Story here.

Maybe they should just move?

Sad thing is some numpty somewhere will let them have their day in court. Stupid, just stupid

talbot · 17/06/2009 14:20

Well perhaps not but one could reasonably argue that being prevented from leaving your property once a week for 24 hours is an infringement of human rights.

Mybox · 17/06/2009 14:21

It's a communal area where the rules are decided by the majority so as they are in the minority it's too bad for them. Their views are personal to them & shouldn't be inflicted on others.

morningpaper · 17/06/2009 14:22

No but if it's really REALLY important to your neighbours for religious reasons, who also own part of the house, and are happy to cover all the costs and you are refusing for no good reason at all, then it should come as no huge surprise if they pursue legal action. TBH if it was really important to my neighbours just for PICKY reasons, I'd be a total arse to stamp my foot and object.

Is Halal (or Kosher) meat really more cruel than non-Halal/ Kosher meat?

Once you've crossed the line from eating plants to killing and scoffing animals and their babies, I'd have thought any 'grading' of cruelty was just semantics.

talbot · 17/06/2009 14:28

Well I don't want to start a row about this but it is generally accepted that yes it is as the animals are not stunned first before having their throats slit.

GetOrfMoiLand · 17/06/2009 14:32

Grandad made a good comment, however 'overrides other people's rights' - I don't think that leaving the lights on all day for (approx) 52 days a year is going to infringe other people's rights. Let them keep the lights on, I really don't think it is at all a problem.

Personally not religious at all but I personally would not have a problem with this if I lived in a block of flats and this situation came up.

MrsMerryHenry · 17/06/2009 14:33

Yes, I'm aware that that's the argument, but when I imagine having a bloody great metal rod being shoved into my brain at high speed, no matter whether or not I'm aware of it, it's still an unpleasant thing to do, to say the least.

Poppity · 17/06/2009 14:42

I don't get it, can't they just have a switch instead of the motion sensor? Then whoever wanted the light on could turn it on, and anyone who didn't could leave it off. I must be missing something I guess?

I with talbot though, what a load of guff

Poppity · 17/06/2009 14:45

I'm, not I. Doh!

talbot · 17/06/2009 14:51

Poppity, I'm guessing that's what they used to have and the change to sensors was an effort to use less energy.

I always remember David Attenborough's quote - as a schoolboy sitting in Church listening to his headmaster's sermon, he wondered "how can such an erudite man believe in such guff?"

Poppity · 17/06/2009 15:07

Yes, change is a wonderful thing I guess. What about those ones that turn off after a certain time then?

I heart David Attenborough

FlappyTheBat · 17/06/2009 15:16

When David Attenborough was mentioned, I wondered if there could be a natural solution to this,

I wish I was a glow worm
A glow worm's never glum.
How could you be unhappy,
when the sun shines through your bum?

Glow worms, they have to be the answer, no electricity involved, only sunshine!

GrandadOnagar · 17/06/2009 15:24

Morningpaper this isn't just about the light. This is saying that other people must do what another person's religion requires or they are guilty of discrimination. I could think of endless examples of things they might demand next that would be outrageous, but if you accept this on principle then you must accept all the others too.

Poppity · 17/06/2009 15:24

How fabulous, or perhaps they could harness the fairies a la Shrek?

"£I fear the Jewish culture may not have lasted very long if they spent a whole day every week feeling their way down staircases "

FrontRowFig · 17/06/2009 15:36

regardless of what religion it is people really need to grow up
to belive that you might be bad if you turn a light on on a certian day is just STUPID
and yes you might find thatoffensive but it is.

like ALl religion tbh

FlappyTheBat · 17/06/2009 15:41

I didn't use the quote from somethingjewish.com to criticise them, that is not unless I have changed jobs and sex and have turned into Simon de Bruxelles who wrote the article for the Times.

I thought the " " I had used, might have given it away that this was a quote, which I was merely using to highlight a different perspective from the same faith!

Btw, I've been thinking about the Halal meat thing. It doesn't actually matter how much more cruel it is as long as people have an opinion. If a school uses Halal for all because of a pupil whose religion requires it they are saying that the religion takes precedence over the deeply held opinions/beliefs of everyone else.

The same problem really. A religion (with a well known name) counts for more.

southeastastra · 17/06/2009 15:56

oh just realised she's the head of our local 'religious' high school. still about that.

sassy · 17/06/2009 16:12

Who is going to pay for the extra electricity costs generated by the lights being on all day on Sunday? I guess this would be shared by all the inhabitants of the block - more for some perhaps as they live there, rather than these litigants who have a holiday home there.

I'm pretty tolerant of other peoples' religious beliefs but this is worth of the tosspot IMO.

OlympedeGouges · 17/06/2009 16:13

agree growingup on the lazy journalism.
I think it is unfortunate that religious beliefs take precedence over environmental concerns, but I guess that is the illogical side of all religions. I also feel for the other residents who have to foot the legal bill. However I don't think it was a bad compromise to offer to pay for an override switch and shame that was not accepted.
