Hello all :-)

I had my nurses consult yesterday. Was very stressful as it turns out my partner was expected to be part of it and we were meant to sign our consent forms together however he was at work. The letter for the appointment only had my name so I didn't realise. He is going to have to leave work and come with me next Wednesday for my baseline scan which is not ideal but can't start treatment until we get it signed. Not the end of the world but was not the added stress I needed. We got our blood tests back and they are fine. Also got his sperm sample back but they would not tell me the results so have to wait until he is off work to chase those up.

For those who are interested I asked them why I am on the short protocol when I have low AMH/AF (it seems most of you are on long?) and the nurse said that the clinic (Kings Fertility) tends to go with short protocol for everyone unless they have had long before and prefer it or specifically request it. She said there is a lot of research and that they don't believe there is much difference between the two and it is easier on the patient to only have to take drugs for 2 weeks. Seems a bit odd that so many clinics go with long protocol if there wasn't an obvious benefit but i wasn't going to argue as I presume they know what they are talking about and it is my first round so will see how things go.

I don't know the dosages yet but I'll be starting Gonal-f on day two, Fyremadel on day 6 (suppressor) and menopur on day 6. Eeep! Still no idea how to inject but they said they would show me next week when i go for the baseline scan. Please keep everything crossed for me that baseline scan is all good and I can start on next cycle around 17th Nov.

I hope you are all well. Following all your journeys eagerly xx

Hi everoyne sorry to intervene

I am going through NHS and We got our eligibility call yesterday and our consultant appt is on 9th November where the treatment plan will be discussed.

How long does it usually take from there?

dragonfly1978 · 04/11/2020 11:54

@Ofpalestsilver thanks! Good luck with the scan, let us know how you get on

ShiMo · 04/11/2020 12:04

@Jane1284, following @BrandyM suggestion, I asked my clinic why I was on long as I thought most people are on short, so the opposite thinking to you haha! They explained to me that due to my endo and adeno, the down regging should help prevent any endo or adeno flare ups which are often brought on by estrogen surges (I know this all from ovulation pain!). Oddly, at my second laparoscopy they couldn’t find any visible endo but it’s possible I have to deep in my bowels etc., so with that and given my history, they have opted for long in my case. Hopefully you feel satisfied with your clinic’s explanation? Sorry to hear your consent appointment was a bit of an ordeal!

Ofpalestsilver · 04/11/2020 12:10

@Jane1284 - oh that's frustrating. Hope you get it sorted out soon. I'm sure you'll manage to get it sorted so try not to stress. Hard as that is to do! My clinic thankfully does all the consent forms online so that's been very helpful.

Jane1284 · 04/11/2020 12:11

@ShiMo ahhhh thanks for that. Good to know the thinking behind long in your case. I feel happy with my clinic so far, apart from the mix-up about the appointment. Hopefully smooth sailing going forward.

How are you feeling so far? x

Jane1284 · 04/11/2020 12:14

@Ofpalestsilver Thank you. Online consent makes sense! This was a zoom call and they said they had to watch me sign it. Even checked my signature versus that on my passport. Funny how everywhere is different in their procedures.

ShiMo · 04/11/2020 12:20

@Jane1284 I’m doing ok thanks, actually itching to start now as it’s been a looong wait! Swear this has been the longest 21 days of my life!

Hope everyone else is doing well. Sounds like some of you ladies are finally making progress and sharing positive news, which is always nice to see 😊

Ofpalestsilver · 04/11/2020 13:03

@Jane1284 - oh, these times really do create some unusual circumstances don't they? Hope you get it soted. It's exciting that you're getting going!

To everyone else, could you please explain short and long protocol to me? (I'm doing IUI so not the same thing but I wanted to share the experience with others in a similarish position) Thanks in advance.

EasterBunny7 · 04/11/2020 14:06

@dragonfly1978

Just reading your update and genuinely feeling excited for you, it all sounds very promising. Grin

With my scan, I had a different nurse who wasn't so forthcoming with details. I think she found me odd for asking so much Wink. She also felt I shouldn't have been given a scan so early on. Sadly, I wasn't given sizes in mm, just told there's a mix of large and small.

I'm gearing myself up to be more assertive in getting that information at my next scan.

I've been feeling very sore and uncomfortable in the abdomen area. Are you having that too?

EasterBunny7 · 04/11/2020 14:15

@Ofpalestsilver

I can tell you from my experience of the short protocol that it begins on day 1 of your cycle (period). You go in for a baseline scan and bloods. Start first injection on day 2. Start second injection on day 6. More scans and bloods every other day starting around day 6. The regular monitoring will dictate when you're ready for egg collection.

