good game tennis, really very therapeutic. Shame I'm so unfit that actually getting to the ball half kills me every time. I always see quite a few old fogeys playing tennis in the mornings too, so there is hope for me yet. May be fit by the time I'm 70 odd

admylin · 29/06/2008 15:03

I should try tennis, sounds good to get the frustration out! H wants to play squash so that would be a possibility - I just don't like those closed in training courts. I'd rather go running or something. H had his medical for his new job on Friday and they said his heart is not so great something to do with it should be 80 atleast (but 80 what? no idea) and his is 70. Meaning he has to start some sport in Hannover. The doctor said he should join a fitness club if he doesn't have the will power to go jogging. I think we need a dog, I know a couple of women who lost weight and got fit because they had to take the dog out! Wonder if I could get fit because I had to take h out for his daily walkies!! No, I'd rather have the dog.

SSSandy2 · 29/06/2008 15:07

dog would be more companionable, don't you think? I've been thinking you should get a dog in Hannover and go for walks in the morning but of course you need to organise care when you go on holiday.

I see possibilities in squash. It's quite fast so you could occasionally hit dh and pretend it was an accident.

Maybe a sportverein where the dc do something and at the same time you and h do something else? Might be good for general sociability.

Where do you play tennis SSSandy? A neighbour of mine asked me last night if I'd like to go along to her club for a game. Thing is, although I used to play a lot of tennis I haven't played properly for years and am a bit scared of making a complete fool of myself so I was wondering what your experience of clubs here is. Neighbour swears it's a very small, friendly place. I just hope she's right!

taipo · 29/06/2008 15:14

Yes, squash is fantastic for letting out all your frustrations!

admylin · 29/06/2008 15:15

A dog would be better - I'll have to look at what putting a dog in kennels would cost for the holidays. Would be sad to leave it but that'd be the only way.

When we first move I'm going to wait and see how the dc settle, how hard the new schools will be and then decide if we join a Verein or something if time allows. For now they've stopped Aikido too.

SSSandy2 · 29/06/2008 15:20

I play at the university club which I like because the atmosphere is laid back (students, lecturers and retired profs kind of thing) and with a friend who is a member of her local tennis club. That's a very posh looking place but it isn't at all snooty and we don't take the whole thing very seriously but we have never been frowned upon to my knowledge and I haven't found it unpleasant there ever. Would you have to join a club? Here you can generally also just pay for a court without making any commitment.

OP posts:
admylin · 29/06/2008 15:24

What ever I decide to start up I'll need the out fit and shoes. I don't own any proper sports shoes really - except a pair of kangaroos but they're on their last leg.

SSSandy2 · 29/06/2008 15:26

what sports did you do at school admylin? See a lot of English speaking people near where I play tennis carrying hockey sticks so there must be some kind of hockey club. That might be sociable, any kind of team sport really.

OP posts:
taipo · 29/06/2008 15:27

I'm assuming that she can take me along as a guest and then I can decide whether I'd like to join or not. I quite like the idea of joining something here as it seems to be the thing to do to belong to some Verein or other. It would be a good way of getting to know more people and get me out of the house more.

SSSandy2 · 29/06/2008 15:28

perhaps it would be a good solution taipo. I think I would go along to one of their social events perhaps before joining a club - summer barbacue or something like that to see if I liked the whole atmosphere. Does your dh play tennis too?

OP posts:
SSSandy2 · 29/06/2008 15:30

I don't know if you would have to join taipo. I have been going to my friend's club and playing with her for over a year yet I haven't joined. Wondering now whether I have been breaking the rules

admylin · 29/06/2008 15:30

In school I was in everything, on the hockey team, netball team, cross country and in gymnastic club - at 17 I could still flip over backwards and do the splits and everything - it would kill me if I even tried any of that now!

Sport is definately a good way of getting to know people though, hope you enjoy it taipo. I know alot of groups get together to go nordic walking or jogging - VHS even do some things like that in course form, good way to meet people. Listen to me, I'm going to have to try all that in Hannover or I'll go mad with no one to talk to!

SSSandy2 · 29/06/2008 15:33

Please nobody reading this thread flip over backwards and do the splits

I demonstrated the cartwheel to dd the other day, having stupidly forgotten my age and general lack of fitness. I have very painful inner thighs

OP posts:
admylin · 29/06/2008 15:33

Grrr, have to take the dc out. Their father promised he'd be back an hour ago and would go out and play football with them. As usual his feeling for time is non existant. I bet he'll be back in time to watch football or he better had be because he also promised them he'd order pizza service with them to watch. I hate it when adults promise dc things and then don't keep the promise, it's one of the worst things.

SSSandy2 · 29/06/2008 15:38

can't you call him atwork and gently remind him? Weather is nice, would be a shame not to go out for a bit. I must get on and tidy up a bit. Haven't done much of anything today.

Let us know how you get on with the tennis if you try it taipo. I don't expect they'll all be brilliant players and supercilious. I usually see a very mixed bag when I go to tennis. Maybe because I play in the mornings, it is mostly old people and beginners and only occasionally someone who is very very good. I think you should try it.

OP posts:
taipo · 29/06/2008 15:46

I think I should just take the plunge really. Probably won't play for a couple of weeks but I'll let you know how I get on. Dh doesn't really like tennis. He's keener on badminton and bought the Aldi set last week (I'm getting a bit worried about his Aldi habit actually!) but I never really got the hang of badminton so if we do any sport here it'll have to be separately I think.

