Hi, to make it easier for people who are finding this subject very distressing, we're going to keep all Baby P posts in one thread. If you'd like to discuss this subject, then here is the thread to do so. We'll go on the other threads and link to this one. Thanks very much.

Have done Potty. And emailed everyone I know to do the same.

PottyCock · 18/11/2008 08:57

Great, I have done this too. There's not much point in banging on about it unless we are prepared to make a noise in the ears of people who can actually take a good look at child protection policy with the potential to effect change and hopefully improvement in this area.

mamadiva · 18/11/2008 09:07

Have emailed MP's in support of

*Public Enquiry
*Jail terms in these cases
*And that although SS were resposible we need to try and find the specific to blame and get rid of them because if they are in charge this will happen again.

Will also email about John Hemming EDM.

mabanana Good morning to you to my dear

See youv'e pulled your head out yourarse the clouds to acknowledge that there is probably not one PO in the land who doesn't do this I'm afraid, it may not be right but heyho I'm not going to stop these people getting a kicking are you?

Noone is fantasizing or whatever you like to call it about any violence it is a certainty and we will probably hear about it soon enough. Infact if I recall rightly Tracey was in the docks with a huge bruise on her jaw, wonder where that came from?

Yes I have heard of the man you were talking about he was on the news for about 2 months a while ago when the man who did it was found out. I can't do anything about that I'm afraid I feel for the ones who are innocent but the ones who laugh in court when their sons horrific injuries are read out deserve all the get.

Anyway that's not what I'm here to talk about dwell on it if you must but there's nothing we can do about it.

I agree pottycock and I have done so. I just hope lots of people write to their mps and the government gets on with this quickly. I was shocked that 200 children in that borough alone are at risk - dreadful that this type of abuse is probably going on now.

And mamadiva and a couple of others of you who have expressed an interest in social work/fostering. Not sure if you saw my link to Homestart - it probably got lost in the debate but volunteering might be a good way to see if a career in this field is for you and you could be helping vulnerable children too:

Homestart

mamadiva · 18/11/2008 09:09

Could I ask sorry for being a bit thick but what exactly is JH EDM?

I can't write to him if I don't know what I'm writing about

mamadiva · 18/11/2008 09:12

twofalls I saw that link but unfortunately there are none in my area.

I am going to phone Womans Refuge and a Special needs home today so here's hoping they'll take on a volunteer atleast, make some headway into getting into a decent job rather than the one I'm in the now

Early Day Motion
EDM 2499

INDEPENDENT INQUIRY INTO THE INTEGRATED CHILDREN'S SYSTEM
13.11.2008

Hemming, John

That this House calls for an independent inquiry on whether the Integrated Children's System assists or hinders child protection and on what the effects of the other changes introduced since the Laming report have been; and further calls on the Department for Children, Schools and Families to reveal the national list of Serious Case Reviews in an anonymised form for independent audit.

blueshoes · 18/11/2008 09:15

I have done all of this and posted this on another thread, but am repeating it here in case anyone else finds the details useful:

I have emailed Ed Balls, Secretary of State for Children and Beverley Hughes, Children's Minister to support the independent review. Their email details appear to have been taken off the webpage I originally linked to but here they are:

Ed Balls: [email protected]
Beverley Hughes: [email protected]

I have copied my MP on the email and asked him to support John Hemming MP's Early Day Motion in Parliament: find out your MP's contact details - writetothem

I have signed the No.10 Petition (thanks, dearbeatrice): here

Don't let Baby P die in vain.

MarmadukeScarlet · 18/11/2008 09:15

John Hemmings is an MP.

An EDM is an Early Day Motion. An official way of asking for a review or investigation of something.

[http://edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails.aspx?EDMID=36907&SESSION=891 EDM]]

MarmadukeScarlet · 18/11/2008 09:17

My link didn't work, sorry, but Potty has cut and pasted it anyway.

mamadiva · 18/11/2008 09:17

Ah thank you.

so wasn't someone saying the other day that the local councils had been informed not to give him the details of all cases?

Is bloody disgusting if there's nothing to hide then why are they backing away when something so obviously needs to be done?

If it were their child/family/friend they'd be quick enough to doo everything in their power.

