I see all these threads for Aussie people and thought we should have our own thread too. Not sure why, I just felt the need to make us feel special too!

So, who's stateside and where are you?

I'll start:

Mamama - in Chicago

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 21/11/2007 20:25

happy turkey day, all!

hope you all have Friday off, too.

chocchipcookie · 21/11/2007 22:07

Twirl - it is a madhouse out there on Friday morning but worth doing once for the spectacle? People go with money off coupons for Friday doorbuster bargains.

expatinscotland · 21/11/2007 22:11

i used to work right across the street from Cherry Creek Mall in Denver.

and my best friend and i used to jump to work on Friday.

why?

because no one was there adn invariably the boss would let you go home.

whereupon we would stroll across the street to shop, our cars parked with no hassle at all in the gated access staff car park.

Happy Thanksgiving for tomorrow everyone!

We have 3 friends coming over from England tonight and DH and the DC are going to take them to the Macy's parade tomorrow while I roast the turkey, etc. Unfortunately their 2 flights are 1 and 2 hours delayed so they are going to be late, getting taxis and tired tomorrow morning

OverRated · 22/11/2007 00:07

lol expat

I wanted to go to the Macy's parade too but it's too early and we'll never make it on time. They're forecasting wind and snow so might be more comfortable watching it at home anyway! Hope your friends make it in time, GreatGoogly.

Have a lovely Turkey Day everyone

expatinscotland · 22/11/2007 21:40

Bon courage to all you brave souls headed out to the mall tomorrow!

chocchipcookie · 23/11/2007 01:00

The really brave ones are out there in their tents?

My husband made me put marshmallows on my sweet potato bake. So I did half only and ate the British side.

anorak · 23/11/2007 02:01

Thanksgiving isn't something us Brits normally celebrate. They don't have a public holiday for it here in Bermuda but they do observe it in some families.

Anyway I made a rocky road refrigerator cake and my children are very pleased with me!

Now I have a question for all you Americans. We have cablevision and of course the number of channels is confusing, most of the shows are unfamiliar, so can you guys recommend any good US programmes for me please? We like top quality drama, cops and robbers type stuff and good comedy, as well as real crime stuff.

We seem to watch the crime channel all the time here!

Our favourite US shows we've really enjoyed have been Six Feet Under, Frasier, The Simpsons, Hill St Blues and we always watch all the forensics stuff, we are very sad that way

So, who's been shopping then?

Burgerking for lunch? We had chicken with stuffing, mash, sweet potatoes (& I don't understand the marshmallow thing either but I did eat them) etc and then went to help out at work where we served the same food ,this time with Turkey, (donated by a restaurant so was very yummy & I only had to heat it up, not cook it!) Does tofurkey jerky really exist? Surely not

Re television:

I don't watch it at home (except for my new addiction to desperate housewives , but at work, things I have watched & enjoyed are:
ER
House
Bones
Greys Anatomy
CSI
Moonlight (Vamipre-ish a la Buffy but more focussed on the crime-side - no slaying involved)
Pushing Daisies, which is just odd but slightly funny

Best to avoid Cavemen imo

anorak · 24/11/2007 00:48

Hello all!

Have seen House and CSI in UK. I liked House myself but didn't like CSI as I found the characters unbelievably cold and unemotional, having unrealistic conversations about terrible situation as though they were robots.

Did I judge too much on one episode?

I have trouble getting my DH to watch medical dramas, he has an aversion to them but I might have to put my foot down if that is the only thing worth watching. Will try the other shows you recommend. Many thanks for the pointers.

You forgot to mention The Bachelor

anorak · 24/11/2007 01:46

So which is the best CSI then?

Can you grade them in order of OKness?

atm we are watchin Coupling on BBC America - I can recommend that to you as a brilliant UK comedy well worth watching. It started life as a UK version of Friends but it has a charm all of its own.

OverRated · 24/11/2007 01:53

One of my friends just discovered the British Coupling (which was shamelessly remade and ruined in the US). He then asked if I'd heard of "this Sci-Fi program called Dr Who" I don't think he had any idea that Dr Who is just part of being British - I didn't watch it as a child but all Brits know about Daleks, don't we?

Thank goodness for BBC America. And Netflix... might be worth looking into, Anorak.

anorak · 24/11/2007 01:57

What is netflix?

OverRated · 24/11/2007 02:04

Netflix

An online DVD rental service- you make a list of things you want to watch (they have a really good selection of BBC & other British TV series/ films) and then they send you the DVD at the top of your list. You can keep it as long as you like but have to return it to get something else. You can do anything from 1 DVD at a time to up to 8 (I think). I love it

dooneygirl · 24/11/2007 02:14

We did the shopping thing today, but only bought 1 game for DH. He had to get up early to go to work, and as soon as I shut the door after he left, and was heading back to the bedroom, both DD and DS appeared. I tried to get them to go back to sleep, but neither one would, so we got up and I tried to run them around the local mall to tire them out a bit. Last year was the 1st time we did Black Friday shopping, and other than a few spots, it seemed not as busy.

Anorak, we only watch Ugly Betty and As Time Goes By on British Comedy Saturday nights on our local PBS station. Otherwise the tv isn't on, or we're watching sports. (Ok, probably my biggest secret is I watch Beverly Hills 90210 when DH is at work, because it was popular back when I was in high school, and I wasn't allowed to watch it, so even though I can't say I really like it, I watch it every day faithfully for some reason.) Now you all know my biggest, deepest, darkest secret.

We had a great Thanksgiving. It was hard, because it was the 1st one without DH's mom, so I wasn't looking forward to that, but her best friend was thoughtful enough to call yesterday morning, and that really perked DH up talking to her. The 1st anniversary of her death is coming up next week, and I'm kind of worried about that one, because I don't know how he will handle it. But back to Thanksgiving, we had some of DH's friends with no place to go, or not wanting to travel big distances to get to their families over, and had lots of fun.

Me too. She died of cancer that had spread everywhere in her body, including her brain, and it was very ugly at the end. He lived for 5 months apart from us, as we moved up here to take care of her, and he was supposed to follow 3 weeks later, but his work never transfered him until after she died, and he eventually had to take emergency leave, because she was too bad off for the kids and I to take care of, and she was really scaring the kids with her behavior. He hasn't said much, but he's had both of his grandparents, his favorite aunt, his brother and his mom all die in the past few years.

I made turkey chili tonight, because you never know when he will make it home the day after Thanksgiving since he's in retail, and it heats up really well. I'm going to make this awesome turkey burrito with salsa verde recipe from Cooking Light. It is one of those recipes that is so good it tastes like you'd get it in a restaurant. I'll probably make a really big batch of those and freeze them, because we love them. I don't have that much left over, because DH's friends ate a lot, and we sent some food home with them, because the ones who were here were single, and it gave them dinner for tonight, too. I eat the mashed potatoes for lunch, because I love them, and DH lays claim to the sweet potatoes (I can't stand the marshmallow ones, and buy real sweet potatoes and mix in some butter, evaporated milk, eggs and top with a brown sugar pecan mixture).

anorak · 24/11/2007 02:40

Errr...overrated...don't think netflix will extend to Bermuda, will it? I mean we have to wait weeks for stuff like carrots...

OverRated · 24/11/2007 02:51

dooneygirl. This time of year can be very hard.

I keep forgetting you're in Bermuda, Anorak and that it doesn't count as the US. I think you'll just have to stick with your cable & BBC America
