Schenk ein den Wein - as autumn comes to Germany and Austria

Der Nebel steigt, es fällt das Laub;
schenk ein den Wein, den holden!
Wir wollen uns den grauen Tag
vergolden, ja vergolden!

A thread for all those living in Germany and Austria, and anyone else who would like to chat.

Always good to have an excuse to open some Wine, and this poem seemed quite appropriate!

Hope all the homework gets done a bit easier this weekend and no more threats of dead birds!!

Good luck to your dd for her op Platanos. Viel Spaß on the camp bed!

admylin · 30/09/2011 12:15

Glad you found all the stuff you needed bavarianlass. Can't even imagine what it'll be like when my 2 have flown the nest but a couple of weeks ago for the first time ever, I had a day dream about being alone with no one to look after and doing what I please! It was quite a nice thought then reality came back to me and no no my babies are never going to leave me!

Hupa, wish not being able to answer a few questions would make my 2 do their homework! Although dd is very good. Ds is so lazy at the moment and and has conned me a couple of times with the tale that he's just going on skpe to ask his friends about some school stuff then I catch him chatting and playing his computer game with them.

Will give those quarkbrötchen a try some time. I like quark, one of my fave German dishes is Pellkartoffeln mit Kräuterquark, perfect veggie food!

Also no no no to handy being used in English. I bet a lot of Germans imagine it's English though! Sounds like you had a tough afternoon linzer. What homework was your dd stuck on? Was it times tables by any chance? We had tears (lots) when they had to learn times tables.

Canella · 30/09/2011 12:16

Oh and I still have a lot of contact with lots of friends in the UK and no-one is saying händy/handy!!!!

silkenladder · 30/09/2011 12:27

Linzer and platanos I read a novel set in India where the characters called their phones "handy" (would the plural be handies?), so I guess there might be British Asians using the term in the UK.

platanos re making your own bed, DH did a rotation on a maternity ward as a student and he said the nurses really resented making beds for women who were just in hospital to have a baby, ie. were basically fit and healthy. It's probably the same thing on the paediatric ward, although if your child was seriously ill you could be forgiven for forgetting to do so.

admylin I am also thinking about winter boots, but since I can't decide what size to buy for dd, I haven't got any yet. A friend already bought her dc's winter boots in April Shock. Dd's feet didn't grow at all for about nine months last year, but have been growing rapidly the last few months, so I don't know whether they will continue to grow or whether they will stick at one size for half a year again Confused.

canella Looking forward to our meet up on Monday. That time is good for us as well, since dd will nap in the car.

hupa that recipe sounds simple. Could add raisins to the dough, do you think? Dd would love making them then.

silkenladder · 30/09/2011 12:33

Blush Just realised I never commented on Later's gorgeous baby pics. Hope you're finding your feet and feeling able to trust your instincts. Basically if you're spending around 23 hours a day either feeding or sleeping then you're doing everything right Wink.

LaterAlligator · 01/10/2011 11:24

Hello all!

James is having a snooze after feeding for what feels like 5 hours (good tip btw, silken - 23 hours a day seems fairly accurate!) so I thought I'd pop on and see what's been going on.

Handy, in English?! No no no no no! Someone tell me it's not true. I still have quite a lot of contact with my UK friends and haven't heard them use it. I wondered if it was one of those words that Germans just presume is used in English.

The cheesecake and Quarkbrötchen recipes sound good, Canella & Hupa. Has anyone tried those Gü cheesecakes? They have them near the yoghurts in Real and they are lovely.

Hello Bavarianlass! I love the idea of living in a village surrounded by mountains, sounds stunning!

Platanos Hope the operation goes well!

Linzer I had to laugh at your DD's threats :o)

Admylin Good luck with the winter boot hunt.

Spoke too soon, die kleine Raupe Nimmersatt has just woken up and started making his hungry face again.

Have a lovely weekend (& BH for those on Germany)

admylin · 01/10/2011 13:00

Later, hope you're getting abit of sleep inbetween feeds. How's it going? I had real problems feeding ds so turned to using formula when he was 3 months old, but dd was great and I breastfed her until she was 2.

Never seen the GÜ cheesecakes but will have a looka s I love cheesecake.

Good luck for the operation platanos, nice that you get to stay right next to her too.

I got boots for dd! Went on the website of a shop we'd been in and they didn't have her size for a pair she liked but the website did so I ordered them! Phew, one down now only one more to go and that's ds but I think I'll do it online for him too. Can't be done with the moaning and long face if he has to go in an actual real shop!

