Good on him, but, surely they should wait a bit to see if anything actually comes of this? He's only been in office 9 months.

Am amazed. I love Obama but surely other people deserve the prize more?

HolyBumoley · 09/10/2009 10:19

Eh??? I think the world has gone mad today.

Uriel · 09/10/2009 10:21

For what?!

LadyoftheBathtub · 09/10/2009 10:21

How weird. I'd be a bit embarrassed if I were him. Calling for something is not the same as an achievement.

Maybe peace is a bit thin on the ground atm so it's all they've got...

MmeGoblindt · 09/10/2009 10:23

Huh? Why?

I love Obama, but he has not really done much for world peace yet.

AitchTwoToTangOh · 09/10/2009 10:23

what for? eeeeew, i'm a bit cringing for him... maybe let him settle in and do something before giving it to him?

Bleh · 09/10/2009 10:25

Apparently it's for his calls to reduce nuclear weapons and his plans on negotiating peace in the Middle East.

I think there should be a worldwide ban on Nuclear Weapons. I think there should be peace in the Middle East, I'll work out the details later, and while I'm at it - there should be an end to world hunger.

So where's my prize?

OP posts:
MmeGoblindt · 09/10/2009 10:25

Talk about raising expectations to an unbearable point.

Prunerz · 09/10/2009 10:26

Why people, he has won it for simply ousting the Republicans! Surely that's a huge contribution to world peace, the way Bush was carrying on...?!

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 09/10/2009 10:26

Huh? That's just bizarre. Will be interesting to see what he does with the cash, though.

squeaver · 09/10/2009 10:32

Agree Aitch, it'a a bit cringey isn't it?
Can't believe even the Nobel people have gone all Obama-gooey.

Pyrocanthus · 09/10/2009 10:35

"Very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said in a citation. (Reuters)

What MmeGoblindt says about expectations. It's already practically an impossible job.

AtheneNoctua · 09/10/2009 11:09

Eh? Obama has not given me hope. He's turning my beloved country to Socialism. Terrible stuff.

The Nobel people have obviously lowered their standards.

francaghostohollywood · 09/10/2009 11:16

Lol at turning the US to socialism! If only... by the way...

I agree with Prunerz

mayorquimby · 09/10/2009 11:55

good to see the obama press machine rolls on.
he's done absolutely nothing to deserve this.
but at least the obamabots get to drool over him some more.

smoking2shoes · 09/10/2009 12:05

is it Aprils fools

SomeGuy · 09/10/2009 13:18

Oh FFS, this is Euro-Obama fetishism taken to its extreme.

Let's see how he's judged after a full term.

Utterly ridiculous.

alwayslookingforanswers · 09/10/2009 13:29

well i'ts not some of the other candidates have done anything amazing either - Morgan Tsavangarai - yes not a bad bloke, and he's certainly been put through the mill in Zimbabwe. But being a contender for the Nobel?? Nope - not sure what he's done to do that, he was just as awkward during negotations with Mugabe as Bob himself was at times

mayorquimby · 09/10/2009 13:30

i love the fact that this coincides with the USA bombing THE MOON!!!!!!!!!!!!
this man is an intergallactic war monger, not a beacon of peace.

Blackduck · 09/10/2009 13:37

My God,what a JOKE! and doesn't it just discredit the whole Nobel Peace Prize.....
He has done NOTHING -he has made a few announcements - well bully for him...They have to be kidding

MmeGoblindt · 09/10/2009 13:42

First White House reaction

I think that the Nobel Prize folks have done something very silly and that Obama and his team are probably as perplexed as the rest of the world.

mayorquimby · 09/10/2009 13:53

ah well at least it makes up for his embarressment in chicago the other week.
wlthough can anyone confirm this?i heard that the nominations for the nobel peace prize had to be in 11 days after he was inaugerated? anyone know if this is true?

BoysAreLikeDogs · 09/10/2009 13:53

In his 1895 will, Alfred Nobel stipulated that the peace prize should go "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the formation and spreading of peace congresses."

bronze · 09/10/2009 14:07

I plan to stop all war

Now I've said it will I win next time?

Squishabelle · 09/10/2009 14:11

How can the Nobel Peace Prize ever be taken seriously again. Its been reduced to a joke.
