Me - Please note there is a difference between Israeli and Jewish.

mysterymoniker · 17/01/2009 21:38

good, because it's starting to look uncomfortably familiar - boycotting Jewish shops

iheartdusty · 17/01/2009 21:43

in answer to Bubble

when Shirley Porter fled from the UK after the voterigging scandal, she took up residence in Israel.

she is now described as a "prominent philanthropist" in Israel.

There is a huge difference between the anti- Semitic boycotting of Jewish shops and the anti Zionist boycott of products that are part of the Israeli export economy and businesses in other countries who contribute to the Zionist cause.

Jewish does NOT mean the same as Israeli or
Zionist.

I certainly will not be boycotting any Israeli products. A ceasefire has been announced this evening, but in any case, the Israeli's are acting in self-defence. There are far greater attrocities committed in the world today - where are your calls for something more meaningful?

And, to follow on from from other posters above, shall we boycott our Jewish friends as well?

roisin · 17/01/2009 21:52

We have been boycotting Israeli products for some time.
Actually, it's dh. I loathe shopping and mostly he does it all. Occasionally I pop in to get a few things and invariably get roundly bollocked when I get back for buying something unethical!

I approve wholeheartedly of responsible shopping, it's just I can't stand the process of shopping at all. I just panic and grab anything. It's always wrong.

why is it unethical to buy something grown by an Israeli?

slayerette · 17/01/2009 22:02

Why are we boycotting Israeli products and not (say) American products?

Aitch · 17/01/2009 22:04

i've boycotted israeli products for decades...

Eniddo · 17/01/2009 22:05

boycotts are stupid

expatinscotland · 17/01/2009 22:06

yuk. i don't buy any of those products.

i grow my own fresh herbs, thanks muchly [preens]

slayerette · 17/01/2009 22:10

Are there (horror of horrors) any innocent citizens in Israel whose livelihood might be affected by such boycotts?

seeker · 17/01/2009 22:10

"boycotts are stupid"

Tell that to Nelson Mandela!

coriander is tough because even if you get one good season, it'll die off. i have to replant from scratch.

i grow inside. everything except the rosemary, because there is a mo' fo' MASSIVE rosemary bush right outside the back door in the garden here.

Yeah I started last week, instead of buying my usual Hass avacados, I got the some from Chili.
I'm not sure if I can boycott my Clinique make-up, I'm too vain.

I was brought up not buying things from Israel as well as South Africa. When I was very small my mum's dp was furious when her dad visited Jerusalem and brought her back some jewellery. She tried to boycott but my grandfather didn't agree with that and she didn't want to reject the present.

I'm not always as consistent as I was when I was young though. And in my local shops (much cheaper and closer to home) it's harder to tell where stuff comes from than in the supermarket.

NeilOliversBurd · 18/01/2009 01:53

Did a big supermarket shop today, I shopped at Tescos despite knowing that they screw all their suppliers into the ground (I know this from first hand experiences - when it comes to getting competitive prices they have NO shame) and yes, the pack of sweet potatoes I bought are from Israel. I wish I had the income to back up my principles.
For instance I hate that I cannot afford organic. I hate that I cannot be choosy on the grounds of airmiles and I really, really hate that I have not found a local supplier for all my veg, dairy etc. on a weekly basis.

I think my new year's resolution should be to try harder on that score. I am such a sloth.

nappyaddict · 18/01/2009 02:10

Why are we boycotting Tesco and M&S?

PetitePeluche · 18/01/2009 02:17

I think NeilOliversBurd has explained why she feels the need to boycott Tescos. I know their purchasers are ruthless in the extreme. I think the supplier should be able to negotiate a reasonable price and I wish I would support that.

nappyaddict · 18/01/2009 02:26

But aren't all supermarkets the same in that respect?

PetitePeluche · 18/01/2009 03:30

Probably, but I cannot comment on the specifics of other supermarkets. I just know from first hand that Tesco buyers are merciless and are over a barrel to be so.

I feel that with that knowledge, I should boycott their stores.

So do I take it from your post that you boycott all supermarkets nappyaddict?
Fair play to you then. The rest of us can only aspire to your level of ethical commitment.
