Rightio - let's have an OZ/NZ rollcall for those of us here and moving to, because I can't keep up.

arfishy · 27/02/2008 08:43

I keep seeing 'emigrating to Oz' and 'have left Oz' threads and I can't keep up with who's here and who's coming here and who's gone. And I only see about 4 of us posting too [stern looks all round].

So can we have a roll-call so I can see what's what?

Me - Arfishy. Sydney 3 years, DD - 5, DSS 17, DSS 23.

tilbatilba · 02/03/2008 06:59

I am near Melbourne with 2dds living on the coast.

sherbert · 02/03/2008 10:13

Sherbert here, I am Australian been living in London for 15 years (or there abouts) have two boys. Am moving back to Sydney towards the end of the year. And am sh*t scared.]

Ninedragons? how did you go about buying a place in Sydney, from Asia. Where did you buy? We are thinking about Castlehill.

MrsBigD · 02/03/2008 15:37

Don' be scared sherbert
It'll be alright;)

Where's Caslehill? I'm totally lacking geography knowledge for Aus

vizbizz · 02/03/2008 19:52

sherbert, castle hill is nice. My sister lives near there and it's a good area. Castle hill also has a great mall

superjo · 03/03/2008 04:58

Well, my "hobbies" are what I would like to do if I wasn't following dh and ds's around all weekend for sport, oh yeah, and when I haven't collapsed on the couch inebriated on a Saturday night.
I love quilting - not patchwork mind, but the old English type, and definitely not the yankee stuff. Sadistic self infliction of pain, but it is quiet and it doesn't talk back or need to be fed.
Love sewing too. Just realized all these hobbies are quite antisocial, but have been in quilting groups before we moved. Love coffee & cake too(now honestly, who doesn't)

kiteflying · 03/03/2008 12:15

moved to the Gold Coast three months ago. terribly homesick for London which was my home for the last ten years (originally I am from Melbourne) DD the only native Englishwoman in our family and at six months old is not yet a Aussie citizen but lives here on a visa. excuse lack of punctuation as she is sleeping pn my lap.
would love to hear from other qldlers.

ViolentFemme · 03/03/2008 19:16

Hello, how did I miss this thread?!

ViolentFemme here moving from Scotland to Sydney in June, yay!

DS is 9 months and we want him to grow up an Aussie dude.

We are thinking lower north shore in the first instance (Mosman maybe?) but are very aware that our money will go further in suburbs further out. Any recommendations gratefully received!!

Sibble · 03/03/2008 21:24

I will add Ghosty in Melbourne, alive and kicking we had dinner friday evening. She's lying low and trying to do some work!!

eidsvold · 03/03/2008 21:34

kiteflying - your dd should be entitled to aussie citizenship by descent due to your being an aussie - just apply for it on those grounds.

annobal · 03/03/2008 21:43

Evening all! Have also just discovered this thread.

Been living in London for 13 years and moving back to Adelaide with 4 extras in, oh, 3 weeks & 2 days . I'm also shit scared but very excited.
DS1 (4) starts school in October and we wanted him to go to school in oz.

DS1 4, DS2 3, DS3 8mths.

MrsBigD · 04/03/2008 07:26

annobal... glad I'm not the only one counting the days LOL

9 weeks and 6 days to go here

annobal · 04/03/2008 08:18

LOL MrsBigD - keep thinking I should be doing so much to get organised but there's only so much you can ebay/charity shop/throw before you end up with nothing!

And besides there's way too much left for me to do in London to waste valuable time packing

Does anyone know if I can move pensions (sorry, SUPER) when I get back to oz or do I have to do it before I move?

Shells · 05/03/2008 21:23

And I am here in Wellington, NZ. Just not taking enough notice of threads. NZer, but lived in UK for 18 years, just back last year with DP, DS1 and 2. DD1 born in December (tired).

Aquasea · 16/03/2008 00:14

ViolentFemme - we seem to be living parallel lives! I lived in Glasgow for a while before moving back to London and am now in Sydney with a 9 month old baby son living in Mosman of all places! We moved here at the end of last year. It would be great to chat/catch up with you at some point. Good luck with the move. It's stressful but once we got here we were so thrilled we did it. Our catchphrase at the moment is "living the dream". You will love it.

lulalullabye · 16/03/2008 01:59

Hey, we are here in Melbourne and loving it. 2 wks left and then back to blighty to arrange everything to come back in Sept, Yipee.

Harrogate mum, I am in Roundhay and pop to Harrogate a couple of times a week.

ninedragons · 16/03/2008 03:36

Sorry Sherbet, this dropped off my list of threads I was on.

We bought in Birchgrove, as it's very near my family (despite having been born in Shanghai, DD will be attending the same primary school I did aeons ago). I searched domain.com.au obsessively for months and sent my long-suffering mum off to look at anything I fancied. I was looking in Darlinghurst (a bit red-light, for those who don't know Sydney) for a long time and I think she was so relieved when I finally asked her to check out something in the toddler paradise that is Birchgrove that she may have oversold the flat to me. Still haven't seen it, hope it's as good as it looks in the photos!

ghosty · 16/03/2008 03:43

Hello
I am ghosty and I live in Melbourne. Two DCs - DS (8) and DD (4).
DH - Brit with dual Kiwi nationality.
We were in NZ for 5 year and we are all Brit/kiwis now
Hobbies: Ummmmmmmmmmm ... can 'Drinking Wine' be a hobby?

ninedragons · 16/03/2008 04:16

Yes. Yes it can.

sunnydelight · 17/03/2008 07:23

Hi. I assumed I had already responded to this thread but looks like I haven't!

We've been in Sydney (St. Ives) since June with our three. I LOVE it here, but I keep being stumped by the practicalities like do I really need two different kinds of car insurance for my car as well as a reggo? (whatever that is!).

I'm Irish, DH is half British/half French, the DCs were all born in the UK but have Irish passsports and we're hoping to get citizenship as soon as we can (15 months and counting) so I guess we're the ultimate mongrel family.

buzzybee · 17/03/2008 08:45

arfishy - does meeting up with other MNers count?!

Trying to set up a childcare centre here in Wellington but being beset by bureaucratic hurdles...

Also, looking after 11 week old baby. That's about it!

CarrieMumsnet · 17/03/2008 11:07

So who would like to volunteer to run some antipodean Mumsnet Local sites then? We'd be happy to create some if folks felt up to be Tsarinas. It's a great way to get to know more local mumsnetters (and recruit them) and have an excuse to try out local attractions. Though guess we might have to add beaches to local attractions list ( at why we wouldn't think of doing that in UK despite fact we're a small island... think we have (false?) image of Aussies and Kiwis spending their life of beaches....)

Anyway if anyone's interested in starting a local site for Sydney, Melbourne, Wellington or indeed the outback, just drop a mail to [email protected] and we'll send you some more details

ghosty · 17/03/2008 11:24

Ha, about blimmin time MNtowers! Does that mean we can have some competitions for us down here now?

ozchick · 17/03/2008 19:42

Helloooo all

I am in Brit in Adelaide with DH (native Australian), DD1 2yrs (a Pom like me) and DD2 6 months (Australian like her father). We have been here for 1 year and 8 months. DH loves it. I sort of love it but also find Adelaide a bit dull. You know, kind of quiet and provincial.

Hobbies . . . well, if I had the time I would be a) finishing my novel, b) using my photography degree to actually take something more than family snaps and c) run/walk/yoga/ ie all that stuff I did before children came along. sigh.
