Canada school shooting by “female”

I was listening to the radio while driving home last night and the BBC news reported that the identity had been confirmed of the person responsible for eight deaths and many injuries in the horrific school shooting in a small town in British Columbia, not far from where I have family living.

The newsreader then cut to an audio clip of a senior representative of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police telling us firmly that the shooter was female, and had been well known to the police for several years for violent conduct. The BBC newsreader passed no comment on these remarks and moved on to the next story.

My immediate reaction was a) no way was this a female and b) why do responsible adults in law enforcement and the media feel it necessary to gaslight us by telling these lies?

And this morning, here we are. Not a female.

Who was Jesse Van Rootselaar? Trans 18-year-old named as Canada shooter

YANBU. If the newsreaders want to be politically correct surely they can just say 'identifies as female' as we all know what that means.

The thread is so original. I don’t think there are any other threads on this 🙄

Violence against women and girls is not original. Misogyny is not original. Plain old sex discrimination is not original and nor is police failure to take concerns raised by women (let’s not forget the first murdered victim in this tragedy was his mother).

When all these things stop happening, maybe we can stop posting about them and you can go back to reading threads about fluffy clouds and rainbows.

I agree op, it has caused me to have zero faith in the press. Even when a woman DOES commit a horrific act of violence these days I assume it's a man until I see confirmation. It is a terrible situation. We know they all lie about this so I assume they lie about everything. All the time.

Returntoborrowdale · 12/02/2026 07:51

Agree, it's a horrendous manipulation of facts. And to understand the reasons why someone commits such a crime, the sex of the perpetrator must be acknowledged.

There have been two threads about this running since yesterday morning. Here's the second:

LittleJustice · 12/02/2026 07:56

Yup. Utterly ridiculous.

The Guardian this morning reported that it was a woman with a history of mental health issues.....

Absolute lies.

Abhannmor · 12/02/2026 07:57

Social services had been to the house on several occasions because of concerns about this boy. His firearms license had expired in 2024. How was it not confiscated.

This is the third or fourth shooting by a person who identified as the opposite sex. One by a biological female iirc. Surely the point is that some people who say they are trans are seriously mentally unwell? Whereas with the majority it is a fad or a phase.

SecretSquirrelLoo · 12/02/2026 08:06

A male teenager with mental health problems and a fantasy of himself as an anime girl.

Why should we go along with the fantasies of a man who kills women and children?

Neverforgetwhothisisfor · 12/02/2026 16:28

I didn’t see the other threads. Didn’t occur to me look in AIBU. To me this seems to be about the media and police’s general failure to be curious as to the links between mental health and transgenderism and risk of offending - particularly offences against women and girls. It’s similar in some ways to their deliberate lack of curiosity (for far too long) into the links between culture/race and the Bradford child rape gangs. If you can’t be honest about who the perpetrators are, how can you come up with strategies to stop them?

This.

Stop shoving male crimes onto females. Facts matter. The killer was male but 'identified as' what he thought was female and committed a very male crime

Yep. Some would wish to sweep connection to being 'trans' under the carpet and just pretend a woman did it. Facts matter.

A male with a series of mental health issues who identified as female. Not a female crime.

I'm surprised at how few women appear to get upset at these stories given that crimes of males are then attributed to women. Irs also increasing and more 'shooters' are trans and male in reality.

Meadowfinch · 19/02/2026 12:48

You're quite right OP. The shooter was a man in a dress. To call him a woman is an insult to all women.

Out of interest, I'd like to know what percentage of school shooters are genuinely female.

Meadowfinch · 19/02/2026 12:50

I've just Googled and if it is to be believed, school shooters in North America are between 96% and 98% male.

So NOT a female phenomenon.

Chersfrozenface · 10/03/2026 13:14

The BBC are at it again.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c309y25prnlo

"An initial ChatGPT account linked to the suspect, 18‑year‑old Jesse Van Rootselaar, was banned by OpenAI in June 2025 due to the nature of her conversations with the chatbot, but Canadian police were not notified."

"The civil lawsuit, brought by Gebala's mother Cia Edmonds, alleges Rootselaar set up an account with ChatGPT before she turned 18 - something users can do with parental consent."

Those aren't direct quotations from court documents (which may well use female pronouns, because batshit Canada), but a description of the situation by the BBC itself.
