Interesting and concerning article about civil servants being encouraged to influence policy on the current ME conflict. I've also seen articles elsewhere about local council meetings (and equivalent local governance in the US) being put under immense pressure by pro-Palestine activist groups (of no particular faith).

I’m not a religious person but found the whole event very moving especially listening to Hersh’s parents and to the other hostages’ relatives leading prayers at the Kotel

Because Egypt, and for that matter Jordan, doesn’t want thousands of Palestinian to cross the border. If they did then they would have integrated the Palestinians when Gaza was under Egyptian control until 1967.
