Absolutely shocking attack at the Heaton Park Synagogue in Crumpsall North Manchester. My heart goes out to all those hurt and affected by this terrible atrocity.

Unfortunately this type of attack on a synagogue was inevitable and I believe there will be further attacks soon elsewhere.

When the words ‘globalise the intifada’ are shouted at the pro pal marches, this is exactly what is meant. They want to attack and kill Jews (and other religions but Jews first) whether they are zionists or not.

DrBlackbird · 02/10/2025 15:39

So it’s clear they’ve labelled it as terrorist because the attack was to intimidate a certain section of the public (which it now has) but how do they know it was to advance a religious or ideological cause?

The security services seem to have prior intelligence on the attacker. I think they probably know what they are talking about?

But you know what's on page 5 ?

Did you think I was being serious? Do you think they've got a handbook and it says that?

Or do you think it was a joke that went right over your head?

I was listening to LBC earlier and they were saying that security guards are kept at the Jewish school gates in Manchester just so the children can be safe in their schools. They said the attacks have increased exponentially in the past year. Innocent children. Hard to believe this is Britain in 2025.

Yes, someone was saying on another thread how Jewish schools have to have this heavy security.

SerendipityJane · 02/10/2025 15:47

I don’t know any Jewish people who have been to the marches personally, but there are videos on socials of English Jews protesting whats happening Gaza and of the protests wanting a ceasfire is Israel also x

I assume like any groups, Jews aren’t a hive mind. Equally I did have an ex-Muslim try to persuade me that Islam will always be incompatible with the UK and therefore we must refuse all Afghan asylum claims, including those who worked with British troops, which I refuse to believe as I have hope the religion will broadly moderate one day and assimilate in the way Hinduism and Sikhism etc have.

My friend is very very pro-Palestine (its all she ever posts about) and she will repeatedly repost any videos she can find of Jewish people demonstrating against Zionism, in an effort to make it seem this is a widespread stance among Jewish people.

It’s hard to know which proportion of which group agrees with what without detailed surveys around the world, but broadly speaking the Jewish people I know are Zionists who regret any violence that takes place.

Livelovebehappy · 02/10/2025 15:49

My daughter resides in Manchester and has been called to her daughters nursery to collect her 2 year old because one of the staff is Jewish and the nursery doesn't feel safe to be open today. Absolutely appalling what our country is being subjected to because of the intolerence of a group of people who want tolerence for themselves but deny it for others.

PropertyD · 02/10/2025 15:49

I must admit I agree that the Jewish people I know dont tend to shout their religion in your face, they dont go on huge marches. They just live quietly getting on with life. I am thinking of a couple of people I worked with who only mentioned in passing and although it was important to them they didnt try and convert you, call you names and such like.

Oh, I thought you were trying to be clever and accuse me of something that you had no idea about.

My bad, sorry.

Very droll.

Who asked anyone to use critical thinking here ? Isn't there a law against it somewhere ?

Problem is that critical thinking requires in-depth knowledge first. That bit is largely ignored and/or outsourced to gen AI.

* are you questioning whether it is a terrorist attach or not? It's normal for information to be withheld from the public.*

No, I’m not questioning it was a terrorist attack. But in defining it as such, we assume the attackers were Islamist extremists. Though nothing has been specifically reported as such.

ARichtGoodDram · 02/10/2025 15:50

YellowDaze · 02/10/2025 15:35

After today's tragic incident does anyone believe anything will now be done to stem the awful anti semitism which has swept the country since October 7th? Surely, it can't be ignored anymore? Please let these people's lives mean something.

Edited

No, I don't think it will.

People have been fearing this happening for a long time. It's almost been a case of "when?" and "where?" rather than "if" because if the rise in open anti-semitism.

The police's quick response suggests they were very close by, so they were also fearing, perhaps even expecting, something happening today. More forces mobilising sadly likely won't stop this being repeated at some point in the future as solo people using a car and knives are incredibly hard to stop and to predict.

Nothing will change with the hatred because people always prefer to believe that their actions and their words weren't part of it. There will be a lot of "well my peaceful march wasn't full of hate so it's not linked to this..." Folks often cannot see their own actions in the bigger picture of things.

MrsEmmelineLucas · 02/10/2025 15:51

Whether any Jews have been on marches or speak for or against Zionism is completely and utterly irrelevant.
A place of worship was attacked on the most holy day.
That is a hate crime.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/10/2025 15:51

I think a lot of Jewish people have fallen into the trap of needing to be seen to have the right virtuous group think about Palestine

While not presuming to speak for any group, when it comes to a PP's mention of Jewish Voices for Labour I can't help wondering if you've got a point there, @soupyspoon

It's well seen that they're riven with antisemitism - which isn't the same thing as every member or supporter also being an antisemite - and I struggle to imagine why anyone Jewish would want to ally themselves with such an organisation

clipboardz · 02/10/2025 15:51

Do we?

And if we did is that wrong to assume?

They've had security for years - long before 7th October attacks.

I'm an immigrant and not a supporter of Reform.

But to be fucking honest I'm more concerned about the TERRORIST ATTACKS actions than Reform at this particular moment in time.

And I've also got to say, I haven't seen any Jewish people running around the UK murdering anyone. Ever. And it is feeding into Reform even more when people stick their fingers over their eyes and ignore who it is murdering people regularly.

But I'm still hearing some 'both sides' bullshit on social media about thsi brutal attack, and it is sickening. As if Jewish peopel in the UK are just as bad as actual terrorists.

I also can't remember the last time I saw an extremist Hindu or Sikh inspired terrorist attack in the UK.

Maybe we need to accept that not all religions are equally compatible with Western values.

And neither should it be reported until the details are known about this specific individual

But a man who looks as if he is Muslim and from ME ethnicity, attacks a Jewish community on a specifically religious day for that community

Even bare minimum information like that, what does it look like to you?

And it would be fairly remarkable, although not impossible, if the authorities didnt already have him on some sort of watch list. People dont just wake up and decide to do this one day, there is communication and planning and sourcing of material

Obviously there will be questions to ask as to why he wasnt able to stopped but thats for later

Obeseandashamed · 02/10/2025 14:05

This is horrific. My thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones. I suspect this is politically motivated. I wish people would realise that not all Jewish people are zionists. Pray for peace. This barbarism doesn’t belong on our streets.

Isn’t a Zionist merely someone who believes the state of Israel should exist? If so, then a non Zionist is someone who does not believe Israel should exist…That was always my understanding.

I just can’t wrap my mind around the utter senselessness of this attack. This no longer feels like a safe country.

PollyPaintsFlowers · 02/10/2025 15:38

I don't believe anything will change. It made me sick to hear Sadiq Khan's gaslighting in his statement earlier

It has hardened my resolve to support my Jewish friends and my belief in how important the existence, safety and security of Israel is though

what did he say? I’ve only seen his post on X.
The man is useless at best, dangerous at worst. He needs to go.

PollyPaintsFlowers · 02/10/2025 15:56

What has struck me about today's attack was how it's the same methodology that Palestinian terrorists use in Israel. They use cars to mow down people and they commonly use knives aswell

During a spate of knife attacks in Israel about ten years ago a number of videos were put up on YouTube helpfully demonstrating how to stab Jews. They were eventually all removed but it was like whackamole

I agree. Lets of course wait and see but the police seem to be indicating that they know who it is which probably means that they are aware of him.

You’re part of the problem. How dare you!

How dare I what exactly?? To suggest that Israel is committing genocide? Like most of the world! That there is a arrest warrant out for Netanyaho? If anyone is part of the problem it's you. Stocking division rather than unity.
