I’m amazed this was allowed to happen. As much as I would like to see him bleed to death, we have to keep prisoners safe, and employ people to do so. On the face of it this could be a massive failing.

Maybe the guards 'didn't notice'
I hope he survives to live the rest of his life in fear. Still won't make up for what he did to that poor child.

But surely someone saw something.
Knew something.
A teacher?
Someone from the community/ church?
Did anyone speak up.
Evil thrives when good people do / say nothing.

I don’t know the specifics regarding this case so could be wrong on this - but it’s my understanding that teachers did speak up and contact social services. Then shortly after the parents removed Sara from school and “homeschooled her”, and there are certainly concerns on why that shouldn’t have been allowed to happen and what went wrong etc.

However, the main point I was making is what’s more disturbing to me is the sad reality that so many need protecting from their own parents. It’s absolutely shocking. But it is the reality.

I have worked in education and within social services as an educator and I’m very well aware abuse is common even if not to this extent.

And my point was also even if social services is better resourced and society as a whole do a better job of noticing and reporting issues, there will always be parents/ family/other adults who slip the net and manage to do things under the radar.

For instance, there was a recent couple who lived off grid and abused their children.

Hope he lives in terrible pain and fear for many many years

Surprised at the few bleeding hearts acting surprised and saying this shouldn’t happen.

one man killing another man, is very different in most people’s eyes to torturing and killing a child. They do not see themselves as similar. And neither do most other people.

this was done by an improvised weapon. And will have been done by someone with nothing to lose, ie lifer.

I don’t blame the staff or take issue with it. It’s well known criminals mete out their own justice to child abusers/killers/rapists.

quite frankly I also hope he survives and spends every day of his life, in the sort of pain and fear he inflicted on that child. And I hope the other two get the same.

thats justice,

I don't think anyone is "acting surprised", bleeding heart or not. We all know this sort of thing happens, which is why men like Sharif should be segregated and clearly should be much better protected. We're dealing with murderers, abusers and rapists, not noble heroes whose sole interest is the protection of children. It's disgraceful that two of them have apparently been given the opportunity to improve their prison status by carrying out such a violent attack.

Shrinkingrose · 03/01/2025 08:52

louddumpernoise · 03/01/2025 08:37

Is it justice?

A few years ago, all ok with you and many others if Andrew Malkinson, a convicted rapist, had been attacked and nearly killed then?

Funny how you re ok with lifers dishing out "justice" yet also say they themselves are at the receiving end of violence too.

If you believe in mob rule then say so, would save a fortune in Police and court processes.

Aside, i believe in the death penalty for people like Sharif but that should follow due process/appeals and independent review, not some violent lunatic dishing out your versions of justice.

Huh? I thought I was clear. But for those in the cheap seats. Let me be even clearer.

i am 100 percent ok, with prisoners doing what they did to people who rape, abuse, torture and murder children.

im not sure how I could be clearer. Please just say if you still struggle to understand what is written. Or ask some adult in the vicinity

penelopelondon · 03/01/2025 08:55

@NotOneOfTheInCrowd but if you look back over the years there are people who have been convicted of the most awful crimes, and you don’t hear of those being murdered.

Through out my life I've dealt with a few men who had been in prison and they told me there's a special place in hell for inmates who abuse children. Please google "child abusers killed in prison" and you'll be shocked by how many of them.

I don't need to ask an adult in the vicinity.

Convicts are locked up because they are persistent, often violent offenders, I very much doubt someone in for say fraud took it upon themselves to attempt to kill someone. It'll be the violent ex gang members who think they are allowed to do as they please. They shouldn't be.

Again, for those in the cheap seats as you would say, I have no sympathy for this man but other offenders should not be applauded for thinking that they are any better.

Ok you obviously missed the point- Andrew Maulkinson was/ is innocent- huge miscarriage of justice. He never raped anyone and his conviction was overturned. Not saying that Urfan Sharif is but this is why prisoners should have their basic human rights (I.e. safety)protected in a civilised society. Or we should bring back the death penalty and kill them humanely, not with a tin can lid or some other horrific method.

Startingagainandagain · 03/01/2025 09:01

Good...

I am not surprised either.

I already thought it was a given that prisoners who have committed crimes against children are targeted by the other inmates.

Nothing to do with the prison officers being accomplice either, unless the prisoner is in complete isolation, he is always going to come in contact with other inmates and there is always the possibility of violence in that environment.

Heronwatcher · 03/01/2025 09:06

As an aside are we all fine with this?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cambridgeshire-37713891.amp

The man in this case, Terrence Ojuederie, beaten to death by a cell mate with a TV, was in jail for burglary and drugs offences. Also smoked spice. But he was a wrong un obviously so got what he deserved.

