Absolutely horrific... Frightening when they say they can't get it under control

chocolatespreadsandwich · 09/01/2025 07:32

There was one yesterday,.but only a handful of comments.

It's truly horrifying

DreamingforSoCal · 09/01/2025 07:36

I am gutted for them all. I was due to visit Malibu this year and the road I was going to stay on is burnt to a crisp.

I might need to change my username.

I’ve been evacuated from wildfires before and it’s absolutely terrifying. I still have nightmares about it!

herpastcanchangethefuture · 09/01/2025 07:37

I just started one! It’s so awful, those poor people who have lost their homes, I know the news have been concentrating on the celebrities who have been losing their homes but I keep thinking of all the normal people who have lost everything. Also all the animals who will have been left or trapped. And of course the firefighters. It’s awful

chocolatespreadsandwich · 09/01/2025 07:37

It's the thought of losing your whole home. All the memories, the photos, the irreplaceable reminders of family and friends.

And it's on an absolutely unimaginable scale.

Yes absolutely.

And of course celebrities are just people too, wealth doesn't make it any less devastating to lose your precious photos or the outfit your baby wore when they were born etc

knitnerd90 · 09/01/2025 07:40

It’s horrific. The winds are up to 100mph. And there are new fires tonight.

herpastcanchangethefuture · 09/01/2025 07:43

I keeping seeing that insurance companies wouldn’t renew policies and so many people will be uninsured. I cant imagine how these poor people must be feeling . It must be devastating.

Yes, I was wondering how many would be uninsured. The premiums must be sky high to insure those houses

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 09/01/2025 07:46

It's terrible and that area has suffered from other disasters too. I don't think I could live there.

Sending prayers to them all.

icelolly12 · 09/01/2025 07:48

I started one in climate change yesterday but it didn't get much traction.. just repeating a comment I've made on another thread here- It wouldn't surprise me if insurance companies go bust with the cost of this. The cost of these houses and contents is going to be astronomical. This is a scary issue as we get more disasters insurance won't be viable and we'll be left on our own.

herpastcanchangethefuture · 09/01/2025 07:50

@icelolly12 yes that’s another scary thought.

I think it will be insurance that unravels too

The images are awful, poor people

Mirrorxxx · 09/01/2025 07:52

So worried for all the animals trapped. Devastating.

Usually insurance is required by your mortgage company so many will have been insured, but yes, some will not. Insurers have been pulling out of California. Some may have been able to maintain coverage by doing things like installing sprinklers or clearing trees and shrubbery from around the house.

Yes each of those home owners will be claiming for tens if not hundreds of millions for their homes, contents etc. It will be a big wake up call if the insurers refuse to pay out/can't pay out as I think we assume insurance will cover us, but when it's something widespread it may not be viable.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 09/01/2025 08:00

Houses there are a fortune. Anyone watched selling sunset.

If anything good long term comes out of this I hope the celebrates seeing this with their own eyes will use the experience to put pressure on government around the world for more action on CC.

However it's still a terrible thing to happen so I'm not being glib.

Perhaps it is different over there, but I don't think mortgage company ever checked whether we actually had insurance...

Insurers are insured as well! They are unlikely to go bust from this, but conditions for insuring will certainly be affected.

I think a lot of people find such conclusive evidence of climate change really uncomfortable.
They don't want to change their lifestyles so they want to pretend it isn't happening

Me too - it makes me so sad.

Citygirlrurallife · 09/01/2025 08:31

I came to see if there was one. I lived in LA for a decade and so many of my friends have evacuated, some have lost their homes, my kids’ friends were evacuated from a (state) school that has since burnt to the ground

there are a lot of “normal” people working hard in normal jobs - teachers, admin staff etc etc - who don’t own multi million dollar homes who have lost everything and everyone is terrified.

I feel like a total fraud for feeling so devastated and scared but it’s my second home and there are so many people there I love. Seeing photos of streets I walked down regularly just decimated is awful

chocolatespreadsandwich · 09/01/2025 08:44

It must be utterly terrifying for everyone, rich or not.
And unimaginable that whole neighborhoods are being lost.

It's weird Mumsnet is so silent about this.
I don't have family in LA itself but I do have family in California, and they have lots of friends affected by this

Perfectlystill · 09/01/2025 08:49

I'm trying to work out how far east the fires have got, ie how far into Santa Monica?

I have friends over there who have had to evacuate. They are all in shock.

chocolatespreadsandwich · 09/01/2025 09:02

Its hard to tell, I imagine the situation change so fast

And presumably smoke damage will cause a lot of damage to houses in the area around the fires too?

It must be horrible for people waiting to see if they are next to evacuate etc
