I see all these threads for Aussie people and thought we should have our own thread too. Not sure why, I just felt the need to make us feel special too!

So, who's stateside and where are you?

I'll start:

Mamama - in Chicago

Hey, anorak, welcome! I remember when the Bermuda thing first came up for you. Nice to see it all worked out. The filter for my dryer is under a little door/flap on top. My washer is front-loading and unless I am missing something it just collects in the rim by the door and I scoop it out. They have dishwasher cleaner by the dishwasher detergent in our market, not sure if Bermuda is the same.

Califrau - that's great news. I was going to start a diet on Monday so will have to buy & eat all the eggs over the weekend.

Can't help with washing machine & dishwasher things as I'm too lowly to have either

Twirl · 17/11/2007 03:52

anorak - we had exactly the same problem with our washing machine in our rented house. We had a technician out who said to (1) set the machine to fill with the maximum amount of water; (2) put in an extra quantity of washing liquid to dissolve the lint (eg 1 1/2 times the normal amount); and (3) reduce the washing time so that less lint is generated (eg we set it 10 rather than 14). This reduced the problem significantly but doesn't entirely eliminate it. I find it also helps to keep all sweaters in a seperate wash. Hope this helps!

Twirl · 17/11/2007 03:54

Almost forgot, technician said that many washing machines don't actually have a filter, we were looking for one that didn't exist! Maybe we have the same machine, what make is yours?

dooneygirl · 17/11/2007 04:25

I have never, ever seen a filter for a dishwasher or washing machine we have owned or been in a place we have rented. I've never had your problem, either.

DH forgot to bring me home the eggs, so I'll have to wait until Monday to taste their wonderfulness. He said they are supposed to be a hot featured item this month, or something like that.

SO glad you had an opportunity to make another list, Overrated.

OverRated · 17/11/2007 04:39

That's a very long wait, dooneygirl!

anorak · 17/11/2007 16:26

Thanks for the list, Overrated. I have DD 15 and DS 7 in case you want it for you records!

Sunchowder and I have been cyber-mates for ages and I do hope a visit one way or the other will be possible while I am here. And of course anyone of you who visits Bermuda has to meet up with me

Thanks for advice re washing machine and dishwasher, washing machine is a Whirlpool Thin Twin washer/dryer. I thought to run it with soda crystals but couldn't find any in the shops. Likewise thought I would run dishwasher cleaner through the dishwasher but none in the shops...the shops in Bermuda are a bit like that though, the whole island runs out of things and you have to wait for the next ship to come in at the moment carrots seem to be in short supply and they don't import them because the island is carrot-fly free and they want to keep it that way.

OverRated · 18/11/2007 03:43

Anorak, I'll add your DC to the list asap! I wish I could visit Bermuda. It sounds like an interesting place to live - I bet it'll take some adjusting. I can't imagine carrots being in short supply

Remember, if you need anything, we can always send something. I know Alipiggie has helped Califrau out during a Malteaser crisis.

Does anyone know if I can cash a check without using my bank account?

dooneygirl · 19/11/2007 03:46

DH wants to know what kind of check, ie: personal, 3rd party, payroll, etc.

OverRated · 19/11/2007 04:39

Personal check - a friend wrote it for me.

dooneygirl · 19/11/2007 04:54

DH was hoping it was a payroll or government check. Many grocery stores around here cash those. He said if you have an Albertsons there, you might try that, because they're pretty good about cashing them. Most stores charge you a small fee, or require you spend a percentage there, though. I just looked up something that said if you have your ID you can take it to the bank that issued it, and they will cash it for you. Other than that, I didn't find much. Sorry, I've always just stuck everything in the bank and gotten money from the ATMs.

Is there a branch of that bank near you? I've just taken it straight to their bank and cashed checks that way.

dodgykeeper · 19/11/2007 17:07

Just been to Walgreens and bought every creme egg they had. All 42 of them. Lady at the till was very bemused! Also got some Terry's choc orange. It says they are made in Poland. Just checked with my mum and the ones she bought in Tesco back home are the same so they should be good. Choc oranges are so Christmas to me.
Need to go and rake leaves now as we seem to be the only house that hasn't done it and we're getting looks.

Thanks for all your help - I don't think we have the bank here so I'll just have to stick it in my account. I was trying to avoid that (long story)

lol @ dodgy's mass egg purchase

Polish chocolate is ok - they make it the same way Brits do. It's always my fallback if I can't get any British Cadbury's. Enjoy those eggs!

anorak · 19/11/2007 20:16

I've tried your suggestions with the extra detergent, Twirl, and it did reduce the problem, thanks. I never realised detergent could dissolve lint. I also found a shop with dishwasher cleaner today so I bought both of the two doses on the shelf!

Just bought some Christmas cards also, they picture Santa sunbathing on a beach with palm trees - thought it would satisfactorily annoy my friends and relatives back in England

Happy Preparing For Thanksgiving Day to all in the US.

I have American hubby so it is the full works.

Now off to bake my pecan pie (wearing my Emma Bridgewater Union Jack apron, though).

Anyone getting up early on Friday? I cannot believe Kohls opens at 4.00am!!!

Ok, this is my first Thanksgiving over here and I have a shopping question. Is the day after thanksgiving a bit like boxing day with all shops having massive sales?

Yes, the day after Thanksgiving is like Boxing day - people queue outside shops for the best bargians and many places open before 6am I intend to be tucked up in bed at that time on Friday though!

I just made pumpkin bars to take for lunch tomorrow. We're having a vicar of Dibley type day- morning playdate (with food), lunch with friends (minus the Turkey ) and then Turkey dinner in the evening at the place I volunteer.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, come and post on this thread

OverRated · 21/11/2007 20:24

I like the apron - I need a more patriotic one - my current one is from Yale!
