The poor 17 month old -died of broken back

I just find these kind of stories of extreme abuse so very upsetting and wish we had better safeguards in place to stop such hideous harm happening or at least continuing (when it's pretty obvious!) to helpless children. Why on earth did the doctor not examine a child because he was already on an at risk register and was 'cranky and miserable' at an appointment and hence he/she failed to notice broken back and ribs? It beggars belief. I'm not a punitive 'hang them flog them' type (in fact I'm strongly against corporal punishment) but in this instance I think the mother should be forcibly sterilised to prevent her ever hurting or 'allowing' such hurt to any other child.

I think it must be because they have other children jj. So protecting their anonymity, rather than that of the criminals.

Upwind · 11/11/2008 20:34

I don't understand why they can't release the names - if they had custody of other children surely these children have now been put up for adoption?

elephantwellyphant · 11/11/2008 20:38

This case was littered with utterances from SS that....the injuries were more due to neglect than abuse

Scary. Don't they class neglect as abuse??

LittleBella · 11/11/2008 20:39

Who knows Upwind. Maybe adopted by family members? There'll be some reason the ID's are being held back and it won't be for the protection of the perpetrators.

georgimama · 11/11/2008 20:40

please have a look at this thread, lighting candles for Baby P

jimmyjammys · 11/11/2008 20:41

That is a good point littlebella i hadn't even considered something so tragic as other children being involved. Upwind - we would like to think that other children have been put up for adoption but do we even really trust the system to get it right?

fifitot · 11/11/2008 20:47

I actually trained as a social worker. In my current job I deliver training on safeguarding children. We always start by outling the horrors of the Victoria Climbie case and what was learned. Unfortunately it seems not very much was learned. However Victoria was 8 and while this doesn't lessen the suffering she endured, the fact this child was a baby and suffered a lack of love, food, attention and being battered regularly for 8 months of his life and that the social workers didn't act to remove him permanently.....beggars belief.

The social workers were clearly incompetent. No way could they have been following the correct procedures.

I am soo upset by this story and believe me I have been involved in some nasty cases in my time. I can't stop thinking about it tbh and imagining what he went through. I need to put it out of my mind. Nothing we can do now but pray he's in a lovely place now and hug our own LOs.

tonton · 11/11/2008 20:47

It's particularly horrible in a werek when they've introdueced new legislation for care of pets - animals for fucks sake! No one needs a licence to have a child worse luck.

(and yes I know a civilised society should look after animals well, but it's more important to look after your vunerable and sick humans first).

Re SW, I have only met 2 who do this sort of work (parents at dc's school) and they are both very dim. Frighteningly so. Sorry if that's offensive and yes it's ony 2 people.

Beauregard · 11/11/2008 20:51

I am so so sickened i feel unwell.
The people who did this should die a death in the same torturous way that this poor little mite had to.Rehabilitation could never remove the evil from these people.
I am lost for words.

RIP the poor baby

how does meting out brutality to perpetrators in anyway resolve this?not the answer.liberal societies deal with dysfunction by attempting to learn and understand

theSuburbanDryad · 11/11/2008 21:01

lisad123 - the report i read said that the police had sought removal but were stonewalled by SS.

Libra1975 · 11/11/2008 21:02

Liberal societies attempt to learn (I am not sure they will ever understand, how can you understand hurting a child) but in the meantime how do you deal with the perpetrators? I think a kneejerk reaction such as sterilisation or death penalty is understandable but that is why we do have a justice system even if the maximum penalty they will get is 14 years.

All I can say is that I am not the most maternal person in the world but if anyone tried to hurt my LO I would kill them to protect him, and that includes anyone like my parents or my DH who I also love.

anyfucker · 11/11/2008 21:03

the daily mail names the lodger

georgimama · 11/11/2008 21:03

Scottishmummy, I don't think education is what was lacking with these pieces of shit. It isn't hard to know that beating a 17 month old baby is wrong.

Attempting to learn and understand was pretty much where SS went wrong in this case....

Beauregard · 11/11/2008 21:06

Scottishmummy how on earth can you say that?
Learn from ?

ScottishMummy · 11/11/2008 21:09

i didnt comment on perpetrators education i did comment on the hang em/sterlise em comments

a measure of liberal society is its ability to deal with dysfunction/crime (inc heinous acts) reflect and learn and make potential change

Beauregard · 11/11/2008 21:09

Sorry but fuck Liberal society

ScottishMummy · 11/11/2008 21:13

post climbie the children's act and various recommendations were proposed in response to catalogue of failure.an attempt to learn and understand systemic failure

this is another systemic failure, same council
clearly more mistake,lesons need learned

HRHSaintMamazon · 11/11/2008 21:13

The case is an extreme and certainly horrific one.

Libra1975 · 11/11/2008 21:14

Scottishmummy that's all well and good about learning from the crime but what would you do with the perpetrators?

ScottishMummy · 11/11/2008 21:15

penal sentence obviously

This is so very, very terrible. I also can't believe We've had people on here with children who have had mongolian blue spots that have been investigated because they thought it was child abuse and also poor Fran Lyon!

HRHSaintMamazon · 11/11/2008 21:19

the article sattes that the case showed numerouse cases of good practice. but it would seem that the social services team were given misleading or incorrect advice from a lawyer and DR.

yes they should have been more vigilant during visit's but i really do believe that lesson's have been learned since the laming report.

It is very telling that this death happened in harringey. It's not due to the failings of the social workers in the department..each individual worker does a fantastic job. but they are so vastly understaffed and over stretched it is little wonder there are failingsd in the system.

ledodgy · 11/11/2008 21:19

Sorry a chunk was missed out there it should read I can't believe the socila workers didn't pik up on this after 60 visits.
