As I understand it The friend was with him when he allegedly raped victim 1 - he contacted the police independently - whether or not he’s a friend now or got dumped it would be a lot to purger yourself in public in a high profile case

and what could he have done at the time? he didn’t know until now RB was referring to raping someone I guess

Edited

Not to be that person but...

That's actually a really good example of the "not all men" claim. It is possible to be a decent guy, to notice when your friend is doing/saying something morally wrong and actually try to do something. It's unfortunate that there wasn't much he could do at the time to be true, but at least it shows someone was capable of seeing that it was wrong. Which does rather put certain other people to shame....

I worked around a lot of 'celeb men' in the 90's. Sex was everywhere and expected. I had one drop his trousers to show me his erection, another held me up against a wall and tried to kiss me. The difference is when you said no they stopped. The erection guy, I ran out of the room and went to a HUGE celebrity I was working with and told him. He went crazy and really tore Mr Erection a new one. So even then, although it was different to now, it was the norm you didn't push it as far as Brand is accused of pushing it. Everyone knew sex and touching had to be consensual.

I could probably go after erection guy now. At the time what he did wasn't acceptable but probably not something you'd get cancelled over.

Oh how I would love you to share names!

I wonder if he contained himself on the st Trinians set?

I think most men find rape as abhorrent as women do - or maybe that’s just the men I know

RB is in a different t league

Pornhub stats are for worldwide usage, aren't they? Also not being shared with the public since 2019.

Something similar happened to me at the same age with the local GP, who "showed" me how to examine my breasts when giving me a prescription for contraception. No chaperone. I am still unsure about it, tbh.

Same. Dirty old perv. Knew I'd say nowt as I was 16 and going on the pill without my mum's knowledge.

perjure or purger himself of a RB?

Just seen he has the same defense lawyer as Kevin Spacey. I feel really sorry for these women, this must be horrendous for them.

I met him once in the company of young women and I have never, ever come across someone who had such a powerful aura of predatory evil. And I am absolutely not the type to talk about auras, believe me.

I was really affected by it. He just seemed to have the capacity to enforce his will on others through his words and his body - a bit like when you see an NLP hypnotist show. It was genuinely chilling. I've seen people describe Saville in terms that are similar to explain why they somehow accepted Saville doing things that were clearly abusive to others, especially children, even though they saw him doing so with their own eyes.

In order to stop RB continuing to 'cuddle' the young women long after the photo was taken, I had to basically say 'right now that's enough'. He looked at me with utter, vicious loathing - his pupils were absolutely black - and then pretended to come onto me instead. It was a punishment, the joke being that I was a raddled middle-aged woman whom nobody could desire.

I've never come across anything like it in my life, and I was a young woman in the 80s when men would habitually and openly harass us. It's the only time I've met someone who I'd describe as evil.

One thing that I think is interesting is that he clearly doesn't realise that his current creepy Christian 'I forgive you child' schtick at the trial is surely making everyone's predator radar go insane. It's such a common trope from films etc - the smiling psychopath. Or maybe he does, but enough people are spellbound that it's worth it.

Ugh.

This made my blood run cold, we should always trust our gut instinct. I have had that feeling of revulsion 3 times in my life when around 3 different men. One turned out to be a murderer, the second was a sexual predator who used his gay identity to make women feel he was no threat and then he'd assault them and the third was an utter creep and just foul around women. Of course we can't and don't always spot all the wrong 'un but i do believe that we have instincts which are there to help protect us but we are socialised to be "nice" to men and this mean we may overide the warning signs

Main allegations from the TV documentary (I note from this thread that separate women have come forward for the current case, these original allegations were a catalyst):

2005 16 year old Alice. (RB 30 yrs old)
Forced deep-throating. Removal of condom. Significant when it comes to separate evidence from Nadia.
(their relationship lasted 3 months)

Defence - in a relationship + consensual/legal even if immoral. They'd say she went after him three times. They could claim her evidence has been based on watching his stand-up.
Bad sex/back of neck/breath play defence.
Family member corroborates. Grooming in hindsight.
She contacted his book publishers 2020 for an apology.
Defence might also talk of her going into TV/her Mum driving her across to a "predator" and her hurt at being cheated on/humiliated leading to revenge.

2005/6 24 year old runner Rachel.
Flashed at/sexual harassment on set.
(they had a relationship later)

Defence - why would she enter into a relationship with her harasser? No record of complaint to production company.
Endemol no records.

2007 Jordan Martin.
Forced fingering.
(their relationship lasted 6 months)
She wrote a book about it in 2014.

Defence - tempestuous - she was making £ from it (story in tabloids/publication of novel)

2012 Nadia thirties. Raped without condom.
(they had slept together previously)
Medical report/text messages. Most damning of all the women - even if argued she was saying no to condomless sex, that still equates to rape.

Defence would state she had had sex with him before/wanted evidence to sue him/bag being trapped by a painting flimsy.
Decided against criminal/civil action.
She sent a letter to Brand later.

2013 Colleague Phoebe twenties. Attempted rape.

Defence would jump on their previous liaison and claim she was motivated by jealousy. Also that nothing actually happened and three of the bystanders didn't comment.
(they had had an earlier relationship)
Five people corroborate she told them of incident.

Plus toxic/naked/sexualised behaviour in general/across shows.

If Brand did have evidence to refute the above then he needed to provide it quickly. He didn't and police went on to investigate/support other women coming forward.