Jordan Palmer

Peterborough prisoner sentenced for killing cellmate with TV - BBC News

A prisoner is sentenced to 14 years for battering his cellmate to death with a flat screen television in an "unprovoked and ferocious" attack.

StScholastica · 03/01/2025 09:08

I hope the other prisoners are already lifers? Otherwise the increase in their sentences will mean they will be paying a heavy price for what they have done. Poor prison officers too, having to go through an enquiry, all because of this sadistic, evil bastard.

Moonshinebaby · 03/01/2025 09:08

The news was very satisfying to read and it made me smile. I couldn't think of any person more deserving than him with such a shitty start to the new year.

But surely this has to be a massive failure by the prison?

roses2 · 03/01/2025 09:09

He deserved it. But how do other prisoners know what he did? Surely they are not allowed to watch the news and know who is coming into their jail and what they did?

CIaudiasFringe · 03/01/2025 09:09

RosesAndHellebores · 02/01/2025 22:39

Was he not in isolation?

Why would he be in isolation? He's just one of many (sex) offenders on the Special wing. It's a whole wing of wronguns. Still, nice to know there's a pecking order among the worst of the worst

He’s lucky really, he should have been hung in Pakistan. Hopefully his prison torture is long and frequent and ends in death.

Some would that would me merciful

Wrong, they watch TV and often have access to phones. There are no hiding places in prison.

if someone is innocent, on a rare occasion then the issue is with the justice system in the first place. This does not mean in any way I do not believe th3 guilty shouldn’t live their lives in pain and fear like they doled out to a child.

and as said, the other two culprits, his girlfriend and brother, should get the same.

what they did to that little girl. Is beyond heinous. The pain and suffering she had in her own home. Till they eventually killed her. They all deserve as much pain and suffering for the rest of their miserable lives as possible.

RE: prison officers not protecting him. Of course they’re not protecting him. If the area is covered by a camera, absolutely he’ll be managed like any high risk prisoner. But in the areas without cameras like his cell and the showers, he’s on his own.

Officers bring in half the drugs used in prisons. Same with phones and weapons. No way is someone like Sharif being genuinely protected by these guys. They’ll be giving him a slap away from the cameras too.

He is in Belmarsh, a top security prison where Officers are searched every day. He will be managed on the wing, as you can't watch every Prisoner the whole time. If you don't wish to be scared in Prison, don't commit a crime.

WaveNeverBreaking · 03/01/2025 09:17

I can only be cheered by this news. I am not as morally upright as many on here - I am a firm believer in prison justice. I was delighted to hear the news when one of my abusers was killed. More so when I knew it was slow.

I grew up in the criminal world (though have never been part of it as an adult); I've known quite a few people who've done short and medium terms. I have been waiting for this to happen since the sentencing - I imagine the screws 'accidentally' left newspapers around highlighting his crimes when he got sent down. It's usually the way. Someone will be given an extra 3 - 5 years on a very long sentence and won't give a shit. Sharif will be put on numbers and protected better. Everyone other than him will be happy - and I hope he is terrified by that. I hope it happens time and time again.

Incidentally, on numbers (the 'protection' wing) the prisoners still serve each other's food. It was always standard for child abusers to have shit mixed in the food. Every single meal. I hope it's still the case.

DarkAndTwisties · 03/01/2025 09:17

He tortured a child to death. He’s surrounded by men who are capable of violence. What do you think is going to happen?

Yes, I'm sure the men around him are morally outraged and have done this in the name of justice because they're such good guys.

He's surrounded by men like him.

I've no sympathy for him. But I think prisons should be safe, and I don't think people who attempt to murder other prisoners are any kind of heroes.

Again, if you think someone who murders another adult male. Is like someone who tortures and murders a child then you’re in the minority, most of us can see the nuance there.

Their visitors may tell them. There’s always ways and mean of these things getting out. The Guards themselves may let it slip “accidentally to the other inmates.
Didnt that happen with Pearl Fernandez. She was in bed and a Prison Guard went into her cell and said to her obviously I’m paraphrasing here “You sleep for someone who’s killed their baby” which lead to her attack also with Tuna can lids ironically enough
These things always come out.

Ok but how are the tin-can-lid wielding prisoners meant to distinguish between those who are genuinely guilty and those who have been wrongfully convicted. At least Andrew Malkinson thankfully was not murdered in prison before he had his conviction overturned- bad enough as it was for him. By your logic you’d have been happy to see him dead without a chance to clear his name. Whether you like it or not allowing other prisoners to murder/ attempt to murder isn’t justice. In the UK being in prison itself is the punishment. If you don’t like this you should be petitioning your MP or moving to Boliva or somewhere like that.

Heronwatcher · 03/01/2025 09:23

Plus the people who did this probably do not give a shit about Sara, they just want to be top dog in belmarsh for a few weeks so that they can get more drugs/ money/ phones from other prisoners.
