i think that's about where i am with it, expat. the guy really fucked up, majorly. it wasn't some deus ex machina accident, he didn't bend over to tie his shoelaces and a piano fell out of the sky. he was careless in a place that people should be careful.

that's not to get my knickers wet blaming him, that's just how i'd feel if it was me. there's no way if you were his friend that you could rest your hand on his shoulder and say 'love, it wasn't your fault'.

nkf · 21/02/2009 13:47

Was it a dangerous place? I saw a shot of it in the paper and wasn't how to evaluate its danger.

I dont think this guy was unlucky or unfortunate I think he was negliant and careless which cost his daughter her life. I do blame him for not being careful enough.

But the fact he may have been kissing his mistress is irrelevant to me.

That is my point

SweetCheeksLovesSweetTalk · 21/02/2009 13:56

Because if he had let go to tie his shoelace/pick up her teddy etc the result would have been the same, his daughter would have dies because of his carlessness in a dangerous place.

The reason why he let go is unimportant to me, the fact that he did let go is all that matters IMO

pramspotter · 21/02/2009 14:04

Jesus. What kind of an idiot would take babies in a pushchair to a place like that...and then let go of the pushchair? Duh.

Like Aitch says..this situation is a little different than "oh shit I went to chase after my toddler and the pram moved"

staggerlee · 21/02/2009 14:21

Agree with sweetcheeks. No doubt the guy made a catastrophic mistake-just don't see that it was 'caused' by his infidelity.

SalmonFromTheLiffey · 21/02/2009 15:42

Wow, I'm angrier now after seeing that spot. Very dangerous. i wouldn't bring a buggy down there for ANY reason. Madness.

leoleosuperstar · 21/02/2009 15:54

Oh no - this story has made my knees go weak. That poor little girl..

BTW what is the Princess Di effect?

mshadowsisfab · 21/02/2009 16:05

at least his wife is showing compassion.

pramspotter · 21/02/2009 16:14

The wife is grieving and in shock right now. The angers towards the husband and the mistress will come later.

expatinscotland · 21/02/2009 16:18

So now we're supposed to be showing 'compassion' for total strangers who take their kids somewhere foolish with their married lover and let go the pram to snog her?

And if there's going to be all this 'no one knows his personal circumstances' it goes to follow no one knows what she's thinking, doing or going to do, either.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 21/02/2009 17:12

Msshadow, I can't imagine that the wife is showing compassion. There are 2 other children involved - one of them an older boy of around 10. He has just lost his little sister, his baby brother nearly drowned, and his parents are both deeply traumatised. I can imagine that the wife must be wanting to minimise any damage for his sake, so for the moment ranting and raving about the circumstances of the tragedy is the last thing on her mind. I would guess that she might be just TOLERATING her husband for the moment as him being banished from the family home would only cause more upset for the boy at present.

(I IMAGINE. No-one knows obviously)

violethill · 21/02/2009 17:17

Read the caption under the picture. The shot is obviously some photo library picture which happens to be near Folkestone which is where the tragedy occurred.

Does anyone actually think they were on a cliff edge FFS?

There is a really big clue here.... Daily Mail.

mshadowsisfab · 21/02/2009 17:20

much easier to blame him

This thread appears on the first page of Google. It seems to be attracting worldwide publicity, due to the juicy mistress angle no doubt.

From what I can gather, there are no confirmed details at all about the personal circumstances of this family, beyond that the mother is showing compassion. Maybe we should just follow her lead.

Looks like the sort of place loads of people would walk with kids, if they happened to live nearby.

SweetCheeksLovesSweetTalk · 21/02/2009 18:41

TBH when the news first broke, before any details of a mistress emerged, a policeman was quoted by a newsreader on BBC1 as saying it wasnt a suitable place to push a pushchair

edam · 21/02/2009 19:08

looks like the sort of place where I'd be keeping a very firm grip on the buggy handles.

AitchTwoOh · 21/02/2009 19:15

i was just about to say the exact same thing, edam. god forgive that man, he really fucked up. the poor wife. i think it said in the papers that the location is near the mistress/girlfriend/whatever's home, so there's another reason to torture herself with 'what ifs?'

btw. all the people posting that people shouldn't be posting etc are still, as sgb might put it, getting their knickers dampened by all this. imo.

expatinscotland · 21/02/2009 19:26

And I still don't see where pointing out that, yes, people make mistakes, but some mistakes are worse than others and this was one serious cock up, makes a person equivalent to a man-hating, angry person devoid of 'compassion' (rolls eyes).

If this guy had managed to get hold of the buggy and his wife found out about the nearmiss and posted a thread on here about it all I can only imagine the difference in comments. Bet I could count on one hand the number of people who'd scold her for not welcoming him home with open arms because, poor love.

staggerlee · 21/02/2009 19:38

Crikey expat. Your imagination is running away with you
