Frauenarzt is directly at Sbhf Hohenzollerndamm which is miles from you but I can give you his details if you like. I promise you they all friendly and lovely there but I don't know if they'll have an appointment free.

admylin · 29/05/2008 10:21

Thanks, but no I'm phoning round all the ones in my area, there are quite a few and I just wish my h would get the snip or something so I didn't need the pill. I'm only going because I'm going to run out when in Texas (wonder if you can just buy the pill at the chemist in US?)

My sister gave me a good telling off yesterday too about me being too soft on h and she can not believe he isn't coming to help when we move. Very fed up feeling at themoment. Started the week trying to be positive and plan everything and just feel like saying stuff it I'm moving back to the UK with the dc.

SSSandy2 · 29/05/2008 10:23

stay positive admylin, you have done SO well. Really, it wouldn't have occurred to me to go aboutthings the way you have and it has all been really well sorted, no thanks to dh. I think you can be really proud of yourself and how well you've organised everything so far.

I do think dh has become too comfortable and relies too heavily on you taking things off his hands but you cannot turn that around from one day to the next and maybe now anyway isn't the time. THe move has to be done right, so best take care of it yourself.

OP posts:
admylin · 29/05/2008 10:28

I know - I've spoiled him now so he isn't going to change. Just have to get through it as best I can. I'm still not doing the painting though. I've aske dthe caretaker to come round on Monday to tell me exactly what he wants doing before the Schlüsselübergabe (which h has to do anyway as I'll be in Hannover already) One time when we moved house he handed over the keys and said oh just keep the deposit, I don't want any bother and the landlord did - laughing all the way to the bank probably.

SSSandy2 · 29/05/2008 10:51

You can sort him out, just add him to the list after removals, buying shoes, painting the flat etc, fix dh (And then come back and tell us how you did it!)

I have been trying to fill in some stupid forms this morning and they are so complicated. Thought I had finished but I've just seen that I got it wrong! AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH

OP posts:
admylin · 29/05/2008 11:18

That's another thing I do - all form filling in etc. Have just finished filling in h's Personalvordrucke for his new job, they need all his rentenversicherung details, proof of mitgliedschaft in krankenversicherung, thousand other proofs, copy of everything you can imagine and i've done all the running about for that. Now all he has to do is sign about 10 papers and send them off.

Have been reading a few websites (back to frauenärzte subject) and most say you can ask for the krebsvorsorge without the praxisgebühr but they then can not even speak to you, as soon as they speak to you it counts as extra Beratung and costs more - which is also not true according to my little man in AOK Baden Würtemberg where we are insured. But . that's how they do it here, I guess they can get more money out of the other kind of Beratung and probably only get a pauschal for vorsorge. Poor docs are also having a hard time of things eh, inflation etc. (that's meant ironically)

SSSandy2 · 29/05/2008 11:22

gosh admylin. I don't want to run down your dh, I'm sure he is wonderful in many ways but it really sounds like he does nothing at all except his work (admittedly he works hard at that). Dh does a great deal more, maybe in part because I am so useless at organising and I'm a bit in fear of dealing with German authorities/businesses, they get me down too much. If I felt up to doing all the things you do, he would probably welcome it.

Have to go off and make a couple of photocopies now and get this thing off (health insurance) not convinced it's correct though.

Have you noticed my enormous restraint not posting on that thread about German primary sch* btw?

OP posts:
admylin · 29/05/2008 11:26

Don't worry - same here! I was sitting reading it thinking I have to join in but then thought better of it! We've got our own thread for that! Must admit our German schools thread has been very quiet. I expect it will pick up - at the lastest when my 2 are in Hannover !
