Tracking antisemitism 2

continuing on from the last thread which morphed from a discussion about antisemitism to tracking it globally.

I’ve probably missed people out

to start off with something positive - this was a few yeshiva students response to antisemitism ❤️🕎

“Three Jewish college students from NJ were dancing at Denver International Airport. They said they were motivated to do this after the mass shooting in Australia: “We will not be scared or give in to the darkness, we will only add more and more light.” Happy Hanukkah!”

they’re playing my favourite zusha chanuka song, and one of them looks like DHs nephew who lives in America! Had to do a double take and check it wasn’t him!😆

Did you hear about the Jewish MP’s visit to a local school being cancelled at the last minute in Bristol?

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026/jan/12/jewish-mps-visit-to-school-cancelled-after-concerns-raised-by-pro-palestine-group

There is a thread about this in AIBU right now but I just can’t bear to comment and be shouted down. The usual excuse of pupils ‘not feeling safe’ if a Jewish politician visits - because of possible violence by protesters against him. Isn’t this what the police are for?? To protect a serving MP, a school, ffs?

Oh and he apparently deserves it because he dares to have an Israeli husband. Although as we know the goalposts always shift and there is never a right attitude to Israel accepted by these ‘peaceful’ protest groups.

What am I supposed to tell my kids? Don’t ever go into politics? Where the guck am I supposed to send them to secondary school that will be proof against this kind of spineless capitulation? Imagine being a Jewish child at that school and looking forward to your MP visiting and now this….

MP’s visit to school cancelled after opposition from pro-Palestine group

Damien Egan, a Jewish MP and vice-chair of Labour Friends of Israel, had a visit with a local academy called off ‘in case his presence inflames the teachers’

@TheGoldenApplesOfTheSun - couldn't help myself.

in these sorts of threads I'm genuinely curious if there's something like this that I'm just totally oblivious and terrible about because it doesn't actually affect me. The people going on an on about how 'no one' could possibly feel threatened by people wearing keffiyehs and 'no one' could possibly find the marches scary and I'm like 'me!! I'm the person who finds this terrifying!' and maybe there's something else happening to someone else and i just have no idea.

Does that make sense? Cause it's the only reason I keep wading in on this mess - I genuinely feel like on every thread there must be one person who is ignorant, not hateful.

This story is depressing and unsurprising. It's one step from 'cancelling things to protect us' to 'how about everyone just lives in the same neighbourhood to protect you' or 'why don't you wear a special item of clothing so we all know who you are' or whatever other horrors these people are imagining for my kids' future.

TheGoldenApplesOfTheSun · 13/01/2026 15:48

Thanks for wading into the fray - although you shouldn’t have to! Yes, perhaps there is some ignorance in the mix as well as naked prejudice, that’s almost a hopeful thought all things considered. That minds could still be changed.

I am genuinely terrified of secondary school. It shapes a lot of my thinking about where to live in the country, which neighbourhoods, in a way that I don’t think even my closest non Jewish friends really ‘get’. Though am not sure if anywhere is really immune. It feels particularly shite not having a political home on top of all this - I would be Labour by inclination but I don’t see them stepping up enough even for their own MPs now. The cowards!

PurpleThistle7 · 13/01/2026 16:21

Yeah - secondary school has been challenging. My kids are both the only Jewish children in their schools (primary and secondary) and we've had a handful of incidents with my daughter. My son said 'nothing happens that I care about' which I could take a couple different ways but he's happy and has loads of friends and is never worried about going to school so I guess that's fine then.

I am often the first / only Jewish person someone has met here (in Scotland) so people tend to be super curious. So I keep hoping that some of this nonsense is just because no one has ever thought about it before.

ErroltheSwampDragon · 13/01/2026 16:41

So sorry to hear about your children @PurpleThistle7, especially your daughter. I hope she has some good friends who will support her.

Sometimes I have the energy to wade into the AIBUs but it always makes me feel better to see people pushing back.

Keffiyeh's have lost some of their power to me because I keep seeing people wearing them in the most ridiculous circumstances. I saw someone with a keffiyeh handbag on the tube yesterday. So we seem to have gone the full circle from everything is cultural appropriation to cultural appropriation is fashion.

A few of my non-Jewish friends get it (bizarrely all the non-British ones) but its hard to see a friendship the same way when something this big is going on and they treat it like a political football.

On the other hand, I did meet someone who'd never met a Jew before at uni and she asked if that was a kind of Catholic which made me laugh (I'll take innocent ignorance over badly-informed righteousness any day)

Diamond82 · 13/01/2026 23:17

i’m sorry to hear of your school experience @PurpleThistle7
Mine are not old enough yet but I’m dreading choosing a school for this reason. I never told anyone at secondary school that I was Jewish and I’m glad I didn’t. There was always Jewish jokes made, teachers never stopped it. I really hoped society would have moved forward but apparently not.
I did write a very short comment on that thread. I didn’t get any bad comments back and I got lots of likes!
I do get triggered by seeing someone wearing a keffiyeh, it makes me nervous if I’m being honest.
@ErroltheSwampDragon always strange when someone thinks they haven’t met a Jew before. Clearly they have but we don’t have horns to identify us. But I agree, ignorance is a lot better than badly informed and spreading misinformation.

