Just seen a ticker on the BBC website saying that

WK, from what I heard at the time (hazy recollection), those tailing him initially weren't armed, they called for back-up. May not be right, but if it is, will explain the delay.

Winter temps in Minas is often warmer than it was in London thurs - and people use heavy coats then.

He was being chased by non uniform people...Would you have sttoped???

hunkermunker · 23/07/2005 21:57

Can those of you posting facts about this please post links to where you're finding them?

Caligula · 23/07/2005 21:58

Oh God help us. Why would a government want to take away our libert?

Because that's the instinct of governments, at the risk of sounding like an anarchist.

Janh · 23/07/2005 21:58

wk, what bothered me was that they would let him get on a bus and then kick off when he headed for the tube. If he never got on a bus then that's not an issue.

I think Sky News might get a bit ahead of themselves with hearsay - the website currently shows:

QueenOfQuotes · 23/07/2005 21:59

"Still want to know more about it before I mourn his passing, I'm afraid."

Well the police have already verified that he had NO connection the the terrorist attacks and that his death was effectively an 'error' - I would have thought that alone would have given 'some' cause for feeling sorry for the poor man.

Sky news have a bit of a reputation for being "first" but not necessarily "accurate" shall we say?

Flossam · 23/07/2005 21:59

I saw a video phone recording of it on tele, and as they were being evacuated there were uniform police there. So they would, IMO have been around during any chase/ before he was shot. Who knows yet anyway, as HM says. And if it isn't the police, who knows if we will ever really know.

Lua · 23/07/2005 22:00

this is where i am getting my facts

\link{http://jbonline.terra.com.br/but is in portuguese}

wobblyknicks · 23/07/2005 22:00

But hm, unless they were absolutely sure he was armed, that seems a pretty poor excuse - even without armed backup they could have asked him (at a distance if needed) to stop.

soapbox · 23/07/2005 22:01

BBC says he was trailed from Tusle Hill to Stockwell train station. Is that far????

QueenOfQuotes · 23/07/2005 22:01

JanH - I think Sky do the same as BBC - when they get the 'latest' information they add it above the 'old' report, and then re-write the whole thing afterwards. So the 'new' facts are there, but it deson't make much sense to read.

HM - BBC, Sky. SABC News (South AFrica) are all saying that a police spokesman have given that as his name.

If the majority of people have that kind of view Caligula, I think maybe we ought to get writing our constitution!!!

wobblyknicks · 23/07/2005 22:02

Janh, agree about it being horrific if they let him get on a bus but even if they didn't they should still have had time to stop him before the station, rather than at it.

snafu · 23/07/2005 22:02

More than far enough to get him to stop before he reached the actual tube, soapbox.

hunkermunker · 23/07/2005 22:02

Nope, QoQ, still want to know more. Why was he in the surveilled house? Why did he run? Why didn't he comply with their orders? Why was he wearing a heavy coat - it wasn't that chilly yesterday.

Yes, all of these things have perfectly legitimate answers. But until they are answered by people who know rather than MNers supposing, what's the point in getting overly emotional about it?

Caligula · 23/07/2005 22:02

Won't argue with you on that one MrsD!

MrsDoolittle · 23/07/2005 22:03

But then I don't think the majority do, Thankfully.

QueenOfQuotes · 23/07/2005 22:03

HM - BBC were first on this on their 'ticker' (but they're always slower than the Sky to actually wrtie the report)

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 23/07/2005 22:03

So we know his name. Big wow. We still don't know lots of the major facts about this.

And yes, all stations (all the ones I've seen) have had uniform police outside since the first bombs.

hunkermunker · 23/07/2005 22:04

QoQ, the BBC like to check their facts and sources

soapbox · 23/07/2005 22:05

Just looked on teh tfl journey planner. It takes 28 minutes by bus from Tulse Hill to Stockwell.

This all sounds so wrong that even I am wondering if there is more to this than meets the eye!

QueenOfQuotes · 23/07/2005 22:05

"Why was he in the surveilled house? Why did he run? Why didn't he comply with their orders? Why was he wearing a heavy coat - it wasn't that chilly yesterday. "

Hmm can't answer most of them (except for perhaps he ran because he was scared). But until last weekend (when I got some money for playing for a funeral) the only jacket I owned was a thick winter one. So if it wasn't warm enough to go wihtout a jacket at all, I was wearing that one!

And last I checked Brazil tends to be quite a bit warmer than the UK, even in winter

SB, of course there is. Which is why I won't enter into debates with people who have read snippets from news websites with sketchy details at best

Lua · 23/07/2005 22:05

TRy again... he is brasilian - it is cold for a brasilian I assure you.
