Move to US is an option- am I mad?

We’ve had the opportunity to move to the US with my dh job. Are we mad to consider it?
I feel like we are stuck in a bit of a rut and in the future we will regret not taking more risks. we have 2 (about to be 3) children who would be aged 5,2 and newborn.
pros
great for long term career for dh
experience
change
increase standard of living in terms of salary

cons
young children being away from extended family
limit on my ‘career’ as I couldn’t work as we’d have no family support - I’m honestly not super passionate about work
reliant on husband/husbands job

Are we mad for considering it?

Not sure what exactly are you trying to prove.

Anyway, to the OP, yes, you should move to the US for a few years because it will be a fascinating experience. You no doubt won’t love every single aspect of it, but there will much to remember.

And when you’re done, move back.

As much as Tennessee isn't my cup of tea, if it's only a few years, go for it. People here don't blink an eye at going to the UAE ...

And a suggestion, apropos of nothing: so often Brits come to the US and only go to the cities and maybe a few of the bigger national parks (I might have died a little inside when someone was insulting about the Grand Canyon). Do see the country! The range of landscapes and scenery is truly jaw dropping. I have really learnt how to road trip since we moved here. I am not a very outdoorsy person but my hiking tolerance has improved. There are some parks that are really for the hardcore outdoors enthusiast (a friend posted pictures from a recent trip to North Cascades and it was astounding but the facilities are primitive at best). But most try to be accessible, and they don't just preserve places but cultures like at Mesa Verde.

Absolutely - road tripping is great. Nashville to Austin via New Orleans one of my faves.

Really? I worked there for 15 years until quite recently and myself and most of my colleagues took two week holidays.

I guess there are differences by industry, but you shouldn’t talk about it in absolutes.

Yes, should have said working in Financial services. salespeople were always responsive but I guess the support staff did have longer off work.

but not very often and not for that long!

CarolinaInTheMorning · 20/07/2023 14:45

As for road tripping, yes indeed. I am on vacation now in western New York State, which is a beautiful and often overlooked part of the country. We drove the whole way up from our home in the South and will be driving back, stopping in scenic areas on the way. We also travel with our dog, which is much easier by car.

I don't understand why people argue about our experience with Americans. We are merely sharing our interaction. I work with these people. From an American POV, they think they have high intellect. Fine. Each of their own. They are used to a different levels of intelligence and critical thinking.

People on this thread have provided counterpoints when have been stated erroneously as absolutes. For instance, when someone has written “Americans never do x”, when it’s not true.

That’s what threads are for: airing different ideas and opinions.

some here may ve the urge to justify the choice they ve made. Hence will rule out any differing opinion.

In many places outside the US, americans ve certain stereotypes and stereotypes have some element of truth in them.

I am personally of the opinion that confirmation bias is evidence suggests a deficit of open-mindedness.

Tryingtohelp12 · 26/10/2023 08:18

Haha yes this thread became American bashing which wasn’t what I was asking about. Hadn’t even really occurred to me as there are of course intelligent people everywhere. We decided to hold off with the imminent arrival of our third child but will review next year 😊

Try it for two years, if you hate it come back

Give it a roll. American is a huge place and there is a lot to explore. You might really enjoy it. I see you decided to postpone, but do consider it. Also good for your kids to be exposed to different cultures.
