Hi all. Any advice greatly appreciated. My partner in the UK is due to come home to Ireland to me before Christmas. Flight about to be booked to discover passport is missing. His exfriend has his passport the last 2 months and won't return it. He promised to return it for the last week but hasn't shown up. He has now blocked him on everything. What can he do? Is it a crime? After a horrible year of serious illness, it seems I will never get him home. Any advice please

He can report it. Nothing you can do about it

www.gov.uk/report-a-lost-or-stolen-passport

MissingEsme · 19/12/2021 21:08

Thanks. I know he can report it. If its reported as missing then the passport is cancelled and therefore he won't get home for weeks until new one is issued. I suppose what I'm asking is if its a police issue or a crime or if he could be forced to return it.

How did his friend get hold of the passport?

prh47bridge · 19/12/2021 21:11

I doubt the police would want to get involved but the only way to find out for sure is to report it and see what they say.

WeRTheOnesWeHaveBeenWaitingFor · 19/12/2021 21:12

Go around and get it, Bring some big lads with him if he has to.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 19/12/2021 21:14

Theft is theft. Might not get you it back but I definitely report it.

DartmoorChef · 19/12/2021 21:18

This sounds a bit fishy to me. Sorry.

MissingEsme · 19/12/2021 21:19

His friend found him at home 8 weeks ago his body was in septic shock. Friend called ambulance etc. My partner was due to fly home that morning and all his bags and passport etc was in his hallway ready to go. Friend grabbed some clothes and toiletries for him for hospital. Passport must have been amongst the stuff. I have no idea how or why he kept hold of passport. So now they have fallen out, he won't return it. He knows my partner is desperate to get home to me. My partner is lucky to be alive and with no lasting issues is a miracle. This is just so cruel now

Unfortunately it's not fishy at all. It's 100% legit.

Does he know where the friend lives? Can he go round and tell him that if the passport isn't returned within 24 hours he's going to the police

LIZS · 19/12/2021 21:25

Do you need a passport to enter Ireland from UK?

MissingEsme · 19/12/2021 21:27

Thanks for all the replies. He went around to his house for 3 nights in a row and sat outside for a couple of hours each time and he didn't show up. My partner is blocked on everything now and is only getting info from a mutual acquaintance. It's just game playing now.

Yes theft is a crime, he could report it on the non emergency line 111

But does he not know where the ex friend lives? Why can’t he just go round and ask for it?

FabricedeSauveterre · 19/12/2021 21:28

Are you sure your partner is telling you the full story here?

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 19/12/2021 21:29

Will the mutual friend pass on a message about the police? What kind of falling out makes a grown man behave like a child?

orderlyfashion · 19/12/2021 21:29

Your partner could fly to Northern Ireland. You need ID to get there from other parts of UK but not passport. Then he could hire a car snd travel across the border to the republic if he really wants to visit you

VanCleefArpels · 19/12/2021 21:30

Sorry X posted

So the person wasn’t in the house - did your DP actually knock on the door? Has he written a letter saying he will get the police involved if the passport isn’t returned by (deadline)?

Has he reported the theft?

GrandmasCat · 19/12/2021 21:30

If he is sure he has it call the police and tell them he has it and it is not willing to return it.

One thing is to have lost the passport or having a bag stolen with it inside, and a very different one is knowingly withholding the passport of someone against their will.

Gudinne · 19/12/2021 21:31

Can he report his passport as lost or stolen and get a new one?

GrandmasCat · 19/12/2021 21:33

He doesn’t need to write a letter, a text that the police can see will do. You don’t need to give him so much notice or ask him to return it just ask where can you collect it from.

MissingEsme · 19/12/2021 21:34

For the doubters, yes it's the truth and the full story. Passport needed to fly the airport nearest me which is 40 mins away. Belfast is 4 hours drive away. I have no way of picking him up as I work in retail and can't get time off especially now.

OP posts:
Lockdownbear · 19/12/2021 21:36

Sounds fishy, I'm sure you don't need a passport to get in or out of Ireland from the UK. Driving licence, or any other form of Official ID will do, same as an internal flight.

MissingEsme · 19/12/2021 21:40

For those asking the falling out happened because friend told my partner that he was cheating on his girlfriend who my partner had met and said she was a lovely genuine girl. Partner told him it was out of order and he needed to stop or his girlfriend would be told. Friend didn't take it too well and said everyone is cheating now and he needs to realise that this is how the world is.All this when my partner was in hospital.

Ryanair insist on a passport. Other airlines however don't. So if that's what he's telling you it's bull. And what's the problem with Belfast. He could hire a car, or you could pick him up, even if he has to hang around till 1 am for you to pick him up. Or maybe he could get one of those new fangled things called trains.

MissingEsme · 19/12/2021 21:44

For the people saying it's fishy, please don't respond if that's all you have to say. I explained the airport situation. I just wanted to know if its a police matter and if it could possibly be retrieved by them. If he reports it stolen to passport off it will be weeks before a new one is issued. He is still holding on to hope that "friend" will do the right thing.
