Not my space but all the best. I hope @MNHQ is aware of the insidious anti-Semitic posts that have been popping up everywhere this week and can get a handle on their moderation, which frankly has been appalling. Hopefully just ignorance and nothing more sinister.

VerityUnreasonble · 17/10/2023 09:07

Oooh hello! How lovely:) I look forward to a space in which we can argue among ourselves.

What will be the controversial topic here though? Salmon cutlet recipes? Rollmops - delicious or awful?

BIWI · 17/10/2023 09:09

@LargeSquareRock as I said up thread, Mumsnet isn't a pre-moderated site - therefore they only see posts if/when they're reported. So it's not always fair to blame the moderation, because a lot of times no-one reports. (You'll see countless posters saying that they never bother to report, when asked/challenged).

So if you see something dubious - on any grounds - then report!

Sadly when we do report, things are routinely not removed. Mumsnet also use algorithms to identify potential violations independent of moderation reports, as per their submission to a government body a few years ago, and this doesn’t seem to be spurring any action against anti-semitism. I report every instance of anti-semitism I see, but even in the cases they do action a deletion - there is no willingness to go through and check the user’s other posts, even on the same thread.

I would really like to know what training Mumsnet moderators have on anti-semitism and what their application of the IHRA definition looks like, because the things they deem ‘political opinions’ in responses to reports fall under that definition explicitly. While I appreciate Mumsnet as a platform, I think it’s right to speak up at the moderation problems that have become clear with regards to anti-semitism. Otherwise, how will things ever get better?

BIWI · 17/10/2023 09:20

I agree that it can be inconsistent, and frustrating - and sometimes downright wrong!

But the basic principle still stands: if no-one draws attention to posts, MNHQ won't see them.

I wrote both my posts because - notwithstanding the genuine issues you're describing - so many posters seem to think that MNHQ read and check everything posted, which (apart from being impossible, with 30,000+ posts per day!) just doesn't happen.

I'm not sure why you have quoted that at me?

Feel free to check my post history.

I am Jewish. I supported this space and was poking some gentle fun at some of the controversial topics on some of the other boards such as craicnet. Hoping that we might also be able to discuss some lighter topics here, not just the misery that has surrounded us the past couple of weeks.

Riva5784 · 17/10/2023 09:37

I was really hoping the Jewish Mumsnetters board would have latke making tips or charoset recipes or something, not just these threads where we have to see off antisemites and trolls.

rubyslippers · 17/10/2023 09:39

Thank you @Asthebellcurves

sunshinesupermum · 17/10/2023 09:46

Adding my thanks.

This thread is to say thank you to the poster that initiated the board being set up.

Threads about other subjects like recipes can be started up elsewhere.

And as for “poking gentle fun at controversial topics on Craicnet”

The same guideline would apply…

“post but please be respectful”

Enyo2 · 17/10/2023 09:57

Well done for setting up the board.

CloudyAgain · 17/10/2023 09:58

I just cannot bear the antisemitism that is seemingly everywhere on MN. I have to step away as i am just dissolving in tears all the time now and want to go and collect my children and keep them home with me.

Hugs to all my fellow Jewish MNetters and thank you to those who are not but are as horrified and support us. Your words mean alot.

wingslikeeagles · 17/10/2023 12:28

Just checking in to say thanks to @Asthebellcurves but also a big thank you to all those who have shown, and continue to show, such solidarity and empathy with us.

ChickenSoupAndLokshen · 17/10/2023 13:24

I didn't realise this board had been requested but I'm so pleased it has. Thanks to those who made it so. And thanks to the posters who 'get it' and have posted supportive messages.

OVienna · 17/10/2023 14:16

Here to send hugs and support. I have contemplated conversion since my childhood. It waxes and wanes and isn't the topic of this thread so I won't de-rail. But wanted to send my support and I will stand quietly in the background, if that's ok.

I am baffled as to in what way you found my post disrespectful? Or why you felt/feel the need to "moderate".

If you think I was inappropriate please report me.

I said how lovely it was we had the board and commented some things we might talk about.

Bizzare.

I'd enjoy recipe posts too, actually all food posts, and costume posts at purim and a worst Chanukah gift thread.

As on Mumsnet, please believe the anti-semites are in the minority in this country. Although on here with the controversial namechange feature it is easy to believe they are everywhere 💐

Struggling to understand why @VerityUnreasonble saying 'thanks for the board - now we've got somewhere to talk about things like Jewish food' is in any way inappropriate??

Ibizafun · 17/10/2023 17:28

It's come as a shock to me. I thought Jews were understandably watchful (even paranoid) what with our history.. even stopped getting the JC as it only seemed to feature perceived anti semitism.. but there's no denying it now and it really is terrifying.

You could meet someone and be on the same wavelength.. when they find out you're a Jew things change.

I'm not prone to depression but we had my cousin's son for dinner last night who's in intelligence in the IDF (went home today). He told us very reluctantly and after some pressing what Hamas did to those babies at the kibbutz. I've hardly been able to lift my head from my pillow today.

Cropcycle · 17/10/2023 21:27

VerityUnreasonable. IMO Rollmops are delicious. Chopped herring also 😋 but our deli has stopped selling the brand I love. I remember watching my grandma make it and start by mincing the fish with a hand mincer. She made brilliant chopped herring, chopped liver and gefilte fish balls. Are you a rollmop yay or nay?
