Seriously. Is it the same few people just name changing or is it really this toxic in the UK? There is so much poisonous Jewish hatred on here. I'm not talking hatred of Israel, just vile antisemitism on so many posts now.

I truly think I have to step away before I lose faith in humanity. Why does MN seem to attract so many hateful posters? Maybe it's the anonymity.

I can't keep calling it out. Im exhausted and actually deeply disturbed by it now.

I've noticed this about Ireland too, as has DH. We're in Liverpool which has a huge Irish contingent (I have some Irish ancestry myself) and the tensions here are quite high - marches and meetings every weekend.

DH was active in leftie politics for many years, and noted a lot of Anti-Semitism from his Irish (so-called) comrades. He was told to "cough up, Shylock" when it was his turn to buy drinks, for example.

I think that Irish people are rightly attuned to perceived injustices and oppression due to the history of British colonisation, but fail to see the full picture with the Israel/Palestine issue.

Sadly, at least on social media we are extremely outnumbered. The haters can just have their nasty posts up there showing who they really are.
It's hard to tell if we are outnumbered when so many of the posters just keep starting new threads and treating them like a Facebook feed without comment or reflection, as though no one else has access to news sources.

It does seem pointless arguing, since there seems to be a basic inability to grasp more than cheap slogans.

"Perceived" is the key word since perception isn't the same thing as reality.

The fact is that anti-semitism has quite a long history on the island of Ireland, so they're not really posting anything out of the belief they were "oppressed" and are standing with others they perceive as oppressed. Books and academics like Liam Kennedy et al blow up the Irish Nationalist/Republican narrative of an oppressed people. It's laughable several posters still trot out the Famine as genocide rubbish knowing I'll see it and counter it with professional historians. 🤦‍♂️

Nationalism and Republicanism has meant facts that contradict them are buried and ignored. Most of them have no idea the Godfather of the Israel Defense Force was an Irish and British man who was in the British Army. But they'll know about the terrorist network links between PSF/PIRA and Hamas.

It must be recognised that not every Irish person is anti-semitic or anti-Israel, but they are the minority.

There's been one pogrom against Jews on the island and its not located in Northern Ireland, but modern day Republic of Ireland in Limerick.

You'll find the Godfather of the IDF in Belfast, Northern Ireland, BTW. He's buried in Israel.

(There is no doubt the Irish were oppressed by Britain for a very long time by the way. Perhaps the Famine doesn't meet the definition of genocide, no, but you don't actually need to commit genocide to oppress. Maybe have a read up on the penal laws for a start.)

No, I'm not Irish, but Northern Irish. Not the same thing! And I say "they" in relation to the Republic since we're separate countries. 🤷‍♂️

A good place to start with any reading on the Penal Laws is Liam Kennedy's "Unhappy The Land: The Most Oppressed People Ever, the Irish?". Certainly, its nothing at all unique in a comparative European history of the same time period either.

I don't want to derail the thread more than we have already@DownNative. But, please, if you're not Irish, have the courtesy to not give the Irish point of view. Most especially when you misrepresent it so.

Basically everything Israel says is a lie, everything they do is in the hope of killing as many innocent babies and children as possible, Hamas - well, what Hamas? what rockets? and October 7 barely happened now and was mostly done by the IDF.

It’s just the same ten or so posters (plus their alias’s) starting thread after thread, flooding every single thread with misinformation, repeating the same things over and over again; bigoted, exploitative, appropriative and absolutely hateful. Also, boring. I appreciate the valiant efforts of anyone trying to interject with a shred of reason.

They’re so desperate and obsessive. I’m tired of being followed around threads by the same posters trying to pick a fight. hounding Jewish posters, speaking over them and for them. It’s a total mystery why they gravitate time and time again to any thread about or mention of antisemitism, where they might find a higher than normal proportion of Jewish people, only to berate everyone for not talking about Gaza and give their insightful opinions on how antisemitism isn’t really a thing and Oct 7 really wasn’t that bad.

Maybe MN could give them their own board “ISRAEL HATERS R US” and then more reasonable discussions could be had on the Conflict board. There are some really knowledgeable people I’d like to hear more from getting drowned out.

One night there was definitely a teenager posting though. It was like talking to one of the students at work. That actually meant U was able to guide them a bit. They seemed to take into account what I was saying after a few posts. It was hard work though and my cheque from mossad is over due (Joking)

This is the absolute crux of it - there really is no arguing with stupid. It's a shame, because there are so many insightful posters on both 'sides' (I hate that phrase) just patiently sharing their knowledge and countering the crap, and with good grace.
