Mumsnet is getting worse

Seriously. Is it the same few people just name changing or is it really this toxic in the UK? There is so much poisonous Jewish hatred on here. I'm not talking hatred of Israel, just vile antisemitism on so many posts now.

I truly think I have to step away before I lose faith in humanity. Why does MN seem to attract so many hateful posters? Maybe it's the anonymity.

I can't keep calling it out. Im exhausted and actually deeply disturbed by it now.

Whatever jingles their bells, I guess.

My non Jewish inlaws seem to have brought my three year old daughter a large collection of Barbies that all look like prostitutes!

(I have nothing against Barbie and brought her a couple of princess ones myself for her birthday)

Merry Christmas everyone ❤️

Have just had a quite flick through and have seen things appear to have ramped up a bit. Targeting posters in particular. Remember to report of things take a personal turn.

Stephen Fry's alternative Christmas message about rising antisemitism in the UK is worth a watch

The fury of twitter when they discover he's Jewish makes his point for him even more clearly.

I am shocked at the deletions today when challenging Instagram posts and non backed up posts. Do you remember the grief we got even recently if something wasn't verified.

etmoiandme · 26/12/2023 17:36

@noblegiraffe Ah yes, they're not happy with him on the other threads either!

cauliflowerwaterfall · 26/12/2023 19:59

My advice having been targeted on MN last year (I deleted my original account because of all of the bullying) is frequent name-changing, I came back with a view to change once-per-week. It makes it much harder for would-be stalkers.

Xenia · 26/12/2023 20:35

Thanks for the Stephen Fry link above.
As I have mentioned above I am Christian (but support Israel). So very very many posts from fake news anti-Israel sites are propagated as truth and repeated again again so that those in the echo chamber of anti-Israel views take them as truth.

I don't know if anyone keeps or even obtains statistics on who is engaged in the massive increase of anti-semitic actions here in London, but it would be worth having that data as we can only properly start trying to root it out if we know who is mostly behind it. 3/4s of it is online "Of the incidents, 31 were attacks on Jewish property. Three-quarters were online, including threats; 35 were at schools and 45 at universities." https://www.theguardian.com/news/2023/oct/20/antisemitic-hate-crimes-in-london-rise-1350-since-israel-hamas-war-met-says

Antisemitic hate crimes in London up 1,350%, Met police say

Israel-Hamas war sees hate crimes increase across UK, with Islamophobic offences in capital rising by 140%

@cauliflowerwaterfall part of me feels like we shouldn't have to do that. I have only name changed once in twenty years.

Trulywonderful · 27/12/2023 14:07

Apparently mumsnet have decided to muck with my account today. Not sure if a person or an automatic IT thing but I have never experience them limiting my posts before. Today I have not even posted much compared to my normal posting history both past and present. So this is interesting!

May have to have a word with head office or something.

noblegiraffe · 27/12/2023 14:20

Rate limiting kicks in if you post repeatedly on a thread in a short space of time, it’s automatic anti-spamming.

OK, perhaps that then. It did occur to me as something automatic. However I swear I have posted way more than that on a single thread at one time. You know me I am very chatty and like my images etc

Anyway better be just that. I mean who would try to stop me posting, I am Truly Wonderful after all 😁

Trulywonderful · 27/12/2023 14:26

Hello Giraffe

Hope you have been enjoying your Christmas celebrations

You know, I thought I'd seen it all the last few months on here but some of the posts the last day or so have been genuinely appalling. I got told yesterday that people are "getting wise" to us now, in relation to Fry specifically calling out the rise of actual recorded antisemitic incidents in this country. I don't think anyone would have dared say that on here even a couple of months ago. Also with a side order of: it's actually just folk calling out genocide, they don't have a problem with Jews, honest guv. Which seems to be the new 'antizionism is not antisemitism'.

I thought if we kept posting actual incidents of antisemitism on the antisemitism threads some of them might take notice and think twice about telling us to basically stop making it up. I mean, they do actually show up to these threads, but it's basically to tell us it's spurious claims or disingenuous, etc etc. No compassion whatsoever, bar one poster. It's really depressing.