Just been and bought dd her Hallenhockeyschläger. Tha's another ?50 gone. Makes me mad when I buy sport stuff here and I know it's much much cheaper back in UK. Why do they tax that sort of thing so much or what is it that pushes the price up?

LinzerTorte · 01/10/2011 15:42

Well done on getting the boots, admylin. I should probably start looking before everything has sold out, but I just can't think about winter clothes while it's still so hot and sunny. Sports stuff is ridiculously expensive in the sports shops here, but I've managed to get fairly affordable running gear in Lidl, Hofer or Tchibo - obviously that only works if you don't need anything too specialised and they very often don't have anything in any of the three shops when you actually need it.

Later Hope the feeding is going well. I found it a nightmare for the first few weeks (more like a month or more with DD1) but it was great once things had settled down, especially the fact that DD1 would feed for hours on end and so I got through a ridiculous amount of books.

silken Which book did you come across handys [sic] in? (Just interested; not that I don't believe you!) Maybe Asians living in Germany exported the word to India and it was then imported to the UK? I'll have to hear it before I believe it, though!

Canella That recipe sounds great, but unfortunately we can't get crème double here. Do you use Frischkäse for cream cheese? I think we can only get one size tub here (200g IIRC).

Had a nice afternoon yesterday with my English friend, who brought lots of her teaching materials over for me to have a look at and let me photocopy a lot of her lessons plans, which will be really useful. Also had a lovely evening out with two Irish friends until they threw us out of the restaurant as they were closing. (At least it wasn't until 11 pm; last time we got thrown out of the cafe at 9 pm and there was virtually nowhere else to go to - buzzing metropolis it is not!)

OP posts:
5moreminutes · 02/10/2011 13:24

Hello!
Argh not thought about winter boots, got as far as observing that DS1 is about 10cm too tall for last year's snow suit, and baby will need one as he is out of sinc size wise to wear his big brother's, being an April baby where DS1 was September...

This is a long shot, but has anyone taught English to adults using the Key text books from Cornelsen? I taught using Headway last year, just the 2 semesters to complete A1 level, and now have a quandry as apparently the Headway series are going out of print - the VHS prospectus tells students to bring Headway A2 to my course, but I am half hoping nobody has bought the book as if I prepare lessons based on it I can only use my lesson plans and materials once, as from next year we have to switch to a book still in print... but VHS do not have a recommended alternative. I am liking the look of Key as it comes with a teachers book! Has anyone used it? If anyone has, any idea where the "Photocopiables" are, they are refered to in the book and teachers book but I can't locate them and am wondering if they are sold separately or if I am being thick...

Trying to get this done during baby's unpredictable nap and with dd, dd's friend and ds in and out asking for food etc. so a bit frazzled - baby has a cold and is not going down for naps very well atm but I have to prepare something for the day after tomorrow! I can't believe the woman who went out shopping regularly leaving her baby asleep btw (was that Later who wrote about that) - although lots of mums here leave their smaller ones asleep to do the KiGa run, I don't get how they are OK with it! Quite apart from anything else there is the "what if" something happened to the mum whilst out, like a car accident - how long might the baby end up alone then, til the dad got home from work probably, which could be most of a day!

Argh and baby is awake, I was procrastinating one here really wasn't I, and didn't even write proper replies or anything, sorry!

coco19 · 03/10/2011 17:34

Hello - can I join this thread? I've just moved to Vienna with my little 7 week old baby (my DH is working here) - don't know a soul here and am feeling a bit lost! Would be great to chat with some people who know what this is like....

LinzerTorte · 03/10/2011 17:51

Hi coco and welcome to the thread. Smile Have you joined the Vienna Babies Club? I found it a good way of getting to meet people when we moved to Austria; they hold a monthly meeting and there are also mothers' groups (for mothers with the same due dates or with DC born in the same month), which meet more often. The website is also a mine of information about life in Vienna. How do you find living in Austria so far?

Sorry 5more, I'm no help with the textbooks as I have no experience of teaching adults. I feel like I've spent virtually all day preparing tomorrow's two English lessons, and still have only one finished. I still have two to plan for school on Thursday and another one for Friday, although hopefully I can reuse some of the material. I'm hoping it gets less time-consuming as I get more experienced!

tadjennyp · 03/10/2011 22:17

Hello, haven't posted for a while, though I have been reading every day. I think being 8/9 hours behind means I have loads to catch up on then run out of steam to post anything.

The recipes sound great. I think I have seen quark here, but it may have been my imagination!

Good luck with the tonsillectomy platanos. It's amazing how different health systems are, isn't it? Dd was in hospital for a whole 4 hours here, and yours has to stay in for 2 days. Is she much older? I hope it goes really well.

