Except the matzos you buy here are made in Leeds. But they're Jewish and that's good enough isn't it? Remember to get rid of your smartphones too. Lots of electronics come from Israel.

tiggersreturn · 18/08/2014 06:59

www.israellycool.com/2014/08/17/sainsburys-supermarket-kosher-confusion/ and now sainsburys have got the message and are removing all kosher food
because of free gaza irrelevant that it's made here. What do you call that? Note the double standards regarding halal food mentioned in the article.

LondonGirl33 · 28/08/2014 15:40

If we're talking about boycotting companies due to their political bias or support of a particular cause or country should we also boycott companies that finance Jihad terrorism?

jeanswithatwist · 29/08/2014 14:13

what about the poor palastinians who lost their sodastream jobs recently, cheers oxfam Hmm

TheDeathOfRats · 29/08/2014 14:24

I won't. I'm Jewish and don't support Israeli policies (or Hamas' for that matter) but I think it's wrong. Matzos is not (necessarily) made in Israel anyway, that would be really stupid financially Confused

Not supporting M&S but supporting any other British company is wrong. Because Britain appears to support Israeli policies and therefore any company is as in the wrong as an Israeli company. Incidentally, one of my great grandparents were one of the early M&S customers, when it was just a market stall and then the Penny Bazaar.

Some people I know are very worried about boycotting Israeli goods as they fear it will lead onto the boycotting of Jewish companies...and on and on. And I don't think that's unreasonable, there has been a massive increase in anti Semitic attacks and the security needed is increasing. All over Europe, there are rising tensions, so it would be very, very easy for anti-Semites to lead the boycott onto Jewish companies.

I won't support some companies I've seen online which even sell IDF support bracelets and so on, but I won't boycott.

TheDeathOfRats · 29/08/2014 14:24

*as an Israeli company, or a company, like M&S, which appears to be supporting Israel.

TheDeathOfRats · 29/08/2014 14:33

Oh, and of my few relatives in Israel, all of who came in the 20s or are descended from those who did, they have all protested and marched when possible. My second cousin has a charity encouraging strong relationships between Palestinian and Israeli children who live in Israel, through sport. But the crafts she sells online are Israeli, so must be boycotted, I suppose.

Shakshuka · 03/09/2014 00:48

Israelis are very used to being boycotted. Ever heard of the Arab boycott? There wasnt Pepsi, McDonald's, Toyota and many other multinationals in Israel until the1990s. And yet Israel prospered and grew.

This all started way before there were any settlements so lets not pretend a boycott is about Gaza, its about

Didadida · 03/09/2014 09:44

As I've posted elsewhere, I hope all those boycotting Jewish Israeli shops and products are also burning books by Jewish Israeli authors.

I mean boycotting of Jewish Israeli shops and products doesn't have a dodgy history, does it. You could always label the shops with big signs, too, to make them easier to spot. 'Jude' might be a great sign for these purposes... Hmm

Do the people who support the boycott not realise it allies them with a bunch of right-wing nutters? Is that stupidity or willful blindness??

SamG76 · 03/09/2014 10:38

Well put, Shakshuka - Naturally the Arab boycott was only connected to Israel, though to be on the approved list companies had to show there were no Jews on the board. I think I read that there was an issue with a Lord who'd converted, but was still considered a Jew for the purposes of the boycott. This is what we'd be going back to if many of the posters on this thread had their way.

Didadida · 03/09/2014 18:51

That's what we're going back to already - witness Sainsbury's being forced to remove kosher food (not made in Israel); witness French pro-Palestinian thugs attacking synagogues and looting Jewish-owned (NOT Israeli) shops. Numerous other examples.

Whether those involved in the boycott want to admit or not, that is what they are actually supporting.

Bambambini · 03/09/2014 18:59

No I will not be boycotting Israeli goods. Not sure how much I buy but won't avoid them.

MrsDavidBowie · 03/09/2014 19:03

It is going to have such an impact isn't it.
And think how marvellous everyone will feel being able to tell others that you are boycotting Israel.

thecatfromjapan · 03/09/2014 19:04

I'm boycotting. It's a bit hard, though, because my supermarket appears to have nothing originating from Israel in it.

My suspicion is that this is very, very far from being a minority boycott.

CaptChaos · 03/09/2014 19:41

I thought the Israel boycott was for goods produced on land grabbed from the West Bank, so not Gaza. Hence the soda stream etc boycotts. Has this changed now?

Shakshuka · 04/09/2014 02:18

I'm boycotting. It's a bit hard, though, because my supermarket appears to have nothing originating from Israel in it.

:) this made me laugh a bit

You see, catinjapan, the Israeli economy is a highly developed one. Agriculture and manufacturing account for only a very small proportion of Israeli exports. That's why not buying avocados or oranges from Israel won't damage the Israel economy, other than perhaps a few poor farmers.

If you want to make a difference, then you need to hit the high value exports like hi-tech, computing, bio-tech, pharmaceuticals. Trouble is that you'd have to make an effort and it might involve giving up things that you really like or need like apple products or certain medications.

Bit harder than just checking a label in the supermarket!

CatWitch · 04/09/2014 02:29

Not only will I not boycot anything from Isreal, I donate as much as possible to Israeli causes and will continue to do so.

maami · 04/09/2014 03:43

Great news: The boycott is definately having an impact :-).

The BDS campaign is becoming higly effective and seemingly the only viable way so far to hit israel directly where it hurts.

israel can bribe decieve and manipulate the gov all it likes; but has no influence whatsoever on the massess of public who in the end have more power; sense of justice and insight.

