Hi ladies, joining this group as we have just started our first ever IVF cycle.
TLDR: ttc 2yrs, age 41, needle phobic, opted not to take down-regs, good luck to all!
Thought I'd share my background and experience so far in case anything helps, and would love to go on this journey with you all. I'm 41 (42 end of Oct) and we've been ttc for over two years. This is our one free shot on the NHS, since they changed the eligibility for our area this year (think it's hideously unfair that it's a postcode lottery though).
We were actually supposed to start in July/Aug but stress levels were soaring high (just moved house) and the overwhelm was unbearable, so we took the pressure off and decided to push it back to actually give ourselves a chance without the cortisol causing through my body!
I have a pretty big phobia of needles (get woozy, faint afterwards, can't watch them on TV) and so starting yesterday was a big deal, but I think the amount of blood tests I've had to have recently prepared me for it a little. My partner was also awesome, he administered the shots (Gonal-F & Menopur 150 IU) and it went pretty well, mostly a burning sensation afterwards. I made sure I had a really nice day planned and got myself zen beforehand. The relief when it was over was great and I don't feel worried about tonight. It actually felt really exciting to be starting this – we've spent so much time being disappointed and/or preparing ourselves for disappointment just in case, with our chances being low. But we're remaining as hopeful yet realistic as we can...
Also, I think it's really worth sharing that I was prescribed Norethisterone, but ended up electing not to take it. I didn't know this was an option at first, and only found out because I pushed my cycle back – when I called on the first day of my cycle to rebook my appointments, the nurse said 'You can just start injecting today.' I was completely unprepared and having realised this, we thought, 'well why don't we just keep trying naturally for one last time before having to go through this', and start injecting if we don't conceive. Which is exactly what we did. I have always reacted badly to any hormonal birth control and it was one of the parts of the process I was really quite anxious about, I also didn't like the thought of putting my cycle on hold, and this option just felt better for me personally. I'd be interested to hear others' experiences.
Wishing you all the very best on your individual journeys and looking forward to hearing your progress :)
