It's a tricky one. I don't think I'd abort either. Docs reckon it won't live long but they've been proven wrong before.

What a hard choice to have to make - both as a personal one and also the kind of life they'll have - all the considerations.

I think i'd let nature take it's course. I've seen footage of the girls in America and they seemed well enough.

BONKERZ · 12/01/2009 18:16

its so hard to be honest to make a decision in that situation. The scans are not conclusive i dont think and therefore hard to know the fate of the babies. Personnally i dont think i could abourt either in that situation. The guilt would be too much, much more than the babies dying after birth. the old saying better to have loved and lost than never loved at all springs to mind.

With the right care there is a chance that the twins will live. However only 4 sets of similar twins have lived to adulthood. I am praying that the parents have the strength they will need with the media circus that is going to be inevitable as her pregnancy progresses. Good fortune and luck to them.

I feel really sorry for her situation and think shes v brave.

BabyBaby123 · 12/01/2009 18:16

i don't know if it's anyone else's place to say really but my personal view is that it is a selfish decision to continue with the pregnancy

and i agree with tmmj - abortion is far prefeable imo to a (probably very short) life full of misery and pain

That's not true tmmj - the teenagers in the US live a very happy life, it seemed from the documentary I saw. They are completely accepted in their communities, have lots of friends, study, have career ambitions, there was even a doctor who said there was no reason why they couldn't have babies themselves. It really left me thinking it takes all sorts and if I'm in my own single and independent body, I'm in no position to judge whether their quality of life is worth having. If they feel it is, it is.

I would do the same if it was me. They are being given a chance at life, and there is no reason to say that their lives will be full of misery or pain.

The American twins may be a rare case, but I think these babies should have a chance.

I would want to have them.

muppetgirl · 12/01/2009 18:24

I haven't had problems having children but I have friends that have. I also know that some couples are so desperate to have a child that their life is seriously effected by it and it becomes all consuming. I don;t know what I would do in this situation I have been lucky 3 times (currently prgt with no 3) and unlucky once but I can totally understand their decision to carry on with this pregnancy. They are the babies they have been dreaming of and to know that they probably won't survive but they can at least give them a chance is a totally understandable reason to carry on. I am not against abortion at all but can see their reasons clearly.

BabyBaby123 · 12/01/2009 18:24

it is selfish. she is putting her own needs before that of the poor child/children that will be born out of this - if they even survive that long. I'm sorry if it sounds unkind, I'm sure it's very difficult for her but as a loving parent if I had that kind of chance to make a decision for my child, to save them extreme pain, discomfort and unhappiness, I would chose to not put them through it at all and deal with my own pain at terminating what is obviously a wanted pregnancy for the woman and her partner.

ilovelovemydog · 12/01/2009 18:26

Wasn't there a set of conjoined twins in Ireland who survived? They were split I believe?

muppetgirl · 12/01/2009 18:26

I agree with whoever said that you don't know they will be in pain, we don't know what these twins will feel at all as they are unique.

BabyBaby123 · 12/01/2009 18:27

these look as though they can't be split though which is the reason for my strength of feeling about this case - it is effectively one baby with two heads. I have heard of it happening where one head is not functioning but I don't know what the possibilities would be in terms of having it removed....
