Why?

I haven't watched any news yet today because working then had tutorial

You would not know that all of this started with a terrible attack on Israel. Entire focus on condemnation of Israel. Still watching.

DifferentNameForThisBoard · 17/10/2023 22:30

BBC initially reported that it was an Israeli attack. They have now retracted that on their website and are saying that Hamas blames Israel, Israel says it has serious cause to believe it was a failed rocket by Islamic Jihad, Islamic Jihad deny the allegations. BBC are trying to verify what actually happened. No-one knows the truth right now. That doesn’t come through in a lot of their reporting though.

The loss of life in the strike on the hospital is devastating, whoever caused it.

Trulywonderful · 18/10/2023 00:02

We should probably start a thread sometime about the bias of the BBC.

Not on this board about I and P because it would attract non jewto much. Just a thread about some of the issues British Jews have with the coverage of things. Like the 'slur' or that they fail to mention an attack on someone was antisemitism. They report it like it was just a random assault.

Well, well, well! Thank you @Asthebellcurves because for some reason this board made me feel quite soothed tonight. I have also got a few things to say.

First of all thank you to all the non Jews who have had our back this week. Thank you for not leaving us alone to fend it off. So many of you invested hour after hour and every one of you was appreciated.

It might sound dramatic, but these last few years I have had to face up to antisemitism from my so called "tribe", people I had all my life counted on to have the backs of all minorities and it's been fairly depressing.

Someone mentioned up thread how hard it is to see how much they hate us. And mentioned how ‘ordinary’ people just stood by as we were rounded up and annihilated in the Holocaust. Those thoughts have hit me so many times these last few years - I've seen in technicolour exactly how that happened.

So thank you for having our backs.

Thank you also to all the non Jews who spent time this past week reading everything that was written, learning and being open to observe our experience from our viewpoint. As awful as these threads have been, I felt like a lot of people got a window into what antisemitism looks like, and how it so often comes from the last people you'd expect. Thank you for listening!

Also, thank you to the other Jewish Mumsnetters who battled all week against these people. It came to feel like a family to me - and I understand and see clearly why we have a history of sticking together.

I was struck a lot by how many of us know so much about our history and heritage, how much thought we have put into it all, and how deep the connection we feel to that history is. It feels like a kind of beautiful thing.

It's been tiring but educational and also heart warming at times.

Thank you!

Please excuse me for being on your board but this needs to be said.

Late last night I saw footage on Sky TV of the actual hospital attack taken with a camera quite close to the hospital ( one can only speculate why that cameraman was there? )

It was dark and there was no noise of any aircraft.
Suddenly a missile was seen hurtling towards the hospital on a very low trajectory, it was almost parallel to the ground when it struck.

Now, my trigonometry is poor, but this tells me it was fired from not far away either at a low angle or the rocket didn't have sufficient power to elevate itself.

This morning I saw this on Sky which confirms what I suspected;

https://news.sky.com/story/israel-hamas-war-israel-says-it-will-release-evidence-which-it-claims-shows-an-islamic-jihad-rocket-hit-the-gaza-hospital-12986662

I know that apportioning blame does not negate the appalling loss of life, but responsibility for it should be placed where it belongs.

Israel-Hamas war: Israel says it will release evidence which it claims shows an Islamic Jihad rocket hit the Gaza hospital

Palestinian officials have blamed Israel for the explosion, but Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari of the Israel Defence Forces said no Israeli aircraft were operating in the area of the hospital at the time it was hit.

gingergran · 18/10/2023 06:57

There was an Al Jazeera journalist, who are not known to be friends of Israel, who was close to the hospital at the time who also said that the fire in the hospital was caused by a misfired rocket which was launched as part of the rocket attacks on central Israel

I have been trying to find the video that I saw, which was shown on Al Jezeera and Sky last night. but it seems to have been removed.

I wonder why?

VerityUnreasonable. IMO Rollmops are delicious. Chopped herring also 😋 but our deli has stopped selling the brand I love. I remember watching my grandma make it and start by mincing the fish with a hand mincer. She made brilliant chopped herring, chopped liver and gefilte fish balls. Are you a rollmop yay or nay?

Yes, my Grandma was the same! I have never recreated / bought anything that was quite like she made.