The same posters, some of them constantly reinventing themselves with new usernames so they can hide their 10-week trail of bigotry. Yet we have to change our usernames to keep ourselves being followed into a safe space and to basically protect our mental health.

I got this the other night, but it didn't stop the person I was arguing with from posting every 5 seconds.

Maybe it's just a sign to step away from the MN keyboard, since it's not really doing me or anyone else any good. The more strident voices are never going to change their tune, and it's quite possible that most people have just learned to ignore them. The overall effect of these slanging matches is just to make me feel gloomy.

stomachamaleon · 27/12/2023 16:10

@Pizdietz hmmmmmmm

Trulywonderful · 27/12/2023 16:25

The thing is I had not posted much earlier at all compared with the way I have posted on some days

Yes I don't think mumsnet in general, let alone the conflict board is great as a mood booster. I just use it to let off the steam I have bottled up in normal life or to express my thoughts out loud. I can't talk about this stuff at work and I don't want to be talking about it to much with family as I am supposed to be a rock for people or something.

Some friends I can talk about this stuff with but I prefer to not be constantly using our friendships to talk about antisemitism or Israel etc. I just want to have some fun meals out without things getting heavy.

etmoiandme · 27/12/2023 16:27

I assume you're just referring to yourself here and not telling others to step away from the keyboard @Pizdietz?

Even though these links are being ignored by the bigots I still think they should be posted, especially those highlighting antisemitic incidents out in the wild. And posters need challenged - thankfully there's some very clever Jewish (and non-Jewish) MNetters who have been doing so very deftly, better than I ever could anyway.

Yes I agree the more strident voices aren't going to change their tune. And I include some of the more antagonistic, war-hungry pro-Israel posters, some whose posts leave me feeling cold tbqh. Obviously just my opinion. However, it would be a great thing if more moderate voices could find a space in these discussions, like all social media.

etmoiandme · 27/12/2023 16:29

100% same.

Pizdietz · 27/12/2023 16:36

Yes, I'm just talking about myself stepping away. I clearly come across as a strident warmonger myself, and that's also depressing! I'm probably just making things worse.

Also, I live in the middle of nowhere, without any social life, WFH (self-employed), and have no social media profile apart from MN. Letting these angry voices into my head tends to give me the impression that I'm just the most awful person ever, despite what DH tells me!

etmoiandme · 27/12/2023 16:42

@Pizdietz I wasn't actually referring to you - but there are some posters (mostly non-Jewish) whose 'this is war and people must die' rhetoric really gets to me. If someone's starting point is 'Israel is beyond all reproach' then I'm not going to have much in common politically with them, like I don't with hawkish right wingers in general.

etmoiandme · 27/12/2023 16:46

Letting these angry voices into my head tends to give me the impression that I'm just the most awful person ever, despite what DH tells me!

Also worth remembering that some of the antisemites on those boards are truly disgusting and not to let them gaslight you. There will be many lurkers who don't actually post but will see it too - I'm not hearing much of the bigotry (so far) in my daily interactions at work or wherever, so it can feel like a bubble on social media.

Pizdietz · 27/12/2023 16:49

Well, I guess I've come across as a bit gung-ho, talking about percentages killed. I just get so fed up of Israel being accused of a disproportionate response / genocide / carpet bombing / targeting civilians etc, especially as what happened on 7 October seems to be completely glossed over by describing it all in terms of a much lower body count compared with Gaza ("just one baby shot" etc).

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a nice way of arguing with some of the more deeply entrenched bigotry.

etmoiandme · 27/12/2023 17:02

@Pizdietz Oh definitely, and I've seen folk try every tactic. The killing with kindness approach doesn't work either, they're just after a fight with Jewish women and it's as clear as day. I'm also massively struggling with what happened on Oct 7th but I don't post specifically about Israel and Gaza because I just can't get on board with the scale of Israel's response. That probably makes me naive more than anything. Or a hippy wanker. 😂