SSSandy2 · 29/06/2008 15:50

Funny that I was never any good at badminton either. Go ahead and try the tennis. Or have you thought of taking a couple of lessons first to maybe just get back into the swing of things and get some practice? That might help you feel more confident about the whole thing.

Think that Aldi habit is going to be very difficult to break.

OP posts:
taipo · 29/06/2008 16:03

Lessons might be a good idea.

Think you're right about the Aldi habit. I'm quite a fan myself but we do seem to be accumulating a lot of stuff that may be cheap but I can't help wondering whether we really need the snorkel set he insisted on buying for the dc last week! And this week it was the badminton set.

admylin · 29/06/2008 17:20

Well, h still isn't back and I've got the dc doing some work for school (mean eh) and am sending them down to play in the garden soon.

Aldi and lidl (and plus) are dangerous places for being tempted - at the moment the sales are on everywhere so it's tempting in all the shops! I came home with new towels the other day - thick soft fluffy ones even though I said I wasn't buying anything before we moved! On Monday I'm going on a mission - I have to get some light summer trousers and some shoes (still) so I hope I find something.

MmeLindt · 29/06/2008 22:10

Evening all! I have been a busy bee this weekend, the kids rooms are sorted out and our bedroom too. Looks like we have a Nachmieter, one of our neighbours is coming over tomorrow to have a look at the house. I had a mad last minute rush to clean up a bit before they arrive. (no time tomorrow as I have to take the kids to their French lesson)

Lol at the idea of hairy legs and birkies in Geneva. I suspect I will have to get waxing again. I have gotten a bit lazy in the last months, not being particulary hairy anyway.

Do you think that I will be allowed to wear my Crocs?

Funnily enough, I was just at the hairdressers last week so I do have a sleek bob. Have to work on the svelte figure, no Jaffas for me.

That is another thing to put on my list, find a gym in Geneva. I am no use at tennis or badminton. Might try golf though, as DH is into golf at the moment.

I am very of Fink's garden, it sounds lovely.

SSSandy2 · 30/06/2008 12:22

I just don't see you getting away with wearing crocs about town anywhere where they speak French really. Maybe I'm wrong though, haven't been in any francophone places for a long time.

So did anyone watch the football? Actually I chose to watch some rubbish on French tv instead but I occasionally clicked over to ARD to see how the game was doing. I have to say I felt sorry forthe German team afterwards, they looked so glum, didn't they? Tough to make it to the final and then lose.

They looked OLD too, didn't they? Just saw some Spanish footballers jumping around and wrapping flags around themselves and they looked like school boys to me whereas the German team for the most part looked like their dads!

Still they managed to party and set off fireworks all over Ku'damm all last night so good losers in the end. VERY noisy at the Spanish school this morning.

admylin · 30/06/2008 17:28

MmeLindt, how on earth did you get the bedrooms sorted over a weekend? I'm lost amid piles of to-keep, to-throw, to-pass-on junk and can't seem to get the place tidy. I'll be totally ashamed if anyone wants in to look around. Tell me your secret, have you boxed everything then?

Had a semi-success on my shopping trip, got 2 nice tops atleast (even the dc said they were nice!) and found some shoes but not in my size so will look in another place - do you think I can get away with them being too big? Stuff tissue paper down the toes or put soles in? I really want them.

Wasn't it nice and quiet after the football! We got to sleep nicely here in Mitte, poor Germany. This morning the street sweeper truck roared down our street at 6:30am and then a frustrated car driver blew their horn because they couldn't get past, great and I don't have to get up 'til ten to seven! Am looking forward to living on a nice quiet housing estate for a change. Off to Hannover tomorrow, hope it isn't going to be too hot.

MmeLindt · 30/06/2008 21:08

I did sort out the kids rooms in quite quickly, but only because they were gutted about 2 or 3 months ago. My DCs are masters in having the rooms looking like a tip 3 hours after I have tidied everything.

They have been warned now though, anything left lying around in the evening gets put in a big black binbag. I heard the neighbour who will move into our house threaten her DD with that today.

I do suspect that I will have to say goodbye to my crocs. Although I do have the Cleos, they are quite un-Croc-like Crocs.

Admylin
Have fun in Hannover tomorrow. If you have time go and have a Bagel in Bagel Brothers on the Lister Meile. Have a cookie and a brownie too, and think of poor MmeLindt in BagelBrother free Düsseldorf.

I took the DCs to their French course today and spent most of the morning trying to get around DDorf on the tram. I am not made for public transport, I have discovered. I got lost and got on the wrong tram, well on the right tram but in the wrong direction.

Oh, an ad on the TV for the film MammaMia. We saw the musical in Edinburgh a few years ago.

SSSandy2 · 02/07/2008 09:08

Down that plenty of times Mme Lindt (can't quite get used to your new name - bit serious for you, maybe?). Dd thankfully has a good sense of orientation and she seems to remember how to get to places we've only been to once before so she is a big help. When I am on my own, I often take the wrong turning etc and wonder where the heck I am.

How was Hannover admylin. Did everything go well and are you all feeling good about it today? I hope so.

Have a nasty virus atm so feeling bleurgh. Weather is lovely though so should really force myself outdoors I expect.