I have a mixed relationship with rollmops, I like them but only in small quantities. I mentioned on another thread they are a source of great controversy in my family though because DM will eat a whole tub / jar whereas DSis has banished them from her house never to cross the threshold. It has caused much debate on who is wrong about this. I wonder if I eat a couple but not too many just to try and keep the peace!

I was dismayed last night that Jeremy Bowen felt the need to speculate during his BBC report that the missile that had struck the hospital had considerably more fire power than a Hamas rocket.

Thanks to those that had this board set up.

Hi there

I actually came on to the "site stuff" section to ask a technical question and just saw the thread asking for a Jewish MN section
I was trying to find one last week as I wanted to covey to you that there are genuine people out there who care deeply about antisemitism.
I'm not Jewish myself but have been absolutely blind-sided by the antisemitism in the UK over the previous week- both in real life- had the misfortune to encounter a demo last Saturday, and here on MN
We are with you. The silent majority is with you, I do not doubt it.
I do not want Jewish people to feel scared in this country
I promise I won't duck out of difficult conversations in real life- we need to stand up in whatever small way we can.
I do want to add that a few years ago my partner attended his first Labour CLP meeting for many years post Corbyn defeat, in full expectation that they'd learn from Corbyn's many mistakes.
what happened was heels were dug in and I now see this happens time and again. Our local MP Fabian Hamilton spoke up at this meeting to say that antisemitism on the Left didn't exist. My partner was horrified by his attitude and gave up on Labour altogether that day
I mention it specifically because Hamilton is Jewish; if anyone encounters him and wants to hold his balls to the fire, please do so! He will have thought he was on safe territory there to spout such rubbish.
I'm not good at brevity and I won't intrude further but I'm so glad you have this site section.

Not a problem at all, @LemonyTicket!

You all should keep your heads up, battle antisemitism and continue to live life regardless of what will come. 👍

I'll do what I can.

LemonyTicket · 19/10/2023 22:36

Thanks @DownNative. The Nazis on the right, I can handle. It's the ones on the left who genuinely scare me. They make me actually realise how the Shoah happened. The sheer hate and unhinged behavior is so jarring

Totally agree with this feeling.

I can handle the Kanye's of this world. They are obvious to everyone in time. So less of an issue.

Jez fan club types are manipulative and sly most the time just like himself.

They are just horrible.

I feel like if someone made a video of them acting in these exact same ways towards a black person or gay person or Muslim person they would recoil in horror, but they act like we deserve it.

So many of them come to every thread about Jews in any way shape or form simply to attack and bully. It's so bizarre having that much hate!

Over the last 10 days there's been many MN usernames that will be etched on my mind for a long time - I flinch when I see them now, and I will for quite some time, although I'm sure there will be many name-changers. I know exactly what they are and to say they are prejudiced against Jews is being kind - many of them are outright frothing antisemites who have sadly learned how to play the game to avoid the explicit label. Despite not being a particularly 'Jewish Jew', I can sniff it out a mile away. I've actually found it quite traumatising on here.

On the flip side, there's many posters whose names I will remember positively, and even if I haven't interacted with a lot of them, they haven't gone unnoticed. You're one of them @DownNative. Merci beaucoup Flowers

Trulywonderful · 20/10/2023 09:58

They are starting a conflict topic to put all the threads in. So that should help those people that feel anxious or fed up with constantly dealing with all this

I agree with them doing this for sure. However it does mean most mumsneters won't hear why some media or social media reports are not accurate. So double edged sword like most things.

That's dominated by what is called sneaking regardism.

That's dominated by what is called sneaking regardism.

Not a phrase I remember hearing before. I had to Google it.

"Every democracy has people who are fellow travellers of tyranny, or ‘sneaking regarders’, to use an Irish term which describes people who admire political violence, especially terrorism, but who are too sheepish or full of guile to state their admiration publicly. It’s about time, though, these people are called out for what they are: apologists for what they pretend to abhor."

My introduction to it was long ago via people who made every excuse in the book for PIRA whilst focusing almost exclusively on the State.

The Guardian had their own sneaking regarder in Roy Greenslade. Not too long ago he eventually admitted it and I think he's left Guardian now.

I see the same thing happening with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Its a slippery, goalpost shifting brand of logic.
