Hi all. Any advice greatly appreciated. My partner in the UK is due to come home to Ireland to me before Christmas. Flight about to be booked to discover passport is missing. His exfriend has his passport the last 2 months and won't return it. He promised to return it for the last week but hasn't shown up. He has now blocked him on everything. What can he do? Is it a crime? After a horrible year of serious illness, it seems I will never get him home. Any advice please

Sounds like excuses and he doesn't want to visit you to me, using the "stolen" passport ad an excuse.

Sorry don't know how to tag someone. Thanks Beck01 he is online now checking that out.

You don’t need a passport to travel between Ireland and the UK if he’s a British or Irish citizen

Just book the boat or any airline other than Ryanair (Ryanair need the passport!)

Rather than spend £30 on a train? Hmm

How do you prove you are a British or Irish citizen without your passport?
Loopyloulou007 · 19/12/2021 22:45

Do you need a passport to go to Ireland. Does he have any of these

Most people need a valid passport to enter the Republic or Northern Ireland but there are some exceptions: If you're a UK citizen, you can also use official photo identification. If you're an EU citizen, you can also use a national identity card.

You can travel between the uk and Ireland with photo ID @Shedmistress

Ryanair insist on passports but no other ferries or airlines do

My only photo ID is my passport.
Fupoffyagrasshole · 19/12/2021 22:52

@Shedmistress Ireland is in the common travel area you don’t need a passport to travel between the 2 countries .

I travelled on Wednesday from
London to Dublin with my baby and we weren’t even asked for any ID

my baby doesn’t have a passport yet and they actually accept a birth certificate for a baby..

As Beck01 said, there should be a way to get an emergency travel document once you have reported the passport missing. Hope it works out.

KILNAMATRA · 19/12/2021 23:19

My sons passport was out of date and we flew aer lingus in October no problem to Cork and back

Frazzled2207 · 20/12/2021 07:29

@Shedmistress

You don’t need to prove your nationality to travel between uk and Ireland (unless you’re flying ryanair apparently). It’s the result of the common travel area which is extremely long established

Lobakgo · 20/12/2021 12:51

OP is it an Irish passport or a UK one? If Irish you should be able to report it as stolen and get an emergency travel document which will allow him to travel into Ireland. He wil then need to apply for a new passport there.

This doesn't work if it's a UK passport as the emergency travel document only allows return to the home country.

Lobakgo · 20/12/2021 12:52

(but no comments on whether a passport is even required!)