Good luck with all the lesson planning going on. I have only 9 people in my German group, which is quite nice, but the French lessons were cancelled about 6 hours before they were due to start.

The baby hasn't been sleeping too well lately and still feeds a lot. (I think, though as I haven't fed one till 8 months before, I am not sure). However he has got 3 new teeth in the last couple of weeks, making 5 in total.

Waves at all the new people. Hope you have all had lovely evenings!

LinzerTorte · 04/10/2011 05:05

Hi Jenny, nice to see you again. Hope you're not feeling too exhausted; I remember how tiring it can be and wondering whether the DC were ever going to sleep through. Yes, I think feeding a lot is fairly normal at that age as milk is still their main form of nourishment. Hard work when you're still getting up several times a night to feed them, though.

Sorry to hear about your French lessons being cancelled. I stayed up too late last night preparing today's two English lessons, but at least it's finally done. Now trying to decide whether to go out running or shopping after the school run!

Hi Linzer - thanks! I'm enjoying Vienna so far - my DH is Austrian (but from Carinthia, not Wien), so I'm used to coming over here, but I'm looking forward to meeting some people here - I was staying with family in London when I had the baby so was used to having lots of people around, so its suddenly really quiet! Am planning on joining the Vienna Babies Club, but was a bit worried that it was all very experienced mums, and I'm a first timer so finding my feet....I'd also like to do a german course to improve my german (any recommendations anyone?) but not sure how feasible this is with a little one.

Amazingly, baby has settled in his new room really well and I seem to have had a good night's sleep (amazing how a few hours constitutes as a good night's sleep for me these days!) so we're looking forward to exploring the area a bit today as the sun is shining here. Might even brave the tram if I can work out whether I can get a buggy on an off one!

LinzerTorte · 04/10/2011 08:31

Glad to hear you're setting in OK coco; it must help that your DH is Austrian (I tend to hand over anything bureacratic, anything but the most straightforward phone calls, etc. to mine!). I do know how you feel about finding it quiet, though, as we moved to Austria in July when all the baby groups etc. had stopped for the summer.

Re the VBC, I'm sure you don't need to worry - there was quite a mix at the one monthly meeting I went to and the mothers' group I joined was full of first-time mums. I also - more recently - joined one of their book clubs but only went to one meeting; I did enjoy it but decided it was too late in the day for me, esp. with all the travelling involved as we live outside Vienna.

Not sure about German courses (the VHS is generally quite cheap, but so much depends on the teacher), as I studied German - although I used to feel that I needed to start from scratch with Austrian German! I have the feeling that platanos (who also lives in Vienna) may have done a German course so she may be more help.

We should organise a Vienna meet-up now that there are a few of us here. (platanos and I have been meaning to meet up again for a while and Cinders, who posts occasionally on this thread, is just outside Vienna). Not sure how feasible it is for you to come out to Baden with a 7 week old baby, but you'd be very welcome if you'd like to come over for coffee and a chat. Smile

admylin · 04/10/2011 11:41

Hi coco, moving with a 7 week old must be exhausting. I remember being exhausted with ds until he was 3 months old then he started sleeping through.

Linzer, good luck with the lessons. Are the dc enjoying them still? Is there some sort of course book type thing you could use to save you the time?

No help here either 5more, hope you manage to sort your book problems. Are there any other english teachers at VHS who you could ask?

Jenny, shame about your lesson being cancelled. What are your students like? Are they mature students or high schoolers? Do you find they always understand you when you speak English? When I was in Texas alot the time people didn't understand me! Maybe they were foreigners too who had learned English in Texas so a northern English accent just sounded strange! I wa snot able to get a taxi on the phone, they couldn't understand where I wanted to be picked up!

I've done loads of jobs today, even wrapped dd's presents for Friday (birthday) so that's done. Next week is countdown to our holiday so I'll have to start gathering in the stuff we want to pack. Luckily it's meant to get colder so I can pack our summer stuff already - it'll be hot there so we won't need jackets and warm clothes.

LinzerTorte · 04/10/2011 13:07

Your DS was sleeping through at 3 months, admylin? Envy The DDs didn't start sleeping through until they were 13 months (DS was probably about the same age, but his first few years went by in a bit of a blur!), although the first couple of months were definitely the worst. And I preferred the nights where they just woke up once to those when they slept through but were up and ready for the day at 5 am.

