That is horrible, FAQ. I support Obama and I totally disagree with Palin and everything she stands for, but if you can't win on the basis of your arguments, then you don't deserve to win at all. What price feminism if we seek to undermine our female opponents in the most misogynistic way possible?

Hmm, nice smear tactics. Always go so well and create quality arguments which enrich society .

Fair enough, disagree with the woman, but that's the point in a democracy, you may think her views are vile, but if a majority of people don't, she will win.

How many MNers actually have a vote in this election though? A few but not many, I would imagine.

i dont like her policies, I am so hopeful of barack obama getting into office that i do hope it is true.

as for misogynist shit, i disagree, how can it be right that a 17 year old girl cannot claim a child as her own?

thats if it true and there is nothing conclusive but it all looks fishy to me

but if she's lied about her teenage daughter having had a baby (given her views on such things I wouldn't be surprised if having a grandchild born "out of wedlock" would be pretty high on the list of things she'd like to hide from her equally unhinged supporters) - what else has she lied about?

It's what she isn't lying about, but instead proudly proclaiming, that bothers me.

Why do you think she is lying? It is deranged internet speculation. Think about it for just one second - how many people would need to be involved in that sort of cover up? What are the chances of being able to pull it off?

but dittany given her extremely right wing "Christian" views I'd say hiding a teenage pregnancy of her daughters would be quite high on her political agenda list.

the chances of being able to pull it off were probably quite high until she was selected to run as VP.....she wasn't a particularly well known politician, certainly not one that people would have been watching closely for such things/

Agree with dittany. Her right wing views would have prevented her terminating a down syndrome pregnancy.

Really FAQ, that has to be nonsense, and you know it. What are the chances of ANY woman being able to pull it off? It is logistically impossible unless you are saying that all the nurses and doctors were hikinvolved in the cover up too? If you really think it is possible, would you mind explaining exactly how you think it was done, because I'm intrigued.

but she's known to "support" contraception - it's abortion she's against - so no reason at all why she wouldn't be using it herself.

Oh this story is going to run and run, true or not. History is full of people whose mothers were passed off as their siblings, both famous (Catherine Cookson & Jack Nicholson spring to mind) and anonymous. Let's face it, it doesn't on the face of it seem likely, but it's not beyond the realms of possibility. The long flight after her waters had broken is the oddest part of the whole business to me.

The conspiracy threads are full of post-birth pictures; in all of them the 16 year old is holding the baby...I've only seen one in the media so far with the Sarah Palin & hubby holding him, though I'm sure there are more.

FAQ - my guess is that she was able to hide the pregnancy quite easily behind bulky winter clothes - baby born in April.

FAQ · 01/09/2008 17:18

her waters broke in Texas and she not only took an 8hr flight, but then drove for nearly an hour to deliver a baby, which she knew had DS and was a month premature in a not particularly well facilitated unit next to the village she used to be Mayor off (so I should imagine she still has plenty of political clout).

It was her 5th baby fgs - would you spend 9hrs travelling after your waters had gone for your 5th baby, in the knowledge that the more children you have the more likely you are to have the baby quicker? I know I sure as hell wouldn't - and none of my labours have even been quick!

if I was in political position such as she now finds herself in I would be fully aware that gossip would be circulated about me - true and untrue - it's part of being in that kind of position.

If you stand for public office in America your whole life comes under scrutiny. Their freedom of speech means that you can get away with saying just about anything. It's often suggested that male candidates are the fathers of children outside of their marriages. This is just the easiest similar accusation they could make against a woman with a teenage daughter and a young baby. I feel sorry for the daughter, but the mother knew that she would be subjected to public scrutiny which does extend to her whole family. As soon as it was announced that she was standing, investigators will have been sent out to talk to her daughter's ex-boyfriends and find out how far she'll go on a second date. In American politics families are wheeled out at political rallies and 'family values' are a major voting issue.

I notice that the headline on this story is "Sarah Palin hit by internet rumours over fifth child", while the story itself mentions that briefly in passing but says "The biggest cloud on the horizon is an Alaskan ethics investigation into allegations that, as Governor, she, her husband and her aides, pressured and ultimately fired Walter Monegan, the public safety commissioner, for not sacking her brother-in-law, an Alaskan state trooper involved in an ugly divorce with Mrs Palin?s sister."

Somewhat sensationalist sub-editing, then.