Other issues that came out/were revisited at the time -

Katharine Ryan's barbs on set/comediennes knowledge in comedy circles

His comment on Trevor Lock that the latter's rape allegation could have been against "any of us"

the Underbelly comments that Adam Rowe made before deletion

Daniel Sloss's insistence that he was on a predator warning list

the Super injunction and masseuse legal case/other threats of litigation

He never took $$$ from Katy Perry She once joked that she has the goods on him "locked in a vault"!

If any of the women from the documentary were being used in this case, the defence will claim that he had been in sexual relationships with all five women either before, during or after the time of the assault.

Alice was accused of a money-grab.
Rachel had a relationship with him after the flashing incident.
Jordan stands by her book but declined to be interviewed.
Nadia considered suing and sent a letter.
Phoebe wasn't raped.

The defence would argue shakedowns, scorned women, hearsay, the sex was legal and consensual or it didn't happen. Even with the damning texts, it would be argued that he's apologising for not using a condom rather than the act itself. As with stealthing, it still constitutes rape (withdrawal of consent and Nadia was vocal).

Please do not misconstrue me. I believed these women's accounts, but there was a case for reasonable doubt.

However, if after the documentary aired, more women came forward - which is what I have understood from this thread - then he has more to defend and surely, the CPS can find a pattern.

Unless the defence claim a fishing exercice.

Channel 4/Endemol/Radio 2 still have questions to answer about toxic work environments.

I feel sorry for his wife. They have iirc a 9 year old, 7 year old and 3 year old together. He has daughters now.

I read his first book and do think his upbringing with regard to a male role model/father into porn affected him.

Given the hundreds of women RB has slept with, my only surprise is that there are not more victims prepared to go to court.

But given some of the victim-blaming seen and the kind of defence which would be used (see above) along with his defenders e.g. Do the hundreds that have not gone against him negate the ones that do? His PA saying she suspected nothing as his groupies were more than willing.
etc it should not come as a shock that some women might not have wanted to put themselves through that mill.

I applaud the courage of those that have.

Thank you for saying this - to all those who keep trying to get us to abide by legal
principal
innocent until proven guilty - this! As well
as we aren’t judges or the jury, we can have options now!

we are so derided to not listen to our gut when it’s probably right at least 97% of the time!

if it doesn’t feel right it usually isn’t

I couldn’t agree more. But I am a radical feminist (ie the arsey awkward kind, not a ‘not all men are like that’ inclusive one), and I'm constantly astonished that after 50 years of feminism women are still unable to see that they are socialised to accept almost anything from men. I deplore #bekind.

Honestly, I think if I weren’t the kind of arsey feminist I am, with many decades of making men feel uncomfortable when I point out their own complicity in what other men do to women and how they benefit from a consequently subdued and frightened female sex, I would not have had the ability to stand up to him.

I said he looked at me with hatred - I should have said rage, because that’s actually what it was. It lasted seconds but I saw it. Black eyes, narcissistic rage.

I just want to add that it’s not just the men that feel uncomfortable- I do too. It’s excruciating. I’ve worked and lived in various environments where this kind of holding-to-account is far from the norm. But it’s really, really important, so I do it for my daughters’ sake, and everyone else’s daughter’s sake. Not trying to blow my own trumpet, but pointing out that it’s no good just thinking this stuff - you have to act.

Similar to Savile. The “jokes” aren’t actually jokes. They really mean what they say.

Exactly that. He even had a part of his act when he said ‘if I invite you backstage, it’s because im going to have sex with you, be in no doubt’ or something like that.

Is anyone following the case?

its actually a hard read or listen in my case: im following The Times podcast of the trial

those poor women

I’m catching up with it this weekend after being a bit too busy in the week and just relying on the main news reports. Listening to the Trial podcast. Sky news journalists. I now realise that the evidence from the friend in Bournemouth has already been heard, near the beginning. Interesting stuff.

Ive got up to the second complainant; the pulling by the arm and begging her to go into the toilet. A couple of things that strike me is that his defence appears to be very weak to this, at least in the way it’s been reported in this podcast: ‘he was just wanting you to have consensual sex’. It sounded as if that behaviour was basically being admitted. It also highlights the variety of allegations, some extremely serious, some less so and based on very different facts. Hardly smacks of collusion, or of women lying for money does it?

That second allegation is really interesting. Legally speaking, it barely gets over the bar for indecent assault (although definitely assault). But it packs a punch in other ways, as it’s so obvious and chilling what he was trying to do. I suspect the defence are underestimating the power of that allegation.

I worked out when #metoo was gaining prominence, I had been harassed/molested/assaulted 22 times between the ages of 15 and 25.
not all but too bloody many men suck.

StuckAgain · Yesterday 20:55

It is so strange when you look back. I have two daughters and a son and am fiercely protective of them all.
At work I teach about enthusiastic consent and am very firm about boundaries.
But in the 80s, 90s my God, when I think of what I put up with, excused or ostriched. Some of it was typical of the time - drunk bloke grabbing your boob or pinching your arse and some of it was horrifying. Bad date and guy gets his erection out, train conductor in France putting his hand on your knee in an empty carriage, bf doing the pressing of your head down.
And now our poor girls are subjected to the pressures of what were kinks being passed as norm/vanilla, alongside stats like 1 in 5 girls between 11 and 18 have been asked for a nude pic or sexting. I despair.
