Here's one prediction www.predict09.eu/default/en-us/state_analyses.aspx#united

Cheeringly, it reckons that the BNP won't win a seat. Here's hoping.

flaming nora! just listened to explanation of the pr system being used. how complicated!

policywonk · 07/06/2009 21:00

OK, I admit that maybe not everyone who votes for the BNP is a full-on fascist, and maybe it's not constructive to say that they are.

But this is MY thread and I'm letting off steam cos I'm worried they're going to get a seat.

Kitten - I dunno, tbh. There seems to be quite a lot of detail emerging about turnouts and vote-counting so far, so someone is saying quite a lot somewhere!

womble, Martin Wainwright is the Guardian's correspondent at the NW count.

OP posts:
policywonk · 07/06/2009 21:02

Here's what Wainwright is saying now:

'Greens running 2-1 ahead of BNP in two Manchester areas and 3-1 in a third (of four). UKIP people looking happy although it's early days. If they and Greens do well, BNP chances that much tougher'

Have been having the same worry myself this week, hence the badgering encouraging of people to vote.

I was just horrified surprised that people had so little knowledge of the BNP and could be so naive to their 'policies' and it made me wonder if this was how they were getting some of their votes (aside from the full on fascists who quite clearly know what they are voting for )

policywonk · 07/06/2009 21:24

I know what you mean, MIA. But I suspect (maybe because I'm anxious) that for a lot of those people it's a wilful blindness: they don't know the BNP's policies because they've deliberately not looked very far. Let's face it, you don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to find out just how unpleasant they are - the media (including the tabs) has been full of it recently.

Surely those people who end up voting BNP don't really mind that much about voting for a fascist, racist party?

I live in a white working class area; a lot of my school-mum friends are not particularly interested in politics and are instinctively right-wing (not saying the two necessarily go together, but they seem to around here!). They were all horrified when we got BNP leaflets through our letterboxes though.

OP posts:
policywonk · 07/06/2009 21:27

Actually I'll go further: anyone who votes BNP is a racist. It's the one thing everyone knows about the BNP - it's a racist party. It's its fucking USP. BNP voters might be marginalised, disaffected racists casting protest votes, but they're racists all the same.

OP posts:
MIAonline · 07/06/2009 21:36

I feel like we will end up debating the same points in different words as everything you have said I agree with and have already said myself to some extent!

It was just having had these conversations this week I was worried that on top of the knowing racist, fascists there was also people stupid enough to not know and still vote. This made me more anxious as it increase their chance of getting seats.

policywonk · 07/06/2009 21:37

Anyway, that's my little hissy fit.

Results in so far:
Burnley: LDs 5422, Lab 4246, Con 4058, UKIP 3536, BNP 3500, Greens 1021
Pendle: Con 8450, Lab 5272, UKIP 4218, LD 4109, BNP 3610, Green 1540
Hyndburn: Con 6037, Lab 5020, UKIP 3906, BNP 2731, LD 1285, Green 1133

These were BNP target areas

I have no idea what all of this means, I'm just aimlessly spurting statistics

OP posts:
policywonk · 07/06/2009 21:39

MIA, do you really think that someone could vote BNP without knowing it's a racist party? (Not asking this aggressively, genuinely wondering! I don't personally know anyone who has considered voting for them - to my knowledge anyway.)

OP posts:
policywonk · 07/06/2009 21:40

First proper results will be in within an hour, apparently.

I'm supposed to be at the count in Southampton as I've been working on the campaign for the past three months.

However my kids all have measles and I've had one hell of a week.

It's funny because I worked so hard towards this night and now I'd much rather watch the results on telly or MN.

lol - haven't got the foggiest in how that translates apart from raw percentages!

Burnley officially coming in....

Labour - 1
Con - 1
LD - 1

daftpunk · 07/06/2009 21:43

pw;

the BNP got Burnley.....didn't they??

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/06/2009 21:45

Spidermama - first time I've not been at the count for years. Feels very odd but less closeted.

(remembers one count when we didn't declare til 5am and i emerged blinking into the early sun knowing that dd had to leave for school in 3 hours)

Spidermama · 07/06/2009 21:45

Leningrad I would have thought 43% is a decent turnout for the Euros no?

north east region 1 seat each for lab, con, lib dem (no change)

lab 25%
con 20%
Lib Dem 18%
UKIP 15%
BNP 9%
Green 6% (+1),

policywonk · 07/06/2009 21:48

Sorry about your DCs Spider - hope they're not feeling too bad. Shame to miss out on the party - wish I was at one

DP - maybe they got a councillor in Burnley?

OP posts:
MIAonline · 07/06/2009 22:00

PW - I didn't think anyone could not know they were a racist party either until this week. I have spoken to a number of people (Mums) and I hadn't realised how much of a bubble people live in and just how ignorant they can be.

Fortunately they are also the same people who say that all the parties are the same so it is not worth voting so luckily they would not act on it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/06/2009 22:02

How long til next results? This is soooooo slow!!