The children seemed to enjoy today's lesson, but finding new things to do with them to keep them motivated can be hard work; I did a sort of pass the parcel game with them today (but with a ball and flashcard instead of a parcel), which went down well. I'm going to see if I can find any books to help with lesson planning when we're over in London; there's lots of useful stuff on the Internet, but finding it just eats up time. I've found some really good lesson plans for the KiGa group on one website but a lot of it is too easy for my other two classes, although I can always adapt bits of it I suppose.

This is a ridiculous time of year for birthdays; not that I can really say anything, as it's my birthday next week. DD2 is going to a party on Friday and the DDs have both been invited to parties on Saturday and Monday, plus we're planning on going out for a meal on Sunday for my birthday.

When are you off on holiday, admylin? Is it to visit your DH's family? The next three days here are supposed to be warm and sunny, and then it's going to get cold, wet and snowy (at least in the mountains) as of Friday apparently.

coco The best night's sleep I can remember having was being able to sleep through for five hours when DD1 was a baby. (Now, I would feel like a zombie after five hours' sleep!)

OP posts:
admylin · 04/10/2011 13:52

Yes, 3 months he suddenly started sleeping from about 10pm to 9am!! Didn't last long as dd came along and she didn't sleep through until she was 1 year old! I stopped breastfeeding ds at 3 months as it was so painful and his bottles seemed to fill him up for a good nights sleep. Still feel guilty but atleast it worked with dd and I managed 2 years with her.

I was thinking I might look for some courses aimed at teaching English to young dc when I'm on holiday. Alot of them go to English schools in Dhaka, if they can afford it. I remember seeing some of my nephew's stuff last time and he spoke perfect english. The books were quite old fashioned but obviously did the job!

Poor dd just brought a music short test home where she only got 2 points out of 20. Oops! Trouble is none of us plays an instrument or can read music so I don't understand how to read notes. It was a test with one half she had to draw certain notes and the other part she had to name certain given notes. Now I'm going to have to sit with her and learn them or she'll never get it. Any tips if any of you are musical enough to get reading music??

StickThemWithThePointyEnd · 04/10/2011 14:04

just poking my nose in, feeling homesick for germany..
I posted on this thread for a while in the summer under a different name, not sure if any of you will remember it.

Canella · 04/10/2011 14:25

hello ivysedai - will talk of lebkuchen in the shops already make your homesick worse? you need to organise yourself a wee trip over - that always cures my homesickness!

Welcome coco - respect to you moving with a 7 week old baby. I've only been in Germany for just over 2 years and even in rural bavaria found quite a few courses available. Might be kind of tricky to do with a small baby tho. Think immersing yourself in Austrian life is also a good way to improve your German. Do you speak some already?

Admylin - oh 2 out of 20!! Even if you could read music, that wouldnt help her in the class. But if you google reading music then you'll get the basics - its just from A - H (only to G in the UK) then it starts all over from A again. The note that sits directly under the bottom line is a D then the sits on the bottom line then the F sits between the bottom 2 lines and so on. Hope that helps a bit. Jealous of you and your holiday - need to organise something for us - we've got no trips on the horizon.

Linzer - dc1 and 2 also slept thro most nights at just over 3 months but by that I mean from 10pm until 6 or 7. But that was again because they were bottle fed at that age. It is my biggest regret in life that I was beyond rubbish at breastfeeding Sad. DD lost weight while I BF her!! It doesnt seem to have affected any of them - they are all in robust health but I always feel beyond sad when I read about other people doing it for years.
Have you asked for any nice presents for your birthday Linzer?

I'm no help 5more about your english lessons - sorry. You always sound like life is total chaos - hope the baby feels better soon and you get some rest.

platanos - hope all is going ok in the hospital. Hope the camp bed is tolerable. Do they get jelly and ice cream after a tonsillectomy? i only got given toast after mine - seemed beyond unfair.

so silken and I got our families together for a nice day out yesterday! The weather was lovely which meant that everyone in our local area had decided to go to the same place we went to - it was beyond heaving. But it was still a fun day - silken's dd was quite taken with my dc - think I might offer them out for entertainment purposes. Wink.

well really should go and see whats going on downstairs - think I'm the unofficial kiga for the afternoon!! it'll be a long few hours! think they all need to go outside and enjoy the last of the good weather.

