Seriously. Is it the same few people just name changing or is it really this toxic in the UK? There is so much poisonous Jewish hatred on here. I'm not talking hatred of Israel, just vile antisemitism on so many posts now.

I truly think I have to step away before I lose faith in humanity. Why does MN seem to attract so many hateful posters? Maybe it's the anonymity.

I can't keep calling it out. Im exhausted and actually deeply disturbed by it now.

This is how I know you get what we are feeling sometimes

Posters trying to fit Jewish people and their feelings about the conflict into a narrative they themselves believe.

Posters trying to put words into our mouths we haven't said and never would think.

I know you get it because I saw how people were with you

I may have disagreed with you on some stuff. However I respected your opinions and informed posts. Others didn't and tried to bring you down to their level.

Posters trying to fit Jewish people and their feelings about the conflict into a narrative they themselves believe.

This is something I’m finding really hard to deal with on here. Stop wheeling out Norman Finkelstein.

I recently came across a post stating;

I live in an area of the UK where there are many Jewish people. I've only really spoken to 4/5 of my Jewish neighbours about this but they all are equally horrified by what is happening. I hate it that people make this about Jewish people. I went to morrocco recently and a Jewish taxi driver there was telling me that he was horrified too.
Jewish people have got nothing to do with this and every Jewish person I have met has always been completely normal and friendly.

How can someone think it’s ok to talk about or for any minority group like this? Completely normal and friendly”? Were you expecting horns and a tail?

And by the way, the Jewish population in Morocco numbers about 2,000, in a population of 38 million. Finding a Jewish taxi driver who conveniently agrees with the opinion on I/P conflict of some random British tourist is nothing less than astonishing, or some might say, totally unbelievable.

(And report away, snoopers! I know how important freedom of speech is to you.)

Humdingerydoo · 04/12/2023 14:15

My son in the car on the way to an event yesterday -

"Mummy, should I take my kippah off in case people scowl at us?" (they've been learning all about synonyms at school! Didn't realise he even knew the word scowl)
"Why would anyone scowl at us??"
"Because some people don't like Jewish people, so they might scowl"

My son is 7 and I can't help but feel I've massively failed him, that he already has this fear about presenting as Jewish. 7 years old and talking about hiding his religion "just in case". I thought I'd been quite subtle taking his kippah off if we go somewhere after school. Apparently not subtle enough.

Generational trauma is real, and I've passed it on to yet another generation, and I truly hate myself for it. Ugh.

Trulywonderful · 04/12/2023 14:22

Oh honey this isn't your fault. You have not failed him in anyway. Unfortunately children will pick up on this stuff in school or society even if we manage to hide it from them when we are around. You can't stay with your child 24/7 unless a baby or you home school. So how are we supposed to block this out so they cannot get affected by it. Don't set yourself an impossible task. You can only try to explain in terms they understand and teach them how to stay as safe as possible.

Cropcycle · 04/12/2023 14:26

It’s not you who have passed it on . Please don’t blame yourself. It’s a damning indictment of the antisemitism that has always been there but that has become increasingly overt since Brexit and the increasing rise of the far right (and far left) throughout Europe and the US, and now at fever pitch with the current hellish situation. My little DGS has also been on the receiving end of hateful antisemitic comments by classmates. It’s tragic.

@Trulywonderful your post at 11.14 we appear to have irritated the same person. I wish they had a headline at the top.... This is an echo chamber. You can only be allowed on here if you reflect the same views.

Actually I was reflecting on this and one of the poster this afternoon. I realised that one of them may react the way they do because they are on the autistic spectrum. I had realised before that their posts can be worded in a particular way. However I had not really thought on it before now. I went and looked at more of their posts on different threads to see the phrasing and wording. I believe I could be right from the way I see some of our SEN write at school. So going to give one of those posters slack. They were not in the hornets nest a few weeks ago and were quitereasonable. Therefore I think they have now been heavily influenced by current media and some of the other users posts.

Anyway lets leave that thread alone for now. It keeps some users busy that most of us prefer are not invading other threads too often. So there is an upside to letting people have an echo chamber.

Do I need to tap the sign that says 'Don't diagnose posters'?

Oh no, I should probably have stayed off MN this morning 🙃 Loads of people who seem be openly very sympathetic towards Hamas and their actions. They don't agree with them but ..... I think I'm going to take another couple of days off from that board. No good will come of staying on it.

I do that periodically - take a few days off.

I'm not even Jewish, I don't know how you guys do it.

DownNative · 05/12/2023 12:55

There's a programme on Netflix called FightWorld. The episode "Israel: Masters Of War" will be of interest to some of you.

It is 40 mins long, introduces you to Krav Maga which originated in Israel and counter-terrorism combat personnel explain their theory of hand to hand combat. Basically, they don't care about your religious background, only about protecting fellow Israeli citizens irrespective of background.

They fight for life, freedom and Never Again. They're not fighting when necessary to kill in the first place.

In the West, we're taught to "run, hide and tell" when there's a terrorist or combat situation.

In Israel, they're taught how to fight in such situations. In the shorter, quickest way possible, I should add.

DownNative · 05/12/2023 14:46

By the end of the episode about Israel, you hear about Budo For Peace which is about bringing kids together from different backgrounds to learn martial arts.

And about each other.

Jewish, Muslim, Christian, etc.

The organisers believe initiatives like that provides the hope and way towards Peace in the future.

It was made in 2018, FYI.

Ahh I think my brother participated in something to do with Budo for Peace a few years ago. He loves his martial arts :)

stomachameleon · 07/12/2023 20:28

Be wary of the 'I have just come here to learn' then backlash when it's not what they want to hear. Then accusations of an echo chamber.

This is a general observation.

etmoiandme · 07/12/2023 20:30

It's the new 'please excuse my ignorance'

Pennina · 07/12/2023 20:50

There's certainly a lot of baiting going on. Lots of angst and heartache over the Gazans that were taken into custody this afternoon. Did they think we'd just say happy channuka and send them off with a donut?!

stomachameleon · 07/12/2023 20:54

@Pennina the competitive emotion......

SomeCatFromJapan · 07/12/2023 21:12

@Pennina it's the automatic, unquestioning assumption that it must be Israel who is lying. Like there's not even a question.

25milesfromhome · 07/12/2023 22:09

It’s getting progressively more unhinged this evening, I almost have whiplash from all the leaps being made.

Pennina · 07/12/2023 22:09

I know - I'm resisting jumping on and kicking off! I just do not know what they expected IDF to do with them? Surely not simply to drive them to the Raffah Gate.

stomachameleon · 07/12/2023 22:21

@25milesfromhome that made me chuckle.....

noblegiraffe · 07/12/2023 22:22

Happy Hanukkah 🕎 if that’s appropriate!

untitledmum · 08/12/2023 11:15

I'm shaken by the antisemitism and Israeli hatred on the middle eastern conflict thread. Every pro-Israel poster who tries to debate is accused of derailing, or promptly deleted.
Do you think that is the outlook of the majority of the British public?

SomeCatFromJapan · 08/12/2023 11:25

No I don't. I think it's the attitude of the same old bunch of loud social media keyboard warriers.

Humdingerydoo · 08/12/2023 11:28

noblegiraffe · 07/12/2023 22:22

Of course it's appropriate - life somehow moves on despite all the devastation. So thank you 😊 My kids are driving me utterly bananas as they know it's Chanukah and are not so good at the whole waiting-til-after-school-for-presents thing.