GColdtimer · 18/11/2008 09:19

Good for you and good luck with that. I am sure they are crying out for people to help.

And I think you write to your MP asking him to support EDM 2499 which calls for a review of children's services.

At the moment 2 other members have added their signatures in support and you are really lobbying your MP to do the same (I think - I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong)

EDM

PottyCock · 18/11/2008 09:20

Yes, he said councils had been asked not to release this information to him. Be interesting to see how many Labour MP's sign up in light of that information. Our representative is Labour, DP and I have both emailed him.

blueshoes · 18/11/2008 09:21

mamadiva, it was John Hemming MP who said that: "The other part of the EDM deals with the fact a government department (DCSF) have instructed local councils not to give me an (anonymous) list of children that have died and whose death has given rise to a serious case review."

Link to other thread that John Hemming was on: here

PottyCock · 18/11/2008 09:21

You're absolutely right twofalls. People who want something to change as a result of this must lobby their MP's to support a review and audit of current child protection provision and policy. Otherwise nothing will change.

mamadiva · 18/11/2008 09:53

I've emailed both of the above thanks for the addresses blueshoes.

Have also sent petition link into a circulation email around my address book am hoping they will pass it on.

ladyworsley · 18/11/2008 10:16

mamadiva, well done for rising above the earlier totally uncalled for attack on you.
I've e-mailed two MPs and plan to contact more.
I've received the Home Start pack, which looks interesting although not possible for me at the moment.
I also e-mailed Haringey direct on [email protected] to express my views on the various failings and missed opportunities. I also passed on my praise for Sylvia Henry and the police, who actually seemed to have some common sense.
There is so much to be gained for other children from highlighting this one case- I cannot understand how those that choose to stick their heads in the sand feel that they have the higher moral ground.

blueshoes · 18/11/2008 10:16

Thank you mamadiva. We need to keep this high on the political agenda.

mamadiva · 18/11/2008 10:26

Yes Ladyworsley I think we definately bring it to light as much as possible, it's a shame but understandable there are so many people in the public who don't want to read about it but surely ignoring it won't do any good all we can do is read the story and decided what we are going to try and stop it happening again.

I am glad this thread has moved on fro sorrow and petty arguments to more positive things and we are putting it to action!

I know we are only a small group but it only takes a few to get it started!

In saying that it actually makes me feel a bit better too knowing that I'm not just sitting around moaning about it we are actually doing something about it, for Baby P and all the other children who need help.

poshwellies · 18/11/2008 10:36

Freaks? I ain't in the mood for people like you today mabanana.

I don't agree with treating criminals with violence but sometimes, the anger that has been created though innocent chldren being abused, does tend to cause uproar.

And I speak of someone who was put through years of abuse as I child.
I pity the mentally sick people who feel the need to torture and abuse, they make me angry and sick to my stomach but I don't wish to take their lives-but who knows what I would feel if my children were taken from me.

I just know of the pain and devastation it leaves.

Highlander · 18/11/2008 11:09

The UK is a bizarre country when it comes to raising children. There's all these odd 'rules' of parenting, that if you break the SS come banging on your door.

We lived briefly in Canada (until DS1 was 10 months) and the mantra there was 'it takes a community to raise a child'. Everything was more free and easy, people in and out of each other's houses. To a Brit, it felt a bit in your face, but you never felt alone. It's very easy to feel isolated as a parent in the UK.

mabanana · 18/11/2008 11:24

Mamadiva, the idea of someone who thinks it is OK for people like your horrible father to orchestrate physical attacks on people having any contact with vulnerable children makes me shudder.

pgwithnumber3 · 18/11/2008 11:33

Give it a break mabana, the majority of gentle everyday folk like the most of people on Mumsnet would not care less if a Prison Officer turned his back on a sadistic child abuser being given a beating. I wouldn't harm a fly but sorry, I would be glad to see these people be punished severely for what they have done by people who are stronger than them. Even then, they would never have one iota of a sense of the pain they inflicted on a defenseless baby.

blueshoes · 18/11/2008 11:36

I don't think there is any doubt that those 3 people were guilty of the crime against Baby P for which they were convicted.
