i suppose we'll agree to disagree unfitmother - imo, at this stage what she is carrying is an embryo, not a child, it has the potentional to become a child but as yet is not a child, so yes, the least selfish thing to do would be to terminate. That is my opinion.

And there is no reason to suspect she would have fertility problems after an early uncomplicated abortion - fertility problems are far more likely after childbirth.

Northernlurker · 12/01/2009 18:44

Absolutely clarissimo - in a perfect world nobody would need to face these decisions.

babybaby- she already has fertility issues. As far as she has been told these children are a miracle. If you got pregnant when you were told it would be nigh on impossible, would you really go through with a termination? Knowing this could be your 1 chance to give birth.

I agrre that would be a valid decision for you BabyBaby, but does not mean that it has to be the same for everyone else.
I am personally and ethically anti-abortion on a personal level but respect everyone else's right to choose.

differentID · 12/01/2009 18:51

"Doctors told me that I may never be able to conceive because of my polycystic ovary syndrome and I had practically given up.

"I thought, it's not going to happen now, so I've just got to accept it.

"They'd advised that I should have a termination mainly because it would save me heartache further down the line, but I've told them there's no way I'm going to have a termination and I want to go ahead with my pregnancy.

"I believe everything happens for a reason and there was a reason why God chose me to be their mum and there's absolutely no way I would consider an abortion.

"I'm very happy and proud of my twins and they deserve every chance in life."

This is from an interview already given. She seems like she has made peace with herself and come to terms with the decision made.

i am so glad I have never had to make a decision like this.

My BIL made a controversial point Im not sure I agree with (he is a doctor). He thinks it is selfish to go ahead with a pregnancy where the medical advice is to terminate. Hundreds of thousands can be spent on these poor children (he was really thinking of babies who will be brain damaged) who have poor quality of life and usually dont survive for long anyway. The money (and NHS has finite resources) could be better spent on other children.

Is a very harsh view dont think I share.

Northernlurker · 12/01/2009 19:09

Kerala - I don't agree with your bil but I can see exactly why his work leads to him to feel that. I have a paediatrician friend who has expressed similar reservations about the decisions some parents make. The problem is that they can only see things in terms of measurable outcome - be it financial or physical. What can't be measured is the effect on our heart and soul - that's the real debit and profit account and that's why these decisions have to remain with the parent.

JollyPirate · 12/01/2009 19:10

If she only conceived in December then it's still very early days and more detailed scans at a later date may give a better prognosis. I think in her shoes I might be inclined to wait and see what later scans show. Poor woman - what a horrible situation to be in.

kerala · 12/01/2009 19:11

Yes thats its NL. My sister immediately said "what if it was our baby" and he went very quiet...

sorry it's a daily mail link - but they don't look too unhappy or in too much pain to me

FAQtothefuture · 12/01/2009 19:18

flipping heck just read that article - I'm impressed - they passed their driving test when they were 16, in their case on head controls one half of their body, the other head the other half - I have enough trouble using my one head to co-oridnate my body!

BabyBaby123 · 12/01/2009 19:20

they have two hearts and share organs from the pelvis down - this 'child' will have one heart only so is effectively one person with two heads. The best outcome for the would probably be that one head is non functional. I'm sure there was a case somewhere before like that - maybe in india?

FAQtothefuture · 12/01/2009 19:22

I can't see anything in that article that says whether they share all their organs or not. Presumably if they were only concieved in December scans will show very little - especially as the organs have hardly started developing at this stage

FAQtothefuture · 12/01/2009 19:23

at most she's going to be what 8 weeks pg (presuming that she concieved on the 1st of December)

differentID · 12/01/2009 19:24

actually the doctors don't know yet what organs they share.
There are two brains, each functioning seperately. Therefore there are 2 babies.

it did say only one heartbeat but with a possibility of another developing by 12 weeks although personally thought the heart was in place by the 6th week?

Its her body, her baby, her decision, and probably one which she hasnt taken lightly, i dont see why she should be called selfish for letting anture takes its course

FAQtothefuture · 12/01/2009 19:25

oh sorry - can't listen to the video with it - my sound isn't working at the moment, only read the article.
