Paedophile to be deported to UK

A British paedophile who has spent 37 years in an Australian jail is to be deported to the UK, officials said. UK-born Robert Excell, 66, who moved to Australia when he was ten, will be flown home as soon as he has the necessary travel documents, said a spokesman for the Western Australia Justice Department. Excell, who emigrated to Australia as a child but never became a citizen, was serving an indeterminate sentence at the State Governor's pleasure after a string of sex attacks on boys.

What do you think?

So are you saying that in WA where he reoffended they didn't watch him?

Tinker: using irony to make the point i hope???

The police will be watching him as he will be on the register. Until he attempts to commit a crime, of course they can't do anything.

FGS women, do you really want to live in a world where vigilantism rules and people are locked up before they have commited a crime.

Once again, so much total hysteria about paedophilia, far far more so then about domestic violence, violent abuse of children etc.

I have a son. the thought of him being sexually assuaulted makes me feel sick. but i don't want him to grow up in a country where people want to bludgeon people to death, and lock them up and throw away the key, i want him to grow up in a society that respects the laws that are there to protect that society from disintegrating into lawless violence.

he is far more likely to be run over by a car...

why is the fear and loathing so utterly out of proportion, especially in view of the fact that mostly these people are abused, and mentally ill.

makes me so sad to read this thread.

Tinker · 23/03/2005 13:45

Absolutely sophable.

morningpaper · 23/03/2005 13:46

RT absolutely! Paedophiles are no different IMO to any criminal - they are just people's husbands and brothers and fathers - and they might reoffend or they might not. I wouldn't let me daughter have tea with him but I wouldn't let my daughter off with any man I didn't 100% trust.

My daughter 'hangs around' with a lot of mental health service users, because I work with and socialise with them, some of which may pose a risk to her and me - who knows? I'd rather give people a chance of rehabilitation. Besides which, statistics show that our biggest worry should be the men she loves and trusts, but we don't all sit around terrified that our fathers/husbands/brothers might be abusing our children - you couldn't live like that.

My ex brother-in-law served 13 years for murdering his first wife, but I still tossed confetti when he wedded my sister in law the month he got out... (ok I was a bit worried but...)

Re "so much total hysteria about paedophilia" - I agree that it is sensationalised beyond belief by the media, but that's not to say that a man who is a known offender, who has regularly reoffended on every single occasion he was released, is not a danger to society.

RTKangaMummy · 23/03/2005 13:47

How many chances do you think he should have then?

OP posts:
NomDePlume · 23/03/2005 13:48

hear, hear Kanga

morningpaper · 23/03/2005 13:50

He won't have any chances - the rehabiliated (or in the process of) paedophiles I've worked with are literally imprisoned if they talk to children. If he is genuinely a risk he will be banged up as soon as he is through customs.

This kind of press coverage is just perpetrating hysteria, I completely agree with sophable on that.

RTKangaMummy · 23/03/2005 13:53

I know you are talking about hysteria etc

But IMHO he has deffo had as many chances as he deserves

And what did he do with them

every time.........

OP posts:
RTKangaMummy · 23/03/2005 13:54

hey say that he is a ow risk BUT the atoney general of WA

Will not let him free in the community

COs he does not trust him

OP posts:
NomDePlume · 23/03/2005 13:55

I agree with RTKM.

I know what you are saying (I have said it further down) about rehab for paedophiles etc, but going on the information we have on this one case then I wouldn't give this man a single, solitary chance.

morningpaper · 23/03/2005 13:56

But if it's really that clear cut, I'm sure the British Authorities will take the necessary steps to prevent re-offending.

Caligula · 23/03/2005 13:57

I think the difference with this man is that he is a convicted paedophile who has committed crimes, not a potential one who hasn't committed any.

And it's back to the old thing of paedophiles being dealt with by the criminal justice system as if they were committing the same sort of crime for the same sort of motivation as a burglar, when they should be dealt with by the mental health system.

NomDePlume · 23/03/2005 13:59

But is paedophillia an actual mental illness or is it another (albeit highly inappropriate & illegal) sexual preference ?

haggered · 23/03/2005 14:00

Wasnt that monster who killed Sara payne a known Peodo ? and wasnt he under watch ? ( maybe wrong )

bundle · 23/03/2005 14:00

ndp, i think it's an illness because if you "simply" have an alternative sexual preference you could still stop yourself from following your urges iyswim, but people like him don't seem to be able to do that

network · 23/03/2005 14:01

Morning Paper are u mad!!!!
Of course paed crimes are different to any other crime. They are attacking the most vulnerable and the most precious things we have. Added to this the govt will hit harder at crimes against the state than crimes against our children.

NomDePlume · 23/03/2005 14:02

I think there is a bit of both in it TBH.

RTKangaMummy · 23/03/2005 14:02

My understanding is that it is just how they feel

They fancy boys or girls

like me fancying robbie W or Philip Quast

Caligula · 23/03/2005 14:02

Good question NdP. I personally would classify anyone who wants to have sex with an infant as a lunatic, but then, I'm not very liberal on these matters. I also think anyone who wants his penis nailed to a chair for 3 days is pretty wacko too, and probably in need of some serious therapy, but the difference there is I guess, that it's consensual.

I suppose mental illness is very much defined by the society you live in. What's one society's schizophrenia is another one's hotline to God.

haggered · 23/03/2005 14:04

Watched a documentary ages ago on paedophiles and they all seem to reoffend and lie and hide their dirty ways one way or another. These are children dont forget and are not aware of the evil words people use to lure them in. they dont hunt adults who are able to defend there are our babies !

Caligula · 23/03/2005 14:05

But the difference with fancying Robbie is that you don't act on it.

Some people who fancy him send him mad letters and stalk him, and then perhaps try to murder him. Again, they can't control their prediliction for him. I'd say they're probably mentally ill too.

bundle · 23/03/2005 14:05

like rapists

haggered · 23/03/2005 14:07
