The poor 17 month old -died of broken back

I just find these kind of stories of extreme abuse so very upsetting and wish we had better safeguards in place to stop such hideous harm happening or at least continuing (when it's pretty obvious!) to helpless children. Why on earth did the doctor not examine a child because he was already on an at risk register and was 'cranky and miserable' at an appointment and hence he/she failed to notice broken back and ribs? It beggars belief. I'm not a punitive 'hang them flog them' type (in fact I'm strongly against corporal punishment) but in this instance I think the mother should be forcibly sterilised to prevent her ever hurting or 'allowing' such hurt to any other child.

just because the mother et al are brutalising and cruel doesn't mean the state should be too

sadly, another child has died and sustained appalling horrific painful injuries.liberal justice is not punitive.it is reflective and tries to make some sense of events and learn (again) from catalogue of mistakes

Ivegotaheadache · 11/11/2008 18:21

I just feel sick, I have an 18 month son and the thought of what that poor child went through breaks my heart.

I hope that they get what's coming to them, in this life or next.

Very sad and shocking thing to happen.
I can't believe nothing was done to save this poor little one from his so called mum etc.

edam · 11/11/2008 18:33

I don't understand why it is apparently so difficult to find intelligent, sensible SWs who can tell the difference between a child who has been physically assaulted and is covered in bruises and a perfectly normal woman like Fran Lyon who has never, ever, harmed a child or been suspected of harming a child.

I'm sure there are intelligent, sensible SWs, of course, just that there does seem to be a shortage of them.

Mercy · 11/11/2008 19:08

The paediatrician who allegedly failed to diagnose the broken back shortly before Baby P died was employed by Grt Ormond Street.

I also understand that the local police made 2 formal requests for the child to be taken in to LA care but is seems SS have the last say.

I assume the paeditrician will be part of any enquiry into this appalling situation.

misscathcart · 11/11/2008 19:11

so upsetting and distressing. All I can think is HOW??
I'm lost for words.

girliefriend · 11/11/2008 19:47

I can not believe this case it is so shocking and makes me go cold at the thought of what the poor child must of suffered in his short life, I feel ill and do not understand how people are capable of such brutality and evil. If his mother ever was to have another child you would pray that it would be taken away from her at birth. She should rot in jail for the suffering she cause to her own flesh and blood. May he rest in peace xXx

LittleBella · 11/11/2008 19:51

Dreadful dreadful story.

But all those of you calling for sterilisation et al should remember that there isn't a criminal justice system in the world that is infallible and a few innocent women would also be sterilised along with the guilty - it could be you. Barbaric suggestion, and barbaric societies don't actually behave more kindly to children than civilised ones.

LittleBella · 11/11/2008 19:53

I think a lot of the problem is that child protection and family support are 2 different roles and the transition from one to the other is v. difficult. I'm beginning to think that the 2 roles should be separated so that family support would be more welcomed by those who need it, while certain triggers would hand over to child protection who wouldn't have to steer the balance that SS depts have to atm.

cupsoftea · 11/11/2008 19:54

Why does this keep happening? Why is nothing done? - everybody involved should be put away for life - those who killed the poor child and those who neglected their duty of care. Those who killed the child should be forced to wear a sign saying their crime - lets see how they fare in prison.

Callisto · 11/11/2008 20:01

There does appear to be institutionalised inverse snobbery at work in SS which seems to prevent babies and children being taken from poor, badly educated parents. Bizarre and horrifying.

Forcible sterilisation is already being used in the US on convicted paedophiles. Personally I think education is the best defence against these terrible cases of child abuse - educate and empower these women before they have children.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 11/11/2008 20:02

I think this is a terribly sad case, I cannot believe that so many people saw the child and did not help.

What I do wish is that the radios would not splash some of the details in the bulletins. Having specifically avoided the papers on this, I was really choked up when hearing it on the radio.

lisad123 · 11/11/2008 20:02

poor baby boy. I cant believe a doctor from GOSH, missed it!!
for those that are slating SS, it says they had sought legal advice for removal 2 days before, and told no ss can not remove without legal support.

MogTheForgetfulCat · 11/11/2008 20:02

Have just read this story on the BBC website through streaming tears - poor, poor little boy. I feel furiously angry in my total bafflement as to how people could do such things to a child, and how it can have gone undetected. Appallingly sad.

God, I wish I knew what the answer was. Every time, everyone says "This must never happen again" and yet it does, over and over .

ScottishMummy · 11/11/2008 20:04

well given that other prisoners have access to media i imagine inmates will know their crimes and likely they will be placed in vulnerable prisoner unit for their protection

tiredemma · 11/11/2008 20:05

I cant recall a time ever where I have felt so physically ill after hearing a news report. Im utterly horrified.

What on earth motivates people to do such a fucking evil thing?

I hope these animals suffer unimaginable hell in prison.

CrushWithEyeliner · 11/11/2008 20:14

Yes Callisto - I agree with your first statement. This case was littered with utterances from SS that the Mother was "struggling" that they felt sorry for her and felt her problems were nothing more than "bad parenting skills", that the injuries were more due to neglect than abuse. Give me a fucking break.

I mean does it really take people who have been so-called professionally trained and whose JOB it is to read between the degrees of someone struggling and someone whose child is being systematically, visably and very seriously abused. This child had missing teeth and a broken back.

When DD was born and I had quite severe PND my Grandmother made a comment to me - "Don't say a word to SS. You are just the type of Mother they like to pounce on; educated, articulate and extremely hard on yourself."
I didn't know what on earth she meant. The more cases like this I read I think I agree with her.

jimmyjammys · 11/11/2008 20:21

This is the saddest story I have ever read. Why is it ok to release the name of the Dr that failed to diagnose the broken back but not of the perpetrators? Is it ok to say that this Dr sounds like a stupid bitch - still trying to claim that her diagnosis was correct? The system only cares about protecting the accused and not the victims. I don't think I have ever come this close to wanting to be physically sick.

jimmyjammys · 11/11/2008 20:29

It just shows what is wrong with this country - billions wasted on fighting illegar wars, bailing out greedy bankers, ministers perks, avoidable bureaucracy in order to make public bodies more accountable - more and more red tape so people can cover their backs and all the time the vulnerable, sick and mentally ill are swept under the carpet.

elephantwellyphant · 11/11/2008 20:29

I wouldn't worry about that, cupsoftea, I think the other prisoners will be aware of the crimes. Hopefully the prison officers will turn a blind eye to the punishments doled out by them too.

I can't understand how this happens when a child is on the At Risk register. It breaks my heart thinking of that little innocent baby. Why wasn't anyone looking out for him? Grandparents? Extended family? Friends? Sw?

skydancer1 · 11/11/2008 20:29

Littlebella you're right - enforced sterilisation is barbaric. I suppose I was just very angry when I read the news story and just couldn't bear the thought of this woman being pregnant repeatedly again and letting whatever horrible man she was with break more children's bones in utero - you know the kind of barbaric thing...I suppose on reflection it's kinder if she is allowed to bring loads of kids into the world and they are all taken away from her at birth.
