Tribunal rules in favour of marriage registrar who refused to conduct civil partnerships

here

The registrar claims that she was 'harassed' by being called homophobic. IMO she clearly was homophobic in refusing to carry out the duties of her job by supporting same-sex couples making commitments to each other. I agree with Peter Tatchell's comment: "Lillian Ladele claims she has won a victory for religious liberty. No, she has not. She has won a victory for the right to discriminate."

I think it is wrong that she is allowed to pick and choose, but there is a lot more to the case than the headlines make out.

Jux · 13/07/2008 14:46

I thought god sat in judgement, not women in Islington? All she, as a believer(?), had to do was her job, and then watch god smite them, surely.

Jux · 13/07/2008 14:47

Perhaps she didn't believe he could do it without her?

Dottydot · 13/07/2008 14:52

ooh Kay it's lovely having you around!

edam · 13/07/2008 19:23

Can't be bothered to go through every dot and comma of the transcript but it does look as if Islington handled this very badly indeed.

Blu · 13/07/2008 19:49

Good for KayHarker!

InLoveWithSweeneyTodd · 13/07/2008 21:08

I agree KayH.
I think this is a good example of "render to caesar what is caesar's...".

policywonk · 13/07/2008 21:43

edam, can you provide a precis (with bullet points) of Islington's crapness? Cos I can't be arsed to read the transcript. Ta.

MsDemeanor · 13/07/2008 23:01

God, I'm not remotely religious, but it's a blooming relief to see KayHarker and Gene Robinson being so NICE in a world of very strange bigot. Who was the biker bigot harassing Gene Robinson anyway? 'Repent'

No, policy, if I can't be arsed to read the whole transcript, why would I want to do a summary? But sounds as if the bosses handled it very badly, gossiping about her with other members of staff, handing in documents to the tribunal that the panel found very suspicious (stuff the council claimed had been given to her at the time).

policywonk · 14/07/2008 09:28

That's interesting - thanks. (6/10 for effort)