Thr latest round up of the BDS campaign:

  • Oakland activists prevent Israeli ship from docking for 4 days;
  • Elbit arms factories in UK and Australia occupied by protesters
  • EU to ban Israeli dairy and meat imports with any settlement connections
  • European retailers and companies boycott Israel
  • 7-million strong National Union of Students (UK) endorses BDS
  • Fourth Scottish city council endorses the boycott of Israel -

Ireland’s biggest food retailer drops Israeli produce, as European boycotts surge

Major Israeli food exporters are facing an unprecedented wave of cancelations in orders from Europe as a result of Israel’smost recent massacreof Palestinians inGaza.

SuperValu, the biggest food distributor in Ireland, toldthe Irish medialast week that it has withdrawn Israeli products from its shops.

And Israeli media reports suggest that other major European retailers have taken similar decisions without announcing them publicly.

Israeli fruit and vegetable exporters have faced cancelations from Scandinavia, the UK, France, Belgium and Ireland.

Retailers have become fearful of the rapidly growing consumer boycott of Israeli goods, according to an 11 August articlein Hebrew business websiteThe Marker.

A spokesperson for EDOM, a major Israeli fruit grower and exporter that hasextensive operations in illegal Israeli settlementsin the occupied West Bank, toldThe Marker:

Importers from Europe are telling us that they can’t sell Israeli produce … One European buyer has told me that he had been blocked in several chains in Denmark and Sweden, and then in Belgium. Last weekend, he told me that mangoes which had been packaged in the Netherlands, as always, and shipped to Ireland, were returned, claiming that Israeli produce would not be accepted …

I’ve heard of major exporters from whom chains in southern France are no longer buying. There is no official boycott, but everyone is afraid of selling Israeli fruits. We can only hope that things do not get worse.

Among the other exporters interviewed for the article is an Israeli pomegranate grower who is quoted as saying that they had been forced to cancel their “entire work plan in the UK” because major retail chains were no longer interested in Israeli goods, and that similar messages had been received from importers in Belgium and Scandinavia.

Holocaust survivors condemn Israel for ‘Gaza massacre,’ call for boycott
Posted on August 23, 2014 by Haaretz

Hundreds of Holocaust survivors and descendants of survivors have signed a letter, published as an advertisement in Saturday’s New York Times, condemning “the massacre of Palestinians in Gaza” and calling for a complete boycott of Israel.

According to the letter, the condemnation was prompted by an advertisement written by Elie Wiesel and published in major news outlets worldwide, accusing Hamas of “child sacrifice” and comparing the group to the Nazis.

The letter, signed by 327 Jewish Holocaust survivors and descendants of survivors and sponsored by the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network, accuses Wiesel of “abuse of history” in order to justify Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip:

“…we are disgusted and outraged by Elie Wiesel’s abuse of our history in these pages to justify the unjustifiable: Israel’s wholesale effort to destroy Gaza and the murder of more than 2,000 Palestinians, including many hundreds of children. Nothing can justify bombing UN shelters, homes, hospitals and universities. Nothing can justify depriving people of electricity and water.”

The letter also blames the United States of aiding Israel in its Gaza operation, and the West in general of protecting Israel from condemnation.

“Genocide begins with the silence of the world,” the letter reads.

The letter ends with a call to bring the blockade of Gaza to an immediate end, and for a full boycott of Israel. “Never again” must mean NEVER AGAIN FOR ANYONE!,” the letter concludes.

Full text of letter:

“Jewish survivors and descendants of survivors and victims of Nazi genocide unequivocally condemn the massacre of Palestinians in Gaza

“As Jewish survivors and descendants of survivors and victims of the Nazi genocide we unequivocally condemn the massacre of Palestinians in Gaza and the ongoing occupation and colonization of historic Palestine. We further condemn the United States for providing Israel with the funding to carry out the attack, and Western states more generally for using their diplomatic muscle to protect Israel from condemnation. Genocide begins with the silence of the world.

“We are alarmed by the extreme, racist dehumanization of Palestinians in Israeli society, which has reached a fever-pitch. In Israel, politicians and pundits in The Times of Israel and The Jerusalem Post have called openly for genocide of Palestinians and right-wing Israelis are adopting Neo-Nazi insignia.

“Furthermore, we are disgusted and outraged by Elie Wiesel’s abuse of our history in these pages to justify the unjustifiable: Israel’s wholesale effort to destroy Gaza and the murder of more than 2,000 Palestinians, including many hundreds of children. Nothing can justify bombing UN shelters, homes, hospitals and universities. Nothing can justify depriving people of electricity and water.

“We must raise our collective voices and use our collective power to bring about an end to all forms of racism, including the ongoing genocide of Palestinian people. We call for an immediate end to the siege against and blockade of Gaza. We call for the full economic, cultural and academic boycott of Israel. “Never again” must mean NEVER AGAIN FOR ANYONE!”

Don't forget to boycott intel maami. Their prcoessors are in 80% of computers so it may be difficult...but you must stick to your beliefs.

Fruit and veg exports aren't where the big money is...

maami · 04/09/2014 05:02

Yes yes shakshuka.. Please give me a detailed list with complete with evidence if you have one...random grand claims wont be enough.... But will be glad to! My conscience is more important than greed or personal comfort. There are plenty of better alternatives around!

maami · 04/09/2014 05:04

And yes agriculture is big money esp in the illegal settlement that they have stolen from the palestinians. Once a thief... Always a thief!