Of course the BBC conveniently didn’t pick this up.

I know and to think I felt sorry for him! I mean on the celebrity version, so many of them had said all sorts of things about Israel and that was clearly fine.

YesHesAPlonker · 16/01/2026 19:13

This might be of interest. The organisation Feminists Against Antisemitism came together after the antisemitism debacle at FILIA in 2025 (cries of "free free palestine" from the main stage at the opening). The fringe meeting organised there, in Brighton, to support Jewish and Israeli women had 250 attendees and a waiting list (I was at the meeting).

They have already run a webinar, and now produced a podcast with Prof Rosa Freedman. They are building a social media presence, so if you are on TwiX please give them a follow. The core group of activists were mainly non Jews, horrified by what was happening at Filia (and beyond) re. lack of support for Jewish and Israeli women post Oct 7th, indeed, outright hostility - they are a mixed bunch now of Jews and Allies.

Anyone heard about the Miss Rachel drama?
Yesterday she liked a comment saying Free America from the Jews. Now she’s been crying on the internet because she’s been called an antisemite. She apparently thought she deleted the comment but she pressed like by accident🤔

She liked a comment from a group known for harassing Jews and claimed she meant to hide it even though the buttons are on opposite sides of the screen. Then another account commented (I think on her fake apology) to suggest the first comment had been planted by the Jews and she wrote "oooooh" back. Not sure which button she'll pretend she meant to press this time.

She may have once really only wanted to advocate for children in Gaza but now she clearly despises Jews. Her hatred only feeds into the cycle hurting children around the world.

And did you see she mentioned she has Jewish family so she can’t be antisemitic?
That seems to be the most common line from the pro Palestinian lot, oh I have Jewish friends/family and they’re fine with what I’m doing, so I can’t be an antisemite.
I am yet to meet a Jew who is fine with this constant social media propaganda, so where are all these Jews? I have had that line used on me recently by a friend I’ve distanced myself from.

Yes, and Jewish friends. Ironically, this always comes from the same people that would have not-so-long-ago laughed at people for saying they couldn't be racist because they had black friends.

I can only hope that when the IRGC falls (hopefully ASAP) and they are no longer funding this extremism, that there will be another cultural flip and all these people will suddenly proclaim they never meant any of it. We, of course, won't forget what it feels like to have our friends support people that hate us.

She’s a peach….

Mothin Ali will be the Green Party candidate in the forthcoming Gorton and Denton byelection. Hoping that someone will shine plenty of light on his very unpleasant track record.

I fear very much that knowing his track record will only make him a more attractive prospect to many voters. 😔

@Namechangeyname You may be right, given the demographic make-up of that constituency, but I still want his record to get plenty of publicity so that no-one who votes for him can say they didn't know what he was like and in the hope that more people will see him for what he really is and cease to swallow unquestioningly the opinions of the 'progressives' 'on the right side of history' and think about who and what they're making common cause with.

stomachamelon · 26/01/2026 19:44

I think there will be more than a few rumblings in the Labour Party over the Andy Burnham fiasco and even more so if that’s who is standing for the greens.

I saw ‘Miss R’s’ own relatives are disowning her now….

I’m glad Miss Rachel’s cousin has spoken out. I’m surprised his video hasn’t had more attention. It’s really great to see this when so many Jews are getting used as ‘the Jewish friends’ in a bid not to have to take accountability.

NasturtiumsAreUnderrated · 27/01/2026 10:22

Apologies. My info about the Green Party candidate in Gorton and Denton was wrong. Not settled yet, but more likely to be someone else.

Diamond82 · 27/01/2026 11:14

Apparently Epstein was actually a spy for you guessed it, Israel.
This podcast is getting quite vile.

The Green Party: predictable. It’s giving ‘all lives matter’. No mention of Jews.

bbc also apparently managed to not mention that the 6 million ‘people’ killed in the holocaust were Jewish, on the radio.

so subtle, subtle enough that you look demented for pointing it out, but a steady trend of quietly erasing Jews in any place where it challenges the dominant victim-oppressor narrative. In this current iteration of antisemitism, Jews just be the oppressors and never the victims.

Anne frank dragged in (yet again), this time by Tim Waltz. “We have got children in Minnesota hiding in their houses, afraid to go outside. Many of us grew up reading that story of Anne Frank," Walz said. "Somebody's going to write that children's story about Minnesota."”

while the world tells the Jews to get out of Israel and go back to Poland, a Polish antisemite (airport worker) tells the Jewish polish citizen to go back to Israel…

I was just reading an article about someone who has been consistently harassed and threatened since becoming the chair of the local Jewish community. Posters up all over town with his name and photo falsely claiming he grooms children.
When his baby was born he received a card sent to his home address addressed to him and his wife, mentioning the baby by name alongside "Free Palestine". Basically an "I know where you live". So that's fun and obviously perfectly fucking normal and acceptable.
