OR they're telling the truth!
If they wanted compo, then why wait all these years?

Its just brain dead men who dont seem to realise that if it was all about money, the women could have sued him in civil court instead, where the burden of proof is much lower.

Doesn’t it just tend to show the CPS are treating each case on its merits and applying the Code (whether to prosecute) properly? I’m a little worried you think it’s a sign he’s being ‘singled out’ just because there’s someone else they are not prosecuting. They make decisions not to prosecute people all the time.

What or who are COD? I can’t work that one out despite having quite a lot of experience of the courts.

CPS. P/O and S/D are next to each other on a physical keyboard.

This poster seems to have taken over from the earlier one in making loads of spurious arguments to cast doubt on the victims' cases.

The first witness in court has testified that they "spent hours chatting, then she invited him to her hotel room".
What did she do that for, if it wasn't to be intimate with him?
If you invite a man to your hotel room, after spending hours chatting, flirting and drinking with him, let's be clear; he is going to expect sex.

Let's be clear, whatever he "expects", if she doesn't want to, he can decide to not rape her.

In Ireland Russell Brand would have had anonymity as a defendant in a rape case.
It is so different to England where he is named pre trial and filmed going to and from court.

I do feel that is unfair to name and shame and ruin lives before they have even been found guilty in a court of law.

Not victim blame, obviously, like they manage not to in other crimes.

If your house is robbed, you won't be questioned about how much you've given to charity before with the implication you simply gave your stuff away and now just regret it. You won't be asked how many people you let into your house, and it be suggested you were asking for it and what else did you expect?

I think this is an interesting point.

To what extent should rhe defence be able to go to show reasonable doubt and get their client to be found not guilty?

With such crimes the defence will obviously want to question events around the alleged crime which would include flirtatious behaviour whether consent was given for some activities and not others and whether consent was implied or explicit.

I guess the both counsels will want to examine really quite intimate and potentially humiliating experiences (maybe that is why anonymity is required?). The women could potentially be retriaumatised but you need a trial......very hard on the women I agree.

I am just pointing out RB will have a defence and I think there is an obvious tension there when women do see the defence making it's case. Rape and SA without witnesses is notoriously hard to achieve convictions.

Yes people want RB to be guilty and I think women in general wish to see more successful convictions but I can see how from an evidential perspective how these crimes are very difficult to prove.

I do feel that is unfair to name and shame and ruin lives before they have even been found guilty in a court of law.

It doesn't ruin lives
Mike Tyson still a popular character and he went to prison
McGregor still incredibly popular among Irish and American men, has if anything gained more fame and gets to go to the Whitehouse
Ched Evans got to continue as a footballer
Dutch volleyball player raped a 13 year old and still treated as normal by the Dutch press and sporting bodies

I am sure for ordinary men being accused of rape and going to court would be deeply traumatic especially as everyone in your circle would know. But let's not pretend that rape accusations "ruin lives" even men with actual convictions (civil or criminal) get welcomed back into the fold especially by other men. There is this weird thing where men like to insist of they met a man who hurt women theyd knock their head of but when men actually hurt women they still hero worship them.

The victims will, if their identity is known, have it follow them the rest of their lives. For famous men any convictions are just a footnote on their lives.

Regardless of being famous, there are children and other family members to take onto account.

I thought CPS but was still unsure as the poster had successfully typed CPS in previous posts. Must be right I suppose.

Absolute rubbish. Victims have anonymity unless they choose to waive it. For a man to be falsely accused absolutely destroys his life and that of his family

The police have form for very quickly shutting down investigations of historical assault by famous male celebs (like Chris Evans) so it is interesting the COD are trying to run with this one. This is not to excuse Brands behaviour but I can see why people can say Brand is being singled out for prosecution from probably quite a range of celeb men in the 90s.

I worked around a lot of 'celeb men' in the 90's. Sex was everywhere and expected. I had one drop his trousers to show me his erection, another held me up against a wall and tried to kiss me. The difference is when you said no they stopped. The erection guy, I ran out of the room and went to a HUGE celebrity I was working with and told him. He went crazy and really tore Mr Erection a new one. So even then, although it was different to now, it was the norm you didn't push it as far as Brand is accused of pushing it. Everyone knew sex and touching had to be consensual.

