What do you think?

"Of course it's ok to care about the rights of others...."

and then...

"You know what really pisses me off... hetrosexuals banging on about the rights of homosexuals..."

Caring about rights does mean "banging on about" them.

In fact anyone that actually cares about the law of this country should be concerned about a religious group trying to exempt itself from it.

If the Catholic Church gets away with it then which group will try it next?

SerenityNowAKABleh · 02/02/2010 11:20

"Homosexuality is not accepted within the Catholic church.

If we have to change for the sake of a few homosexuals, you might aswell say religion is dead."
Man, don't say that with Richard Dawkins around, it will make his year.

Surely there's something fundamentally wrong, if a religion is supposed to be based on harmony and understanding, but falls apart and "dies" because it has to accept some different people. It's barking

Pogleswood · 02/02/2010 11:21

Well,I'm not homosexual or catholic,I'm just interested in why people believe what they believe(myself included),but the idea of only caring about human rights when they are directly applicable to you seems a little odd to me.(children down the mines? nah,I'm past 12 now - let them get on with it...)

How do you feel about sex outside marriage, daftpunk? Because surely the problem is celibacy rather than sexual orientation from a religious point of view?

myredcardigan · 02/02/2010 11:21

Hell, why don't I protest about all the money I pay toward state education when I don't use it?

Or maybe the money the country spends supporting disabled people? I'm not disabled. Why the fuck should I care?

I'm white and affluent with healthy kids. Why should I care about anyone else?

Do you see yet?

daftpunk · 02/02/2010 11:21

Myredcardigan;

I'm not a narrow minded bigot....far from it really..

I just happen to be catholic and believe homosexuality is wrong.

mayorquimby · 02/02/2010 11:22

"MQ you are misunderstanding what it means to "belong to a religion"

Because for most adherents it means that the practices, language, symbolism and narrative resonate with them and have meaning for them

It doesn't mean they got a list of 20 Things I Believe and attempted to match this with the best religion"

No I get what it means, and objectively it does mean that there is a list of things which you believe in and which you don't and if the things you believe in are in conflict with that of your chosen religion then it is not logical to say that you are of that religion. If you don't believe in a christian God you can not claim to be a christian, that is self-evident and an extreme example. If however you do believe in god but don't believe in the popes infallibility or transubstanciation then how can one logically claim to be a roman catholic rather than a protestant when to my mind those are the 2 main differences?
However I accept that people are not logical.

TheOldestCat · 02/02/2010 11:23

So only Catholics or gay people are allowed an opinion on this are they daftpunk? Homosexuality is a lifestyle choice?

Good grief.

Strix · 02/02/2010 11:23

Daftpunk,

I am not liberal. I am not an idiot. And I can see this pope for the bigot that he is.

The idea that no one should empathise with people who are different than they are is in fact pretty rediculous. I'm suprised to many posters of crediting your words with a sincere response.

Also, there is much evidence out there to support the notion that being heterosexual or homosexual is in fact not a choice. It would be like saying you chose to be tall, or short, or have two legs instead of four.

Clearly you have never met an Anglican

Rhubarb · 02/02/2010 11:24

I'm a catholic and I despise this pope. He's a bigot. He was a member of the Hitler Youth ffs! And don't give me all that "well he had to" bollocks - aren't holy men meant to be men of substance? That stand up for what they believe in? That are prepared to die for the love of God? He hardly showed himself to be made of mettle then did he? Or perhaps he agreed with the Hitler Youth policies? It would certainly seem so by the crap that comes out of his mouth everytime he opens it.

I'm a catholic in faith only - but in every other sense I cannot stand the way the church has turned a blind eye and even participated in torture, death, discrimination and hatred. It's a religion run by men who are only in love with power.

You get the odd priest who is wonderful. One of them married dh and I and baptised our first, he was fantastic and a man I admired. Another gave dd her first holy communion, an inspirational man who spoke out against many things, a strong man. There are a few of us out there who are fighting back. Who actually love our faith and hate to see it being destroyed by vile and hateful people.

Jesus never judged. He treated women as equally as men. He NEVER spoke out against gays (and there were plenty of them back then too) - Saint Paul did but Saint Paul said a lot of trite about women being below men too - I suppose you devout Pope-lovers would agree with that would you? That a woman should obey her husband and subject herself to him at all times? Oh and don't forget that sex is actually sinful and should only be done for procreational purposes.

My arse that a lot of catholics support him! A lot of catholics would like to see the back of him more like!

BadgersPaws · 02/02/2010 11:24

"You can't help being black....

Homosexuality is a lifestyle choice."

Nonsense.

I bet you, DP, look at a man's bum and get slightly excited.

Gay men look at a man's bum and feel exactly the same that you do.

It's not a choice to be excited by certain sights any more than it is to be excited by certain tastes, smells or sounds.

It's a choice as to whether you act on your natural feels or if you repress them.

That people need to delude themselves that homosexuality is a choice really illustrates quite nicely how it is impossible to differentiate "we don't want you because you're gay" from "we don't want you because you're black".

policywonk · 02/02/2010 11:25

at MP.

TigerFeet · 02/02/2010 11:25

I know a lot of Catholics and the majority of them believe in equality for all

quite happy to be a liberal idiot

Now correct me if I am wrong, Daftpunk, but I seem to remember a thread where you were supporting the BNP... which frankly puts you in the bigot camp. And following your logic, you are the only one who can have an opinion on the pope, seeing s you are both white catholic bigots. Oh, but wait, you are a woman and he a man. So, actually, you are not entitled to have an opinion on him.

Right, so everyone now get off this thread if you buy into Daftpunks (ludicrous) logic.

(I expect everyone will stay)

What mag can I buy to make sure I've got all the accoutrements for my lesbian lifestyle?

weegiemum · 02/02/2010 11:30

DP said
"You know what really pisses me off...

Hey, you know what pisses me off? Heterosexuals who don't care about the rights of homosexuals (or any other minority group). I care about the rights of homosexuals, women (oh no, that doesn't count cos I am one though not a lady!), ehtnic minorities, etc etc etc.

I's a Christian. I might even go so far sometimes to suggest I am an evangelical! But I still care about how people are treated.

Miggsie · 02/02/2010 11:31

Henry II used to get so pissed off by his kingly authority being over ruled by the pope.
But it was Henry VIII who finally decided "the pope has no right to over rule a king of England because the monarch is divinely appointed by God so I report direct to God and not via that twit in Rome" (my paraphrase)

So as the Queen is still head of state, the laws of England/UK are HER laws, she is head of the Church of England, she reports direct to God, so she doesn't have to listen to the pope either.

Although she can invite him to dinner of course. Perhpas she wants some of those lovely embroidered dresses of his

policywonk · 02/02/2010 11:32

I read a copy of Diva once. It was all camping gear and sex toys. Does that help?

policywonk · 02/02/2010 11:33

It is rather sweet of us to be paying for a state visit by some old wanger who's going to use the opportunity to campaign against our government.

morningpaper · 02/02/2010 11:33

I occasionally buy Diva

just so I feel less like a housewife in Somerset

also the naked fat birds make me feel better about myself

Hullygully · 02/02/2010 11:34

He's stark staring mad and a raving wanker tosspot to boot.

morningpaper · 02/02/2010 11:34

Yes it's a bit like inviting the Daleks to tea

Hullygully · 02/02/2010 11:35

And a Nazi youth.

Lovely. Let me kiss his ring.

Miggsie · 02/02/2010 11:35

I feel sorry for the queen really...she had to do dinner for Idi Amin once as well.
