Interesting article here
I have noticed that there are more women covering up in the last few years.
Any opinions?

Women get hassled and attacked for wearing overtly Islamic clothing in england.

What's the point you're trying to make? That it's OK to rip off our veils worn by choice by us, because you get hassle from muslim men.
Incidentally in India you'd get hassle for baring skin from men regardless of their faith, moreso if you're white.

The men who give you hassle in england are probably treating the women in their lives horrendously, and you should report it to the police if you're in england, it's not acceptable, you have the right to wear what you want and be happy to walk wherever you so choose.

I'm going ti live in a cave and be a hermit I think might adopt full face veil atthe same time.

incidentally a close friend was reminiscing about a school trip she took to France a long time ago, she remembered how the hotel was surrounded by french boys who knew there were english girls there...they were trying to get laid and under the impression english girls would be easy.....

I have a problem with it but mines a bit different. I hate it when people wear masks/coverings. I understand its my problem though and I'm best not going to disneyland/
No ideas why I don't like it though but it freaks me out. Scream masks at halloween are the worst

I have not read all the thread, so apologies if someone has already answered this, but is there a reason that the nikab seems to appear more in the UK than in predominantly muslim countries?

I did read Gorionine saying that muslim women she knew wanted to wear it as a statement of their faith, perhaps that statement becomes more necessary in a country that seems to them to be hostile or resistant to their religion?

Apologies for any ignorance here, I have little knowledge of these things.

I think it appears that there are more muslim women wearing niqab these days as the countries people are emigrating from has diversified. Like Riven says, Pakistani women don't usually veil and the majority of muslims in Britain in the past were from Pakistan if memory serves me.

bronze · 31/05/2009 17:43

They don't normally in Kosova. In fact most wear skimpier clothes than Iwould (I've been told bya reliable source)

fluffles · 31/05/2009 18:03

i support any woman's right to wear whatever she wishes, however i personally find a veil a barrier to friendship/understanding.

perhaps it's my fault that i am not sophistocated enough to see from a veiled woman's eyes whether she is smiling or scowling at me... particularly as in my experience veiled women also tend to avoid my eye contact.

i'm not sure if they're shunning me or i am shunning them... but we are not forming friendship or understanding and that is sad

HecatesTwopenceworth · 31/05/2009 18:08

If we ban the wearing of them, then how are we any different from those who instruct the wearing of them? We're all telling someone what to wear, based on what? we think we know best?

Better I think, to work on helping women who wear it if that's not what they want.

"I don't think anyone has said that it is prejudiced to say that this happens have they?

Saying that wearing a veil is "dressing like a lampshade" is pretty prejudiced though, or offensive... either way, not nice and not needed."

Thank you Canute, that is precisely what I was trying to say.

Women wearing veils are very noticeable so it may look like there are a lot of them in the UK. But actually there may be lots of Muslim women you pass on the street whom you'd never even know is Muslim if they're like me. I don't wear the veil or even the headscarf (it was not commonplace when I was growing up in my country so did not even think of wearing it) but am traditional in other ways (covered from neck to ankles always, arranged marriage, never had a boyfriend etc.). I know a couple of women who wear the veil and I can assure you that it is completely their choice. Of course there would be women who are forced to wear it, I don't know any but that is not to say it doesn't happen. But some women do choose to wear it and I don't think they should be all lumped as oppressed little doormats. You don't have to be Muslim to be forced into submission by men, it happens in all sorts of environments in this country too.

moondog · 31/05/2009 20:28

I never mentioned veils vis a vis the lampshade remark.
I was referring to the vile drab shapeless full length coats that women wear to step out of the house in places like Eastern Turkey.
Deliberately designed to make someone look as un attractive as possible. How is that Godly to render ugly somethnig as unique and wonderful as the human body?

Many wear gloves and thick socks too.
Not the men of course-too busy strutting around in tight jeans.

I don't waer skin tight clothes and expose acres of flesh either but i am proud of what God gave me, do my best to keep it looking as nice as it can look and try to wear clothes to flatter it.

I'm jsut a bit lost wondering how that suddenly became such a wantonly Godless and shameless thing to do.
(And i would cite many barking Christian sects who also believe the smae.)

moondog · 31/05/2009 20:37

And no Muslim has ever adequately answered my question which is why do men not do the same.

Because male and female modesty is defined differently in almost every culture. In the UK your husband/father/son can go to your swimming pool with only a pair of swimming shorts but you can't do that can you? Do you insist that they cover their tops too or do you insist on going topless to show that you're not taking such oppressive rubbish?

moondog · 31/05/2009 20:45

So why aren't blokes wearing long housecoats, scarves, gloves and thick socks under snadals then?

moondog · 31/05/2009 20:45

So explain the hair and face thing Pixel and not just the tit thing.

I can go with the covering up of the tits, no problem with that.

megapixels · 31/05/2009 20:48

And Islam does enforce a dress requirement on men too. They have to be covered from navel to knee. Less than the requirement for women, but that's nothing unusual is it?

megapixels · 31/05/2009 20:50

Well me too, but why nit-pick on some things and not on others?