I could probably go after erection guy now. At the time what he did wasn't acceptable but probably not something you'd get cancelled over.

I’m surprised the same laws don’t apply in the UK in relation to rape/sexual assault cases.
Doesn’t “Innocent until proven guilty” apply in the UK ?
AFAIK in the case of murder in the Republic Ireland the defendent is named.

Maybe for ordinary men? For celebrities and rich men it absolutely doesn't, whether the allegations are false or not. I gave multiple examples of celebrities where this is the case. If you have counter examples of a famous man having his life unfairly "absolutely destroyed" it would be interesting to hear of it.

There was Kevin Spacey who I think has become notorious and won't be back on our TV screens any time soon. But he was found guilty. And even there I think the lives of the young men he attacked were far more "ruined" by his abuse than his was and there were more of them. And they didnt deserve it. Because mens lives are also ruined when they are raped. It's interesting how the people "worried about men" are always more worried about the men accused of rape than men who are victims.

thestudio · Yesterday 13:19

I met him once in the company of young women and I have never, ever come across someone who had such a powerful aura of predatory evil. And I am absolutely not the type to talk about auras, believe me.

I was really affected by it. He just seemed to have the capacity to enforce his will on others through his words and his body - a bit like when you see an NLP hypnotist show. It was genuinely chilling. I've seen people describe Saville in terms that are similar to explain why they somehow accepted Saville doing things that were clearly abusive to others, especially children, even though they saw him doing so with their own eyes.

In order to stop RB continuing to 'cuddle' the young women long after the photo was taken, I had to basically say 'right now that's enough'. He looked at me with utter, vicious loathing - his pupils were absolutely black - and then pretended to come onto me instead. It was a punishment, the joke being that I was a raddled middle-aged woman whom nobody could desire.

I've never come across anything like it in my life, and I was a young woman in the 80s when men would habitually and openly harass us. It's the only time I've met someone who I'd describe as evil.

One thing that I think is interesting is that he clearly doesn't realise that his current creepy Christian 'I forgive you child' schtick at the trial is surely making everyone's predator radar go insane. It's such a common trope from films etc - the smiling psychopath. Or maybe he does, but enough people are spellbound that it's worth it.

Ugh.

He’s already testified - didn’t say he got destroyed - his evidence is quite compelling because he was a friend and it’s not just what RB said to him - RB was behaving in a guilty way

"Was" a friend, a friend when they were slumming it in the digs in Bournemouth, but maybe dropped somewhere along the road to Hollywood and got an axe to grind? Or maybe genuinely thinks Brand did wrong, but the stuff I heard discussed in the media recently related to 1999, that is a LONG time to carry this stuff on your conscience? I believe the drive from Bournemouth to London guilty statement from Brand occurred in 2001?

When I saw him on TV I just thought he was a twat, he looked like a cross between a Led Zeppelin roadie and someone from the Oliver Cromwell era, certainly no mesmerising Hitler figure, you need to be funny and/or charismatic to mesmerise people properly, I suspect a lot of the people flocking to him were mesmerised by the fame and not much else. In his defence I saw him present a documentary on heroin abuse that was well done and well presented by him.

I don't think much of the reality of him comes across on TV at all.

The mediaeval jester/Lord of Misrule persona is usually very much to the fore - although he also has a 'faux' evil bounder mode, like a Villain from a black and white film with a dash of Terry Thomas, pencil moustache, 'seduce' you and then sell you into prostitution kind of thing. That part of his schtick is a hiding-in-plain-sight pastiche of his actual presence in real life.

As I understand it The friend was with him when he allegedly raped victim 1 - he contacted the police independently - whether or not he’s a friend now or got dumped it would be a lot to purger yourself in public in a high profile case

and what could he have done at the time? he didn’t know until now RB was referring to raping someone I guess

Yes - they are getting off on everyone laughing at something that’s true - must make them feel powerful
