Honestly Michelle Obama is such a goddess.
I wonder what the queen was thinking - ie was she gritting her teeth and thinking 'Must- not -flinch .... must - not - jeopardize Special Relationship' or if she was all 'OOooh Michelle Obama hugged me!'

She was probably thinking the former!

HuwEdwards · 02/04/2009 10:55

'kin 'ell, the Obamas look like they're visiting Lilliput

mynameis · 02/04/2009 10:56

Bless. How diddy is the Queen?? wow never realised

gizmo · 02/04/2009 10:56

I loved the shot from behind the BBC ran yesterday. For once her Maj seemed at a bit of a loss: she did the natural thing and put her arm around Michelle's waist and then it all went a bit...hesitant... and kind of slid off.

donnie · 02/04/2009 10:56

aaww....good for them! all that protocol is a load of old cobblers anyway. I expect the Queen is a bit of a racy old devil underneath it all.

donnie · 02/04/2009 10:57

wonder what Prince Philip would have done?

DanJARMouse · 02/04/2009 10:59

I thought it was really sweet. Shows in my eyes a different side to the stoney faced queen we usually see and also that Michelle Obama is very obviously a hands on kinda girl and is not ashamed to show affection.

Nancy66 · 02/04/2009 11:02

When you see the footage on TV the Queen looks very relaxed and quite protective towards Michelle - it's actually really sweet.

I think she gets hacked off when pervy old overseas prime ministers & presidents put their hand on her arse but she didn't seem to mind Michelle's gesture of affection.

mankymummy · 02/04/2009 11:03

i think they must just have short legs cos if you look at the sitting down photo they dont look that short !

i cant believe she wouldnt have been briefed not to touch the queen so i reckon it was a publicity stunt.

madwomanintheattic · 02/04/2009 11:03

lol gizmo, that was the impression i got too - reflex and then 'oh, er... extricate'

but i was in stitches at the lilliput thing too. who knew, eh? surely they could have got her a box to stand on?! dh said 'she may be small in physical stature...'

Merrylegs · 02/04/2009 11:03

Love that! What a sweet picture of them with their arms round each other!

They all look like they're having a really good time- Barrack looks like he can't believe his luck - OMG I'm meeting the Queen!

Love Michelle- she is gorgeous.

Sorrento · 02/04/2009 11:03

Prince Phillip probably pinched Michelle's arse.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 02/04/2009 11:05

Mankymummy - maybe it was for a bet.

blimey the Obamas are the best looking power couple since the Kennedys - actually probably better.

JulesJules · 02/04/2009 11:08

the Queen went first!

Barack Obama is apparently 6.1, so not really a giant - the Queen is obv v v tiny!

Ponders · 02/04/2009 11:08

If you look at all the other people in the room the queen is not that teeny after all - it's just that the Obamas are supersize Americans!

Curiousmama · 02/04/2009 11:10

I reckon 'shell's a mumsnetter and was put up to it

TheCrackFox · 02/04/2009 11:10

I knew the queen was tiny but I had no idea that Prince Phillip was so titchy.

If you scroll further down you will see a picture of Sarkozy next to the Queen. He only looks a couple of inches taller. I reckon we will be lucky to see a picture of Obama stood next to him.

Tigerschick · 02/04/2009 11:20

Brilliant pics!
I think there are a lot of mis-conceptions about the Queen.
She's been Queen for longer than a lot of World leaders have been alive so she's been there and done it a million times - apparently she's very good at putting people at their ease.

I rofled when I heard that the Obamas gave the Queen an iPod - nothing funny in that until you know that, among other songs from the musicals, they'd recorded 'Don't Cry for me Argentina' ... or is it just me who finds that a bit funny ...

KayHarkerIsPlayingWithMitchell · 02/04/2009 11:27

I heart the Queen.

Tigerschick · 02/04/2009 11:31

Me too Kay

purpleduck · 02/04/2009 11:39

That cracks me up! Christmas is solved. EVERYONE is now getting a signed photo of me,dh and the kids... Is that because they don't have the queen on their money...?

I think the queen looks chuffed in the fourth piccie down... like"this is me'n'my new BFF"

MayorNazeNotWithChoccyEggs · 02/04/2009 11:41

good for Michelle.

i love the Queen i think she is excellent. i would really love to have a cup of tea and a good old chat with her, i suspect she is would be most interesting and amusing company.

i would've given her a squeeze too

Kathyis6incheshigh · 02/04/2009 11:53

Purpleduck - yes, in that 4th pic you can see that HM and MO are actually touching, whereas the men are at the edge of the photo and not physically in contact [overanalyses]