From what I know, long protocol starts in your previous cycle where you are asked to down regulate (to control when the next cycle begins).

EasterBunny7 · 04/11/2020 14:22

@Freya2015

Congrats on making it onto the waiting list. It really depends on what the backlog is at your clinic. I got screwed over by lockdown (like many others). I had my consultation appointment at the beginning of lockdown and only started treatment last week.

Freya2015 · 04/11/2020 14:38

@EasterBunny7 thank you for replying. It took 2 Months to get my referral to be done as it was just lying on their desk missing my AMH blood test.

I have very irregular periods so not sure if I would be on Long or short Protocol

MF1981 · 04/11/2020 14:40

@Freya2015 I was the same as @EasterBunny7 and got screwed over by lockdown but my clinic didn’t have a waiting list.

I’m getting really concerned hearing about all these baseline scans - my clinic told me to call them when AF shows up, start injecting on day 2 and then folllow the process as per what @easterbunny7 said. So no baseline scan for me? Is that normal?

MF1981 · 04/11/2020 14:41

@Freya2015 if you have irregular periods then I would imagine you’ll be long protocol so they can manage it better

Freya2015 · 04/11/2020 14:44

@MF1981 how long is the long protocol? and can you start whenever then ?

my clinic said they don't have a waiting list

MF1981 · 04/11/2020 14:48

@Freya2015 I’m not familiar with it I’m afraid as I’m short protocol but I’m sure one of the others will be able to help. Great news that there’s no waiting list!

EasterBunny7 · 04/11/2020 14:59

@MF1981

It's a bit strange they haven't mentioned the baseline scan. Overlooked perhaps? The baseline scan is just to help them see what your 'normal' is and what the starting point is. You need a baseline to chart the progress.

Have you had your information session yet? Or, you could email them your queries.

Jane1284 · 04/11/2020 15:13

@MF1981my baseline scan is next week on day 24 of my cycle to make sure my lining is OK and I have no cysts or other issues in my womb. All looking good I then start injections on day two and go in for my first scan between day 5-8 to check how things are going. Did you have a scan before you started down-reg?

Speaking to my boss this afternoon to tell him about my IVF treatment. Part of me wanted to keep it private but I keep worrying about appointments coming up last minute and it causing issues with work so I figure it makes sense to be open so they can hopefully support me. Eeep.

Freya2015 · 04/11/2020 16:25

@Jane1284
I am struggling to tell my head teacher I dont know when to tell her

Jane1284 · 04/11/2020 16:30

@Freya2015 it's so hard isn't it! I work in a very small company and only one women has ever been pregnant there so there is definitely no precedence for anyone else having IVF. I am hoping he will be supportive and I feel silly for feeling awkward but I just do. I am hoping that he knows someone who has gone through it and has a bit of empathy for me. The problem with IVF is that unless you or someone close to you is affected you don't tend to know anything about it!

Are you planning to tell her soon?

MF1981 · 04/11/2020 16:45

I’m on short protocol so no down regging for me to have been checked before. I had an AFC scan a couple of months or so ago and then I had a mock embryo transfer last week but nobody has mentioned a baseline scan at all. Just that I have to call them on day 1, inject from day 2 and scan on day 5.

I told my boss a few weeks ago and he has been so suppprtive. Plus one of our directors has been through it and wrote a blog on LinkedIn about it so it’s something that’s supported and started to be talked about in our company. He put me in touch with someone else in the same boat as well and it’s been so nice to be able to chat with her.

Birdladybird · 04/11/2020 16:46

@Jane1284 @Freya2015 I’m fortunate that my boss is my DH. Although us having to have time off together will cause some raised eyebrows I’m sure!!

AF arrived last night! I’m never late but this one was 6 days late!! I’ve been taking provames since CD25. I’ve got to see my doctor tomorrow for a scan and then hopefully will start my injections. First time for me so I don’t really know what to expect. Plus I’m in France and the language blows my mind Confused.

Jane1284 · 04/11/2020 16:56

@Birdladybird that works out well. No awkward conversations there!
Happy AF has arrived. Hope your scan goes well and you can start on your injections. Don't envy you the language barrier on top of all the rest!

So I just told my boss and he was very supportive and said to take whatever time I need and not to stress about work. Turns out his brother has had years of IVF and is going through adoption process now. I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

ivfhope3 · 04/11/2020 16:58
