Mumsnet is getting worse

Seriously. Is it the same few people just name changing or is it really this toxic in the UK? There is so much poisonous Jewish hatred on here. I'm not talking hatred of Israel, just vile antisemitism on so many posts now.

I truly think I have to step away before I lose faith in humanity. Why does MN seem to attract so many hateful posters? Maybe it's the anonymity.

I can't keep calling it out. Im exhausted and actually deeply disturbed by it now.

@Trulywonderful Thank you for your kind comments! It's always good to hear when people find my posts helpful/interesting/etc.

Hopefully it helps cut through a lot of crap.

If anyone has any questions about an aspect of conflicts, welcome to PM me and I'll reply when I can.

PurpleChrayne · 04/11/2023 22:45

@DownNative, I just wanted to say thank you for your excellent posts. Your presence is much appreciated!

SomeCatFromJapan · 05/11/2023 09:38

Just wanted to say how appalled and upset I've been about some of the footage from the marches yesterday, and the awful incident in France.

It is almost impossible now to have any sort of nuanced discussion on most of the threads in the ME conflict section although I do try and correct any obvious inaccuracies.

I find there's a huge double standard where even official evidence is questioned if the source is Israeli, yet any statement from Hamas or insta link is gospel. Any attempt to question the latter is deemed hugely offensive from the same people that were happily to dismiss and minimise the terrorist attacks.

Strength to you all.

I'm afraid that's another tell of a sneaking regarder where official Israel Defence Force statements are ignored whilst Hamas statements are taken as gospel.

In my view, the Met Police are pussyfooting around those marches. One video I saw had the Met barricade themselves in a train station which is absolutely ridiculous. Some of their attempts to snatch certain people out of crowds I would describe as amateurish. The snatch is supposed to be quick, rapid, effective, smooth movement and the perp gone before the crowd can react.

I would say Met Police need to be trained by the British Army on how to do snatches properly. I have little confidence in the ability of the Met Police in various aspects of dealing with these marches.

And now someone whose regard isn't even sneaking, just outright support of and cheerleading for Hamas.

WibbleWobbleFlop · 05/11/2023 12:54

The outright supporters of Hamas are certainly coming out in droves now. At least the poster claimed that he wants the IDF eliminated instead of Israel, but it certainly doesn't make it right, and certainly doesn't stop the poster being a xenophobe.

Stomacharmeleon · 05/11/2023 13:46

Hi all. I wasn't even aware this was here until someone mentioned it on one of the 'other threads'
Hope everyone is as well as can be expected

Has that been reported?

Support for terrorist groups is illegal so Mumsnet would have to take action.

MissConductUS · 05/11/2023 15:19

I just wanted to let you know that I am still here, following the thread and offering my prayers and support for the people of Israel, Jewish people worldwide, and of course, the hostages.

SomeCatFromJapan · 05/11/2023 15:52

@DownNative I tend not to report unless it's a personal attack as I'm in two minds - on the one hand it's emboldening and offensive but on the other hand there's been a lot of gaslighting about some of the worst things that have been said.

Edit - I see it has been deleted now.

Shhhhivegotasecret · 05/11/2023 20:16

Honestly I have been on Mumsnet for 10 yrs + and have always felt a little underlying antisemitism (g-d help any Muslim or Jewish parent that gets their boys circumcised- we are all apparently a bunch of child abusers) but it feels like a total and utter cesspit now. I want to look away but find myself reading threads wondering if this is representative of what people really think in real life

Cropcycle · 05/11/2023 22:09

Shhhhivegotasecret. Same here. I’m wondering how representative MN is of general opinion . Scary thought.
i got involved on the Antisemitism is happening thread. I said I was frightened because I live in a jewish area and look Jewish. They said it was strange that I’m frightened because how would anyone know what religion I am. And how would anyone know I was Jewish from my appearance. I’m not answering questions about my racial characteristics .

When I mentioned that my son was circumcised for medical reasons, but we would have done it anyway because the research shows that it lowers the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases, I was flayed and told that was rubbish. So, I posted links to the studies that prove it, which only infuriated people more.

Beware of contradicting the MN orthodoxy. It never goes well.

petuniasandpetals · 05/11/2023 23:12

@Cropcycle
I was lurking on the thread where you you were asked about your racial characteristics - she obvs doesn't have Jewdar!

Cropcycle · 05/11/2023 23:32

petuniasandpetals. They definitely don’t! In the 80s when Barbra Streisand wore her hair curly, I was always being told I looked like her. Which I did. I literally couldn’t look more like an Ashkenazi Jewish person if I tried .

At least you can produce the screenshot as and when required.

Wonder if I could get funded to do a PhD with the working title of 'The War in the Middle East: A Mumsnet Response, 2023'.

Not sure of a chapter outline yet but early contenders are: 1. Excuse my Ignorance 2. Highway to the Gray Zone 3. More Breaking News from Instagram 4. It's not Antisemitic to Criticize Israel (or I'm Living in Fear of Being Labelled Antisemitic) 5. Why DO people hate you. Conclusion: Be Ashamed of Yourselves

Haha!

I just found out about this group on MN. Can I come in, please? It feels safer here. I'm not Jewish, but am feeling battle-weary and depressed by the relentless spamming, aggression and gaslighting on the "Conflict in the ME" section. Gentle reasoning from the voices I recognise here seems to be drowned out by spamming and mockery. Flowers

It's so horribly, horribly depressing. My only consolation is that the same names keep cropping up and perhaps represent just a handful of moronic bullies. Maybe most people just leave them to it, knowing they'd just be wasting their breath trying to engage. I keep promising myself I'll just let it all wash over me, but then see things that take my breath away with their casual brutality.

It will be an interesting historical record, that's for sure.

PurpleChrayne · 09/11/2023 21:42

Phew, what a relief to find this little corner of sanity and kindness.

Love to you all.

Stomacharmeleon · 09/11/2023 22:44

Welcome (hugs)

Cropcycle · 10/11/2023 00:39

Welcome alcemag. I’ve liked your posts on other threads. I didn’t realise you weren’t Jewish. It’s so depressing and exhausting. It feels as if you point out that Israelis and Jews around the world are being targeted, you are condoning the suffering of the Palestinians. The images coming out of Gaza are horrific. It’s possible to feel their pain as well as be appalled at all that Hamas stands for.

WibbleWobbleFlop · 10/11/2023 08:45

This little section of Mumsnet feels so welcoming and judgement-free. It has seriously helped my mental health the last week!

Welcome Alcemeg
Right at the start of this I decided it wasn't worth trying to counter the ignorant, uneducated and downright hateful views expressed on social media. I have tried before during peaceful times even with just simple fact correction and it ends up as a pile on and I don't have the energy to deal with that stress especially in this situation.

Sadly, at least on social media we are extremely outnumbered. The haters can just have their nasty posts up there showing who they really are.

What is interesting though is that I have always especially seen a lot of antisemitic and anti Israel rhetoric from people in Ireland, including non Jewish members of my own extended family. I looked at some of the Irish online press the other day and it was incredible, like a parallel universe. Very little mention of what started this or the fact that it is a war, let alone a defensive war. No context. Just isolated headlines saying 'Israel has bombed a school in Gaza'. 'Item of Local news' 'Israel has done this'. 'Item of minor domestic news' 'Israeli government minister said Palestinians should go to the desert or Ireland'.

It was mind-blowing and if that's how one sided and irresponsible their media always are, it explains a lot.