StickThemWithThePointyEnd · 04/10/2011 14:34

thanks Canella unfortunately I won't be able to come over for a while, surprise twin pregnancy, work commitments, money... but will take a trip to lidl when I pick DS1 up from nursery and get some Lebkuchen. (although they give me toothache)

I am sorry I am finding it a bit hard to jump in and catch up with everything, so forgive me for a bit of mememe, I'll try to get a little overview :)

Canella · 04/10/2011 14:42

Just read your other thread - I'm really sorry that I was a bit flippant about it. Blush It sounds like it might be a combination of everything thats making you down at the moment - you've got a lot to contend with.
Have you got German TV? I find watching British TV keeps me a bit sane!
I know you dont know me but I'd be happy to send you some German magazines if you want? A friend does this for me from the UK and it really helps.

coco19 · 04/10/2011 15:29

Hi Linzer - yes, its been a great help that DH is Austrian - we just landed here (literally!) and he had everything set up. Probably best as my german is not great (well its actually Carinthian dialect which I've been told people might not understand here!)....would be great to have a vienna meetup or a coffee sometime and I will be brave and join the Vienna Baby Club I think. Especially if there are also book clubs as I was sad to the one I went to in England. Sounds like you are outside Vienna? How long have you been living here??

And, hi Admylin - the move was a bit exhausting - or crazy - depending how you look at it! But as DH had been over here working since I was about 6m pregnant with us only seeing each other at weekends, we wanted to get back in the same country all together as soon as poss. Hope you have a great holiday...

And there was me thinking 4 hours in the night was a luxury! I dream of sleeping through the night again! Its so funny as before I had the baby I was a total sleep monster and couldn't function without a good long night's sleep. Ah well, maybe in a few months time.

Baby telling me its feeding time........

LinzerTorte · 04/10/2011 15:59

Hi Ivy, sorry to hear you're feeling homesick. Agree with Canella about TV and magazines from home always helping (oh, and chocolate and biscuits!). A lovely MNer has sent me British magazines in the past and it's always cheered me up, even when I'm not feeling particularly homesick. You must have a lot to cope with, with the surprise twin pregnancy - isn't your DC2 still quite young as well (if you are who I think you are)? - and of course being far from home.

Canella Glad the meet-up with silken went well. You (and admylin) really shouldn't feel guilty about not bfing as you obviously gave it your best shot and sometimes it just doesn't work, no matter how hard you try. Btw I bf DS (and the DDs) for nearly 18 months and he still has various allergies, dermatitis, etc. The most allergic/constantly ill child I know is DH's godson, and I wonder whether that has anything to do with him being given cow's milk at six months. I was surprised at the time (would be Shock now), but his mother said it was Demeter (organic) milk when I questioned her. Hmm Am sure that something like that would affect a baby far more than whether he/she is breast or bottle fed.

I was going to ask for an iPhone for my birthday, but in the end settled on a trip away - our visit to London is going to be my birthday present. It would have been nice if we could have gone away for a few days without the DC, but it's difficult leaving DS overnight somewhere due to his allergies. One of my friends did offer to have the DC for two nights if we wanted to go away, but a) she has three under 6s and is a single parents, so I didn't really feel like I could inflict another three on her, and b) they have a cat, and although DS has usually been fine staying there overnight, he reacted quite badly last time so I don't really want to risk it.

admylin I remember when we were being taught to read music at school, we were taught FACE for the notes between the lines and every good boy deserves favour (EGBDF) for the notes on the lines (treble clef - can't remember learning any acronyms for the bass clef). I was also confused by B being called H over here, although B flat is B (just to confuse matters even further).

Second English lesson over - it was quite hard work, with four lively five-year old boys, and it took us nearly an hour to get through everything (actually, only half of what I'd prepared) instead of the half hour that I'd planned thanks to various interruptions (one boy spilling apple juice all over himself, etc.). Still, at least I won't have much to prepare for next week's lesson.

OP posts:
LaterAlligator · 04/10/2011 16:11

Well feeding time is a bit of an adventure at the moment, but he's only 2 1/2 weeks old & has had a mix of breastmilk, expressed breastmilk and formula milk from the start as he was too weak to suckle properly at first, but he's pretty much exclusively BF now with the odd bottle once a day or so - we're getting the hang of it slowly! I generally manage to sleep for an hour or two between feeds, he did sleep for longer when he was having more formula but as far as I can tell that's fairly normal. He has yet to figure out that just headbutting me repeatedly in the nipple isn't necessarily the best way to get a meal, but it's still early days :)

Jenny Sorry to hear about your French lessons. Will they be reinstated at some point? Hope you're managing to get at least some sleep.

5more Sorry, I cant help with the textbook issue. I hope the chaos calms down soon.

Admylin When are you off on holiday? I bet it will be lovely to jet off somewhere hot just as the weather is turning here. Do you have a good relationship with your ILs?

Linzer Good to hear the English lesson went well.

Canella & Silken It sounds like your meet-up was nice! I had a giggle at the thought of you offering out your DC for entertainment :)
