How did you get on in Hannover, Admylin.

Ssandy, I am still thinking about another namechange. Maybe I will think of something else.

Stormy here at the moment, I am using the laptop battery rather than the mains cable in case we get hit by lightning.

Did you hear that there was a fire in the trainstation in Ddorf? The DCs and I just missed it. We would have been there at the time but I had to go and pick up DD's new passport (is that a record, 2 days?). When we arrived all the excitement was almost over, still lots of fire engines and police cars. The trains were all delayed.

DH is swearing on the couch next to me. The sat dish does not do storms so we are havign to watch shitty German TV. Rosemunde Pilcher film. (I saw her in Tescos last time I was in Dundee) or RTL "most annoying people" or something.

admylin · 02/07/2008 21:15

Hi

it was hot but we had a nice relaxing day and everything went smoothly and unbelievably friendly people everywhere!
We went to dd's school firts and the secretary was amazing - she knew who we were when we walked in, didn't even have to speak, and she showed us round, we met the headmisstress and she was very good with dd, told her how they were all looking forward to her joining the school and she even said we really mean it so dd felt reassured (but still shy as always) and said that her future class was out on a swimming trip and they were all excited about having a new girl and fed up that they had missed us because of the swimming trip! Then we left and went to ds's Gymnasium where I registered him - they said if too many dc register then they decide through los-verfahren which I find really stupid but we have to worry now for 10 days 'til we hear if he got in or not. If not, he'll be sent across town to a different school so I'm worried abit. However I've just seen on the website that Geschwister and dc who live really close to the school do get preference. All I can do is hope we get good news!

MmeLindt · 03/07/2008 18:20

That does sound encouraging, Admylin. Your DD's school is very welcoming.

Maybe all the friendly people have moved to Hannover since we lived there

taipo · 04/07/2008 07:59

Glad you had such a positive experience in Hannover, Admylin. Hope you get the school you want for ds.

I like the new name MmeLindt - it makes you sound very sophisticated and a bit mysterious. Which Lindt chocolate are you? I like the red Lindor ones with the soft centres. Yum. I think you will have to burn the Crocs before moving to Geneva.

Been to the Freibad 3 times this week as it's been so hot. Unfortunately everyone else had the same idea and it was packed. Still quite a relaxing way to spend the afternoon though and it is one advantage of schools finishing early that you have the whole afternoon to lounge around the pool.

hupa · 04/07/2008 08:11

Glad it went well in Hannover admylin. How did dd feel about the school?

I´m really envious taipo. Lounging round the pool was my idea for this week. It was the start of the kindergarten holidays, but ds managed to catch some sort of virus and was covered from head to toe in a rash and dd developed a fever and was sick for 3 days. They´re both fine today, but it´s raining at the moment, so no pool today either.

taipo · 04/07/2008 08:25

That sounds nasty, hupa. Glad they're better now. It's cool here today so no pool for me either. Just as I was getting used to being a pool bum! Outdoor pools are fantastic here, almost makes up for being so far from the beach.

SSSandy2 · 04/07/2008 09:42

Hi everyone.

Glad they've recovered hupa. It's pouring with rain too and we're at home with a virus so quite glad of it in a way. At least we didn't need to tackle the downpour this morning.

Admylin, I'm so glad everything went so well in the end. That must have been an enormous relief to you. Surely it will work with the Gymnasium. I know they say they do this Losverfahren but I wouldn't be surprised if they don't actually select certain pupils on the basis of their language skills and just use the Losverfahren to fill the places left.

Morning folks!

It's pouring down atleast - it was so hot yesterday I couldn't get any of my jobs done, had such a headache from the heat. Dc didn't manage to get to sleep either. I'm really dreading Houston this summer as I know it'll be like that every day. I just find it's going to be strange flying so far to spend the whole time in the air conditioned buildings.

Hannover has been positive so far - or so it seems, I'm not going to get excited too fast though, am still wondering which film I was in when I went round dd's school! It was amazing and the fact that I can rave about it and really mean it is getting through to dd. There is a difference between trying to convince the dc it'll be great and really meaning it'll be great. They pick up the vibes if you don't really mean it. SSSandy, I think you're right - another friend said the same and the only reason they write strict losverfahren is so that they don't get loads of parents calling up wanting to know why their dc didn't get in. If it's officially by los then they don't have to give a reason.

MmeLindt, have you started packing boxes yet? I should have but the place is in a constant mess, can't quite seem to get on top of the daily jobs to be able to start the extras. If it stays coll like this I might get more done! I'm a true northerner though, I melt when the temp goes over 25! My summer would be fine if it just stayed dry and over 20 degrees!

SSSandy2 · 04/07/2008 10:32

So is dd feeling less apprehensive about it now admylin? Hard to know about Texas, can't really imagine it but you should be able to buy a nice cowboy outfit at least with plenty of rhinestones on it! Bet they are nice to dc there though, courteous service and so on should do you good too, even if it is too hot.

Mme Lindt is another who sounds very organised! Was looking at the Swiss tourist site the other day and the whole area around Lake Geneva looks beautiful Mme Lindt, bet your kids will love it, especially if you and dh have time and energy at the weekends to go off discovering with them.

I think dd is OK - hard to tell at the moment as she isn't opening up, keeping quiet about it. Funny thing is just before we went to her school (we'd just got off the train and taken a taxi) she felt really sick and complained of tummy ache - as soon as we had seen the place and were on our way to ds's school she felt better! She is very anxious and sensetive so I don't think she'll get through it with out a few tummy aches and such like! Still, I think she'll be OK as soon as she's found a couple of friends.

SSSandy2 · 04/07/2008 10:40

the poor thing, it's hard being a mum at times, isn't it?

OP posts:
admylin · 04/07/2008 10:42

I really feel for her and have no idea how I can make her change, except to be there for her and keep reassuring her. I was quite shy as a child (but not half as extreme as dd) so she's probably got it from me - but I grew out of it when I was 9 or 10 so she might too.

SSSandy2 · 04/07/2008 10:50

We're all different admylin and she is the way she is. You wouldn't like her to be hard. I don't think you can toughen someone up who is just not tough. Dd is super sensitive to facial expressions, tone of voice, behaviour of other people so she suffers a lot here in Germany where less sensitive kids wouldn't. She takes every harsh glance to heart and it is hard for me to see too. She crumples if she sees people looking unpleasant or hears someone speak nastily to anyone. It doesn't have to be addressed to her. However she isn't at all shy so she has different problems to your dd.

I take my dd along the creative/artistic path because it suits her sensitivity best and she does well at it. Why don't you try music/choir with dd and/or some kind of artwork hobby once you are in Hannover. Maybe that is more her world?

OP posts:
admylin · 04/07/2008 10:54

I will - she's wanted to try art class for ages now so will look for something. She always has a pencil and book in her hand at home and draws and writes constantly. I have a feeling she might come back from schloss altenburg with a desire to go horse riding!

SSSandy2 · 04/07/2008 11:57

She has been moved around a bit admylin for a shy dc although it couldn't be helped. My sister and I had no problem changing home/school/country a great deal but my younger brother did. I think this move to Hannover sounds quite positive so far, maybe she'll come into her own there if the whole environment suits her better?
